In The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, my favorite story was the story within Chapter 5 (The Elevator in the Ranch House). In this story, when Pausch was an adolescent, he asked his parents if he could paint his bedroom walls, and they agreed to let him do so. Even though his mother was reluctant into agreeing, she decided to because Pausch’s father loved the creative idea. Pausch decided to decorate his walls with items that matter to him. For two days, with the help of Pausch’s sister (Tammy) and his friend (Jack Sheriff, they painted most of the room. For example, he painted it with the quadratic formula and a large, silver elevator door. They painted a panel with floor numbers one through six, and the number “three” was illuminated. In addition, they drew a simple rocket ship, chess pieces, a submarine, and Pandora’s box (Greek mythology). Since it was the late 1970s, Pausch also wrote the words “Disco sucks,” but his mother painted over the word “sucks” because she thought it was vulgar language. Friends and family who came by the room were often impressed by the creative paintings. As the years passed, his mother never painted over the room, and it was always a treat when Pausch would come to visit his childhood. The author focuses on describing an event or a character in detail. This quote is an excellent example of the author’s descriptive writing style. The author uses figurative language and sensory details to create detail which allows the reader to envision the setting in their mind. Without a certain kind a writing style, writing often becomes repetitive and somewhat boring. Writing style is how the writer chooses to express himself or herself through writing. Different styles separates good authors from great authors in many different books. Pausch uses his own writing style throughout the first half of the
