...sturdy wooden door, gleaming in the dim light coming from the windows, shifts its neck downward in an eerie, indicative manner. As the door silently cracks, a glimpse of a slender, scaled monster appears, hissing as it butts its head against the door. With one massive push, the door bursts open and the Velociraptor enters the kitchen where Lex and Tim Murphy are hiding. The kids sit in silence as another Velociraptor enters the room; the raptors roar at each other as if they were communicating. Lex and Tim scamper behind an adjacent counter as the Velociraptors begin to sweep the room, their enlarged claws clicking on the tiles of the floor. Visibly frightened, Lex and Tim tremble as one of the beasts peers its head over the island they cowered behind. Luckily for them, it senses nothing and clicks onward. Then, as if by accident, the raptors massive, muscular tail sweeps across the countertop and sends pots and pans crashing on top of the kids. Lex shrieks as they both dart behind yet another row of counters, but it seems that the raptors take no notice over the crashes and clangs of the pans. It seems they have evaded their predators until Tim flattens himself to the side of cupboard accidentally knocking over a ladle, which seems to stop time on its way to the hard, thunderous ground. The latest trends in military aircraft manufacturing are towards development and incorporation of technology which can provide with means to avoid detection. This enhances its survivability by reducing its radar signature and hence reducing the possibility of being detected by enemy radars. The degree to which this is achieved differs from aircraft to aircraft. Certain aircraft like the B-2 and F-117 have been manufactured with this technology as the basis and are thus referred to as Stealth Aircraft. In other aircraft, stealth is achieved to a lesser degree but it nevertheless helps them in enhancing their survivability against enemy air defence. The day is not far when this technology is likely to find wide spread use in the field of aviation. 2. The dictionary defines stealth as "evasion of notice". Applied to Aerial Warfare, it implies the ability of an aircraft, or platform, to carry out its mission without being detected. Other terms such as "LO" - low observables, or "RO"- reduced observables, have also been used which imply the same thing. In its early days Enron did the right things for the right reason and garnered substantial credibility. Later successful operations were replaced with the illusion of successful operations. In the last phases Enron milked its credibility to sustain operations through loans. When its credibility with lenders crumbled the loan funds dried up and the corporation imploded. It is reminiscent of the old cartoon of the wily coyote who runs off a cliff. For a period of time after the coyote leaves solid ground he is suspended and tries by furious windmilling to stay suspended but eventually plummets to the ground. In Enron's case the magical period of suspension after it had left the solid ground of economically profitable operation lasted for years. The History of the Natural Gas Industry Natural gas, primarily methane, was originally an unwanted byproduct of petroleum extraction. For many years when an oil well vented gas it was simply flared; i.e., burned off. But people eventually learned the uses and virtues of natural gas and built pipelines to convey it to the cities where it took the place of coal gas for residential and industrial lighting and heating. The Real Problem - The Real Focus Abstract In December of 2001, Enron Corporation filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code; one of the largest corporate bankruptcy filings at that time. When the investigations commenced and the tangled Enron web was unraveled, it was discovered that Enron had perpetrated a very sophisticated form of accounting fraud through its repeated use of what are referred to as Special Purpose Entities (“SPEs”). In their most basic forms, SPEs are business entities formed for the purpose of conducting a well specified activity such as construction of a gas pipeline, or collection of a specific group of accounts receivable. However, because of their complex nature, SPEs can be used to manipulate a corporation’s financial results, which was the primary use for which Enron employed the SPE structure.
