THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Rationale:
The Fourth year (4th) Nursing students of University of Pangasinan – Phinma Education Network (UPANG-PEN) School Year (S.Y.) 2012-2013 is the first batch under the new curriculum for Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In the new curriculum, many changes were made like additional subjects, new grading system and new assigned subjects were implemented and scheduled. It is not surprising that a lot of 4th year nursing students are complaining of stress because of the changes brought about by the new curriculum and along with this is the almost weekly examinations on each of the ten (10) major subjects undertaken by these 4th year students. This also includes the Mock Board Examination before they finally graduate which also contributes to the burden felt by the students not only in academic aspect but as well as their individual problems with regards to personal issues, such as love, peers, finances, other family issues and similar factors that make them very stressful.
A normal person when it comes to having stress brought about by daily life’s issues will think of a solution or technique in order to cope up with it. The student researchers believe that these 4th year nursing students of UPANG-PEN S.Y. 2012-2013, make use of the different types of coping mechanisms or techniques according to their own preferences that will help them in facing their stressful times. In connection to this, the student researchers want to conduct a study regarding the most effective way of nursing students 3 in coping with stress, specifically the regular 4th year nursing students of UPANG-PEN S.Y. 2012-201. The study will focus on the most effective way of coping with regards to academic stress.
