Micro-Essay Assignment Seminar 2
Specific Requirements: 1. Write an essay that provides a persuasive interpretation (or reading) of one of the below listed stories found in Literature. The essay must be 1 ½ -3 pages long, double-spaced, written in 12-point font with one-inch margins, and formatted in accordance with Baker College’s APA the easy way!

2. Use one form of Political Criticism in Chapter 7 (see pp. 129-132 in Literature) to analyze the story you chose. Generally, your analysis will explain how the story represents the ways “people negotiate meanings and value, organize themselves into groups, pursuing power and control” (129). Don’t spend an inordinate amount of time and space summarizing the theory; rather your essay should highlight such contested “negotiations” of value and power for instance. Your analysis of the story should consider “oppression and bias, showing us how all sorts of exclusions, suppressions, and exploitations are invented, reinvented, and perpetuated” (123). Your analysis, then, elaborates or unpacks the narrative’s multiple meanings while the analysis answers fundamental questions such as: Who or what is being excluded or exploited? Why might it matter? How does the story demonstrate these exclusion or exploitations?

3. Choose one story to analyze for this Close Reading Assignment:
Langston Hughes, “Thank you, M’am,” pp. 158-160
Tobias Wolf, “Say Yes,”
John Updike, “A & P,” pp. 164-168
Nathaniel Hawthorne, “The Birthmark,” pp. 169-180
Claudia Smith Brinson, “Einstein’s Daughter,” pp. 400-408
John Steinbeck, “The Chrysanthemums,” pp. 541-548

Look Me in the Eye

...Robison recounts upon his inability to communicate socially and his desire for fluid interpersonal skills. He notices that people who are extroverts and are socially capable often “go far in life because interpersonal skill is one of the most important predictors of success” (207). As he grows and becomes more socially capable, he is able to recognize his interpersonal shortcomings and work to change his awkward habits. Because of this, he inherently has more social problems when he is a young boy. “Starting at about six years of age, [he] learned not to submit [him]self to repeated humiliation from people and institutions” (239). Unfortunately, humiliation was the impetus for Robison’s education in interpersonal self-regulation. In chapter 3, Empathy, Robison’s mother has one of her friends over. She comments on a tragedy of someone’s son being killed by a train while playing on train tracks. For lack of an understanding of social and emotional norms, Robison decides to smile at this remark. “She turned to me with a shocked expression on her face. ‘What! Do you think that’s funny?’ I felt embarrassed and a little humiliated. ‘No, I guess not” (29). His response, “No, I guess not”, is key because this is how he learned, through embarrassment and humiliation, that it is not acceptable to find humor in one’s tragic death. For Robison, learning interpersonal self-regulation skills is a bumpy road of learning from his mistakes and differences. 2.) Identify one example of the use...
