Ways to Help Your Child Do Well in School * Read, Read, and Read! Take at least thirty minutes a day and read to your child every day. * Create an atmosphere conducive for reading. Give them support by helping them with their homework. * Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and a balance meal each day. Schedule regular check-ups. * Be a role model. Paired Reading- Choose a book and sit down with them and read aloud pointing at each word as you go along. Allow your child to read it back to you, tracing the words with their finger. Then if they make a mistake move their finger back and help them to correct it. If they are really struggling try Echoing. You read a line and then they read it back to you. Keep reading it over and over until they can get through the material quickly and accurately.
The Mailbox-Attach a small toy-size mailbox with a flag, on the wall with wide sticky Velcro. (A sturdy cardboard box with an opening flap and a cardboard flag will work too). Choose a certain day as “mail day”. If your child notices the flag is up, it means that the box can be checked for mail. The “mail” could include: • A story containing lots of their target sound, to read aloud. • A message, instructing them to “ask questions” about the story to another. The other child will need to answer in complete sentences. • A list of “answers” that are read one at a time to another child. That child must invent a question that will fit the question. Ex: because I felt sick – Why did you stay home from school today? • A message to look for hidden pictures in the room that contain their target sound or language concepts. • A letter written by me, filled with their target sound for reading aloud. This activity is always exciting for the children and ads a lot of fun to our day. (Communication Connects)

Vocabulary
1. Activity website- (http://www.vocabulary.co.il/) This site is a vocabulary site for children of all ages. It has multiple vocabulary learning games that are interactive, while also having games that you and your child can do together. Under this website you can also click on vocabulary articles and it gives you multiple articles from tips on how to learn vocabulary to tips on how to expand vocabulary. This site has a wealth of knowledge. You can use this site on your at home, school, or local library computer.
2. Word Wall- This is where you can make space on the wall somewhere in your house on construction paper and put the letter “A” and add a word under it that starts with that letter and so on for the entire alphabet. New words can be added each week to go over with your child and even make up chants for the words to make it exciting for your child while learning.
3. Illustrate the words -Show pictures or video clips that demonstrate the meaning of a word. Have students draw and label something illustrating the meaning of the word. All you need is blank paper of any kind and pencils, pens, or crayons.
