This semester my reading journals certainly kept track of the progress I made in the class over the course of the spring semester. The reading journals helped me focus on specific aspects of the text with the various prompts provided. This semester I used my reading journals to reflect on the readings and draw inference from them. I liked to use the reading journals to process my thoughts about the reading due for that day and come to conclusions about the themes. Also, it was a great way to get my thoughts down onto paper so when the class started our discussions I had something to reference to. By doing this I could focus more on the actual discussion rather than trying to think of something to say. All in all, the reading journals helped …show more content…
By doing this I could better understand possible overlap of themes in each text. For example, in reading journal 5, I compared Hamilton: An American Musical and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. In this journal I quoted Hamilton saying, “Then a Hurricane came, and devastation reigned.” Then I compared how a hurricane in The Brief Life of Oscar Wao could be when Beli meets The Gangster and the consequences because of this. In addition to comparing lyrics and text, I also used the reading journals to compare similar characters. For instance, in reading journal 7, I compared the backstories of Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan. In this comparison I said, “They both have a huge moment in their life that impacted them negatively.” By comparing these two characters’ backstories I think it makes it easier to relate to characters in the book who seem completely insular. Furthermore, in reading journal 9, I discussed if I thought Beloved should be considered a ghost story. In this entry I said, “I don’t think Beloved is a ghost story in general, but I think Sethe’s life is kind of like a ghost story.” When I wrote this I was comparing how Sethe’s past always comes back to haunt her, like when Beloved actually shows up at the house one day. Completing this reading journal helped me think about what it really meant for Beloved to come back to her family. I think in the end it was a good thing
