Should College Athletes Get Paid Essay

...Should College Athletes Get Paid? College athletes should be paid for playing at the college level. This topic is interesting to me because it has been a debatable topic for a long time. College athletes deserve to get a pay check because they are still responsible to keep their grades up while playing and training for football. They work harder than the pros because they have more of a motivation to get to the higher profession than someone who is already there. They can use that money to help support their families. The coaches are getting paid but they don’t play a sport or endure in a sport. The NCAA is making a profit out of them. In all honesty, the college athletes are one of the most hardest working athletes that don’t get paid. College...

...OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! *Strengths of the essay: Thanh , thank you for submitting your assignment for review. I am Ann B., your writing tutor. First, I want to point out a strength I noted when I read your paper. This sentence in the introduction presents a question and then answers it: College athletes are supposed to be the best of the best on that level, so why do college athletes not get paid? The question sets up the argument nicely for the reader! Now let’s move on to some areas that need revision. Content Development: A direct quotation like this one is not a good topic or first sentence: McCourt states “The athletes are ones who put in hours of practice and training” ( Evan Rosenfeld and Scarlett McCourt). Your audience may not understand why this quoted passage is important. The topic sentence should present a main point about athletes being paid in your own words. The first point is the hectic schedule. Can you write a topic sentence that introduces this point? I note that the second body paragraph does have a topic sentence introducing a point from the thesis in your own words: Another reason to why college athletes should get paid is they need money for expenses. Can you write a similar topic sentence for the first body paragraph as well, Thanh? Then the reader can see the first main point as easily as the second! For more tips, see Developing Powerful Paragraphs. *Thanh 5901461 has requested that you respond to the Organization:...

Essay On Should College Athletes Get Paid

...Should College Athletes Get Paid Ever wonder if college athletes should be paid? A debate that comes up every year is that if college athletes should be paid or should not be paid. College athletes should not be paid for these three reasons: college tuition should be enough money, the NCAA is a non-profit organization, and the college athletic departments will not be able to afford to pay the players. z College athletes get a scholarship and free tuition which costs enough so they do not need to get paid. College tuition is a lot of money and most out-of-state public schools cost around $23,000. If the athlete would go to a private out-of-state school it normally cost around $32,000. That is a ton of money to have just handed to you so you can play sports. “Essentially they receive a...

Should College Athletes Be Paid Essay

...What is a college education worth? Is it worth more than books, tuition, room, and board? Some people think that college athletes should get more than this. College athletes shouldn't be paid for playing college sports because some already get a full- ride scholarship to the college. Many people think they should be paid above and beyond their scholarship to play their sport, but the athletes are already receiving the benefit of a free education. Why is it that some people feel college athletes should get paid above and beyond their scholarship money? Some say the extra money will be used to pay for meals they eat off-campus, clothes, or a trip over spring break. The college athletes believe other kids get money from their parents on top of their scholarships, so why shouldn’t they? They can get jobs because they do not have practice to attend, so they can make money on the side. Some people feel like it would teach the kids financial responsibilities before they can receive the big contract in the NBA, NFL, or MLB. That is something every kid needs to know but what about the kids that do not get forwarded scholarships how do they learn. They...

...College Basketball Players Deserve To Be Paid Imagine playing the sport you love just like a professional, putting all of your focus and dedication towards it, only difference is you aren't getting paid. College basketball players do this everyday, these players go to school, go to practice and repeat with no pay. These athletes deserve to be paid because they produce millions for the N.C.A.A, however do not receive a penny back, full ride scholarships do not cover all necessities during college, and there would be decrease in athlete drop outs. One of the central ideas is that these athletes are producing millions for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and are not receiving a penny back. In the article, “ College athletes deserve to be paid “ the author expresses, “ We’re talking $11 billion for three weekends of television per year” (Wilbon). This quote shows that during March Madness, one of the biggest events in college basketball produces billions of dollars for the N.C.A.A. Paying College Athletes

...Dominick Cima English 102 Sec. 401 31 January 2015 Argument Essay Paid to Play? Picture Morgantown on a warm Saturday in August. The streets are buzzing with students and families, and nothing but blue and gold tailgates for as far as the eye can see. This is also the case for every other college in the country. College football has become increasingly more popular over the past few years. It has even got to the point that players and coaches have raised the idea that players should be paid. This essay will focus mainly on collegiate football players and whether or not they should be payed. I used to play football in college and I, for one, do not think players should be paid. I believe that, if they were to pay players, the money should be used to benefit the their education in the form of scholarships. Also paying athletes will individualize the sports, much like how professional sports are now. Lastly, paying all athletes would cost far too much for the NCAA. Scholarships as Currency If college athletes were to be paid, it should be in the form of scholarships. From my own experience colleges have switched from the traditional four year scholarship, to one year grants. This is where the argument first stems from. A four year scholarship guarantees the athlete financial support throughout their four year stay at the institution. It covers all the basic finances of a college student such as tuition, fees, and room and board(Mitchell). On the other...

Summary: Should College Football Players Be Paid

...2011 to 2013, college football players should be paid because “In some way they’re (The NCAA) taking advantage of college athletes that sign their name to a certain school.” A few other reasons college football players should be paid is that they could get hurt and might not have enough money to get a good start on life after college, colleges have extra money for equipment, coaches, and fields, and college football players spend a lot of time playing their sport and don’t have time to get a full-time job. One reason that college football players should be paid is that they could get hurt and might not have enough money to get a good start on life after college. Health. US News says Former college football players were more than twice as likely to have physical problems that limited their daily activities and exercise. Sixty-seven percent of these former athletes said they had suffered a major injury. (“For Many College Athletes, the Payoff Is Lifelong Disabilities: Study”). These players focus all of their time on football, sometimes forty hours a week, and they blow out a knee, or roll an ankle, ruining their chance in the NFL. Shouldn’t they at least have a little money to cushion them out of college and get them on their feet? That’s the first reason college...

Should Student-Athletes Get Paid?

...Thomas Bessinger Professor Hortman February 18, 2014 Should Student-Athletes get paid? A very popular question that has been lingering around the sports world for sometime now is whether or not student-athletes should get paid. There are a lot of different opinions about this topic. The NCAA does not allow student-athletes to receive any type of benefits of any kind from the university; if the student-athlete does, he is no longer an amateur athlete and can no longer compete at the college level. This problem has been common over the past years and is causing athletes and universities to be penalized. If the NCAA would allow student-athletes to receive some benefits this would not be as common. Therefore, student-athletes should get paid because they are making money for their university, many student-athletes cannot have a job, and it is unfair for the NCAA to profit off of student-athletes. This reasoning has led many people to try and incorporate change in the collegiate world. Student-athletes, particularly at “big time” schools, have been bringing in millions of dollars in for their universities. The universities are selling jerseys that have the athletes’ names on the back, but the student-athletes are not receiving anything from that (Chen, 2013). Student-athletes are not even allowed to sell their jerseys or other apparel that is given to them by the university. In 2010 the NCAA did an investigation and found out that AJ Green sold one of his jerseys for $1000...
