The Book Thief novel is centered on the themes of rebellion and conformity to the different directives that the Hitler Germany gave to citizens. Hitler who was the German leader in the second world war used propaganda to sell his policies to the Germans to ensure that they conformed to what he aspired. In Hitler’s Germany, it was not about doing the right thing but conforming to the expectations of the ruler. Not all persons, however, could conform to the wishes of the leader and some rebelled out of being convinced that conforming was the wrong thing to do and when the expectations bordered on cruelty to other human beings. In the face of oppression and subjugation, the society rebels in measured ways to preserve its dignity.

All along Hans Huberman had known that there was a Jew who was hid in the basement by one of his friends. When the friend was conscripted into the army to go and fight in the war, he understood that the Jewish friend required relocation and transferred him to his basement (Zusak 129). There were numerous close calls when the Nazis would have uncovered the plot, but the sense of rebellion towards the atrocities committed by the Nazis prevailed making him and family prefer to take personal risks. Hitler had stolen their life as shown in the enormity of losses that Liesel faced. She had lost her whole family to the atrocities of Hitler, lost friends in the bombings(Zusak 69), lost her childhood as children could no longer play without minding the Nazis and the bombs and was about to lose her literary culture through burned books. It is only through the books that she could bury her grief, but the decree was to burn all the books that sought to define humanity contrary to Nazi ideology.
