The story “Reconciliation” was written in 2006, by Polly Park. Laura is the narrator in the text “Reconciliation” we start in quickly into the events. We see the world from the narrator point of view, this point of view; help us to characterizing Laura, because when we see the world from her point of view.
The story is told by a first person, and we see the story from Laura’s point of view. Laura is also the narrator in the text. Laura is a person there haven’t an organised life, already in this quote, we know that Laura is a person with good ideas “It saved me 20 minutes this morning” ll.15. Laura feels in the beginning that she doesn’t fit god in, “It’s a bunker in hazardous beige. The soles of my feet toil across the industrial carpet. The desks are lined up like cars in a jam, each with a driver who never looks up. There’s no sound except the clicking of computer keys and my feet, flailing across the carpet" ll. 10-12. This quote tell us that, Laura doesn’t fell comfortable with her new job, but after some times she begins to fell better with her new job. “Here and there, tinsel has been wrapped around the edges of desks and hung around whatever is on the wall: a fire extinguisher, a health and safety notice. I warm up a little" ll. 12-15. But Laura find out after some times that, her boss also is her Ex-husband. And already in the beginning when we meet Veron, Laura describe him as a person there don’t trust anybody, even his wife, “His arms in his shiny blue shirt are curved protectively around his papers, as if all of us, being human, are prone to cheating” ll. 26-27. Because this sentence also show that, they don´t communicate any more. Laura have it very difficult with her ex-husband, because they don´t talk together any more, “We regard each other over months of silence” ll. 42. This quote proof that they don’t have a good relationship. But Laura’s ways of think about her husband change, when she gets a pair of numbers. She comparative the numbers with her husband, and that’s why Laura get so angry when she can´t get the number 22.49 to fit in. The numbers in the text, have an important meaning for the imagery in the text. When she get 418.80 to fit in, she wants to show Veron this, because it´s very important for her, because she now that Veron expect her to get all the numbers fit together, “ I highlight the pair. My success glows. Where is Veron?” l. 91-92. But when she can´t gets 22.49 to fit together she got very angry, because if she can get the number to fit in, she also have something I common with Veron.
“Reconciliation” is a word, their say very much about the text. Because Laura wants ”reconciliation” with Veron, but the only way to get that is, do what he expects of her. But the funny thing with the word “reconciliation” is that, it means on Danish (forlig or forsoning), that is the two choices Laura have, If she can get a pair of numbers she will get a “reconciliation” with Veron, but if she can’t do it, then she will get a negative “reconciliation”
The theme is love and life. If think the one of the theme is love, because this text show us how many peoples relationships with their ex-husband is. Laura tells us in the beginning they were in totally loved, but after some time, they loosed the love. This is something I think there is a big problem today, because many lose the love. But one of the theme is life, because Laura is in a dilemma should she do what there is expected from her, or should she do it on her way.
When we see the world from the narrator point of view, we have to be very critic, because we only see, and feel the same as the narrator. But we can easily characterizing the narrator, because we now how she e.g. think about Veron. Because she want to impress him, and she work very hard to get a pair of numbers to fit together. Laura wants the old love back, but shall she live her life on her way, or shall she do what people expect from her, and get the love.
