Santa Monica Community College is looking to fill a position for an administrative assistant position in the Computer Science & Information’s Department with a schedule to work 11 months per year, and for the STEM and Supplemental Instruction Programs with a schedule to work 12 months per year. Each position would be a Monday thru Friday 40 hour per week position. “Positions in this classification perform vocational secretarial duties and provide administrative support for College management and faculty leaders in instructional, academic and support service functional areas” (www.govermentjobs.com).
Recruitment of the administrative assistant position is open to all applicants that have located the job posting on the government jobs website. There is a specified date and time that the application is open to apply and also a time by which the application must be submitted for possible consideration. The time frame for which it will be open is Monday, December 10th through Wednesday, December 12th. The initial screening process for the position begins by going thru all of the candidates that have applied and choosing those that best fit the criteria for the position. Since it is an administrative assistant position clerical skills, receptionist skills, etc will possibly take precedent over other skills some candidates may possess. Any and all candidates are open to apply but there are keywords that the screeners are looking for in order to establish whether you have the experience that Santa Monica College is looking for to fill the position.
With this administrative assistant position there are two selection processes to narrow down the candidates to those that are qualified. Once the applicants are selected they will be invited to participate in a written (pass or fail) test. The top 20 candidates from the written test will then be selected for the technical project. Then the top 10 candidates of the technical project will be selected for the Qualifications Appraisal Interview, and candidates must receive a 70% of higher to be placed on the eligibility list. All candidates will remain on the eligibility list until a position is available within one year of being placed on the list.
Placement for the administrative assistant position at Santa Monica College occurs once you are placed in the pool of qualified candidates. When a position becomes available Santa Monica College goes through their list and selects the new hire that they feel would be best capable of maintaining that department. A high criteria match could also be if the job position that is vacant is in the same department that the new hire is also majoring in. Santa Monica College seems to put all candidates through a rigorous process to weed out those that they feel may not be qualified. Although a test cannot determine a person’s work ethic testing does help to ensure that the candidates have certain qualities or are capable of working certain programs. Having a recruitment and screening process helps to ensure that Santa Monica College is hiring someone that is qualified to do all of the tasks that are required for the job position, and can also possibly help to lower the turnover rate of employees within the company.
