Tragedy of Sandy Hook

It’s been two years since the tragic killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School. On December 14th 2012, 20 year old Adam Lazan stormed into the school taking the lives of twenty innocent children and six adults and his own mother. To this date, I believe that this is one of the most heart-rending and grievous events that has happened. How could someone have the audacity to take the life of a single child yet alone twenty? What could this young man possible be going through to take it out on mere babies? One cannot comprehend why Adam would cause a lifetime of heartache and pain for the families of those who lost love ones in one dreadful day. I try to imagine how scared those children must have been but also how braved they were, trying to keep quiet and motionless so they could live to see this day. Images of their friends being killed before their eyes will forever be tainted in their memory.
On a personal level, my heart broke for the fallen. A mother waiting for her child to return from school, a husband waiting for his wife, a sibling waiting for his/her brother/sister to play with; only to find out that day will never come. Their lives have been taken away by a man, who did it for selfless reasons, a man who took out his own personal distress on little girl who will never see a next birthday or go to her high school prom. He dealt with his anger and frustration on the little boy who would never get his license or be the next star player on the football team. He let out his rage on the teacher who would never go home to her kids or get engaged. I mourn for those who never got a chance and for the families who are to this day still experiencing the most dreadful pain of all.
What was this man’s motive? The answer to this question will forever be unknown as this young man took his own life after his shooting. But I believe that it is not a motive that’s needed but the cause. What was going through Adams head days, hours, minutes before the shooting? I believe that targeting small children, first graders, was the only way Adam could control emotional dominance. It was the only way he could manage because they were small and weak, hence the reason why he killed his mother in her sleep. Persons who knew him said he was a timid and compliant individual and was never aggressive or threatening but I think that this is the image he was trying to portray while plotted his plan. I believe that Adam experienced something that pushed him over the edge. In my honest opinion, Adam was not in his right mind. He was said to have a mental illness and OCD but it was much more than that. Mental illness is a behavior pattern that is seen when a person interacts and Adam was isolated from society, even his own mother. As a parent you should have some concerned as to why your son, minus himself from the world. Adam spent his time in him room, on the computer and playing video games; games that involved shooting and killing. His life was shrinking down to little more than video games and violent fantasies. If he’s mother was aware of this and paid attention to these behavioral patterns, I think that some action could have been taken to prevent what happened on this dreadful day. Adam violent fantasies would have remained just that, a horrific fantasy. Unfortunately, on December 14th 2012, I was heartbroken as I listened to how one young man took the lives of 27 person; his mother, employees and students at the Sandy Hook Elementry School. Everything in life has a lesson behind it, and this serves as a test for parents to get more involved in their children’s life. To try their best to get into their heads and understand what you child is going though as an individual. No one would have thought that timid Adam could do such a thing, but he did. In the same way understand your child that history doesn’t repeat itself. It takes much more than a week or a month to fully comprehend and understand the full scope of what actually happened and even more time for sense of loss to sink in.
Each day there is a silent battle between good and evil; and on that day, evil won. It is only human to wish such realities didn’t exist. So many lives were affected on that day by this tragedy. I’ve asked myself countless times what kind of person would do such a thing and why this had to happen. Its frustrated me to know that I may never fully understand and though I wish I could, the hands of time cannot be turned back; on that day of devastation

Modern Society Argue

...Chapter 1: Introduction Background Few in modern society argue that gun related violence is not a problem that requires attention. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, firearm homicides account for roughly 11,000 of the 16,000 homicides that occur the United States annually (2013). The subject of gun control has been a topic that has generated an enormous amount of controversy and attention. When one hears the term “gun violence”, vile acts against humanity, such as the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary and Columbine High School, come to mind. More recently, the rise in extremist acts of terror has heightened the public’s concern over gun control. In the aftermath of multiple occasions, President Obama has publically called for stronger gun control laws, specifically calling for stricter background checks among other provisions. In response to the public’s concern for safety, the president used executive action which increased the number of businesses which require federal licenses to sell guns, thus increasing the number of dealers requiring background checks when selling firearms (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2016). This is, of course, not a one-sided argument. The subject creates strong feelings across the political spectrum. Gun rights groups, such as the NRA, suggest that gun control laws are not only unconstitutional, but actually leave citizens in more danger by preventing them from using their best form of protection (National Rifle...

Life of Pi

...Acclaim for Yann Martel's Life of Pi "Life of Pi is not just a readable and engaging novel, it's a finely twisted length of yarn— yarn implying a far-fetched story you can't quite swallow whole, but can't dismiss outright. Life of Pi is in this tradition—a story of uncertain veracity, made credible by the art of the yarn-spinner. Like its noteworthy ancestors, among which I take to be Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, the Ancient Mariner, Moby Dick and Pincher Martin, it's a tale of disaster at sea coupled with miraculous survival—a boys' adventure for grownups." —Margaret Atwood, The Sunday Times (London) "A fabulous romp through an imagination by turns ecstatic, cunning, despairing and resilient, this novel is an impressive achievement. . . . Martel displays the clever voice and tremendous storytelling skills of an emerging master." —Publisher's Weekly (starred review) "[Life of Pi] has a buoyant, exotic, insistence reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe's most Gothic fiction. . . . Oddities abound and the storytelling is first-rate. Yann Martel has written a novel full of grisly reality, outlandish plot, inventive setting and thought-provoking questions about the value and purpose of fiction." —The Edmonton journal "Martel's ceaselessly clever writing . . . [and] artful, occasionally hilarious, internal dialogue . . . make a fine argument for the divinity of good art." —The Gazette "Astounding and beautiful. . . . The book is a pleasure not only for the subtleties of its philosophy...

Hia Its Ya Birthdya

...Yann Martel: Life of Pi life of pi A NOVEL author's note This book was born as I was hungry. Let me explain. In the spring of 1996, my second book, a novel, came out in Canada. It didn't fare well. Reviewers were puzzled, or damned it with faint praise. Then readers ignored it. Despite my best efforts at playing the clown or the trapeze artist, the media circus made no difference. The book did not move. Books lined the shelves of bookstores like kids standing in a row to play baseball or soccer, and mine was the gangly, unathletic kid that no one wanted on their team. It vanished quickly and quietly. The fiasco did not affect me too much. I had already moved on to another story, a novel set in Portugal in 1939. Only I was feeling restless. And I had a little money. So I flew to Bombay. This is not so illogical if you realize three things: that a stint in India will beat the restlessness out of any living creature; that a little money can go a long way there; and that a novel set in Portugal in 1939 may have very little to do with Portugal in 1939. I had been to India before, in the north, for five months. On that first trip I had come to the subcontinent completely unprepared. Actually, I had a preparation of one word. When I told a friend who knew the country well of my travel plans, he said casually, "They speak a funny English in India. They like words like bamboozle." I remembered his words as my plane started its descent towards Delhi, so the word bamboozle ...

...A Preface of Quotations Whoever desires for his writings or himself, what none can reasonably condemn, the favor of mankind, must add grace to strength, and make his thoughts agreeable as well as useful. Many complain of neglect who never tried to attract regard. It cannot be expected that the patrons of science or virtue should be solicitous to discover excellencies which they who possess them shade and disguise. Few have abilities so much needed by the rest of the world as to be caressed on their own terms; and he that will not condescend to recommend himself by external embellishments must submit to the fate of just sentiments meanly expressed, and be ridiculed and forgotten before he is understood. --Samuel Johnson Men must be taught as if you taught them not; And things unknown propos'd as things forgot. --Alexander Pope Style in painting is the same as in writing, a power over materials, whether words or colors, by which conceptions or sentiments are conveyed. --Sir Joshua Reynolds Whereas, if after some preparatory grounds of speech by their certain forms got into memory, they were led to the praxis thereof in some chosen short book lessoned thoroughly to them, they might then forthwith proceed to learn the substance of good things, and arts in due order, which would bring the whole language quickly into their power. --John Milton Introduction Good writing depends upon more than making a collection of statements worthy of belief, because writing is intended to...

His father, Josiah Franklin, was a tallow chandler who married twice, and of his seventeen children Benjamin was the youngest son. His schooling ended at ten, and at twelve he was bound apprentice to his brother James, a printer, who published the "New England Courant." But the brothers quarreled, and Benjamin ran away, going first to New York, and thence to Philadelphia, where he arrived in October, 1723. He soon obtained work as a printer, but after a few months he was induced by Governor Keith to go to London, where, finding Keith's promises empty, he again worked as a compositor till he was brought back to Philadelphia by a merchant named Denman, who gave him a position in his business. On Denman's death he returned to his former trade, and shortly set up a printing house of his own from which he published "The Pennsylvania Gazette," to which he contributed many essays, and which he made a medium for agitating a variety of local reforms. In 1732 he began to issue his famous "Poor Richard's Almanac" for the enrichment of which he borrowed or composed those pithy utterances of worldly wisdom which are the 1 basis of a large part of his popular reputation...
