As a Reception/ Kindergarten teacher with nearly 10 years of experience in helping children and their parents settle into starting school for the first time, I’ve always considered this area one that I am really comfortable about with giving advice and support. However, I finally find the shoe on the other foot with my firstborn starting school for the first time and I thought I’d write a Top Tips style post about starting school, very much keeping in mind that this is now all new to me too from the other side, finally being the parent instead of the teacher. So, if your little one is starting school or preschool for the first time, then let’s do this together! Here’s what I’ve learned so far, but I know there’s so much more for me to learn this year!

Lots of the following ideas will obviously depend on the character of you and your child and the flexibility and communicative nature of the school they will be attending. Just choose the bits that are helpful and leave the rest!

Preparing Emotionally: …show more content…
It may be the cause of a huge bag if mixed emotions, both the excitement about growing up and moving onto the next step, and the sadness at watching them become more independent in the sense that they don’t need us as much. Ultimately it’s a wonderful thing that they will be growing, learning, developing and building character but it’s definitely a whole new world. [Side note before I continue, this isn’t a post about home-school vs state school and I very much admire and love the whole concept of homeschooling, just in-case anyone had concerns on that

Value Reflection Paper

...Values Reflection Paper Thomas Guerrero CJA 474 November 24, 2014 David Pettinari Values Reflection Paper Regardless of whether people work in the government or private sector, military or civilian, they will commonly ask, “what are my core values?” Most people are taught personal values from the early years of childhood, and throughout adolescence. In addition to parents, many public figures instill some values (such as respect) in the minds of young adults stronger than other values. Respect is one of my core values, and something that most kids from inner-city Chicago learn about. This paper focuses on core values. In this paper, I will reflect on my core values, describe the development and change of values, and explain the nature and importance of human values in the workplace. Core Values With the numerous amounts of social influences today, it may be hard for adolescents to decide which vales they believe to be most important. However, adolescents and adults are constantly faced with the question, what do you want to be or do in life? According to De Janasz, Dowd, & Schneider (2001), “Identifying your values will help you answer the question “What do I want to achieve with my life?” Once you determine your values and why they are important to you, you can then work on a plan for achieving your goals (p. 51).” Growing up in the tough neighborhoods of Chicago, it is easy to learn the values of right and wrong. It’s learned from award ceremonies...

Reflection Essay

...Unit 11: Reflection Essay At the start of this semester my feelings towards writing altogether was extremely negative, whether it was writing a short one paragraph letter or a five page essay I wanted nothing to do with it. Never seeing the point, I have always had a hard time just starting the essay. I could not find the inspiration to write what was needed to create the work of literature my teacher expected of me. With that being said, I can honestly admit that I have never actually completed any writing assignments out of class and next to none of the assignments done in class. Needless to say I have probably failed all but one year in English classes, and the one I passed was because the teacher received a death threat from a student and left the school. Most of the teachers simply spent his/her time keeping me in line so as not to distract the other students. This semester, however, I definitely feel my writing has improved. I have a better understanding of how to structure my entire paper, whether its sentence structure or paragraph layout, what parts of speech should not be used in a paper and to limit my use of contractions. This class has also taught me to spend more time outside of school working on perfecting my work which I plan to take into later classes. All of these changes were made possible because for the first time I had a teacher who was able to make the subject enjoyable and fun. I definitely had the easiest time with the assignments that allowed me to...

Entrepreuneurship - Learning from Failure

...from failure Florian Moron ID: 33265062 Lancaster University Management School Michaelmas Term 2012 Entrepreneurs typically learn from failure. “Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success”. In this respect, Dale Carnegie (2010) argues that one of the most important lessons from success is failure. It is interesting that Carnegie talks of failure being in everybody’s past, indicating that failure is not a process confined to the entrepreneur. The research undertaken for this paper has been concentrated on four different previous researches of Cope (2009), Ucbasaran et al. (2009, 2012) and Cardon et al. (2009). Attitudes toward failure are not homogeneous among entrepreneurs, however those who have experienced it are disputably more prepared for the battle of entrepreneurship. As a result it is beyond question to understand the deeply affective dimension of failure that include the loss of the venture and the personal loss. Cope’s paper (2009) stresses that learning from failure is not automatic or instantaneous but it represents an essential prerequisite for learning (Wilkinson and Mellahi, 2005, cited by Cope 2009). The learning entrepreneurial experience of failure is articulated trough a major “grief recovery” composed of three interconnected learning components: an initial hiatus followed by a critical reflection and finally, a reflective action (Cope, 2003). Thus, there are different ways...

...Reflection Essay In the last eight weeks, I had an opportunity to look back and analyze the events that has shaped my grades/career. This was a unique experience where I was emotionally comfortable enough to look back at my life in school. I was able to objectively revisit many events that were often buried and too painful to face. I was free from the turmoil of emotional fears of failure, anger, and regret, which often clouded my perception. I was able to dwell on many pleasant and unpleasant events with more comfort and confidence. I accepted each module as part of life, regardless of whether it was good or bad experience. I understand that life transpires even when we are not prepared for it, but more importantly, it is how we deal with circumstances that keep us going forward. For the first time, there was clarity and I became aware of two main points one was my life changing/challenging experience and second was my educational growth. My life has been a journey filled with challenging experience, which consist of some unfixable actions, live bearing children at an early age. I grew up in an authoritarian, disciplined environment where personal expression and freedom was not tolerated. Since I could remember, there was a constant pressure for me to graduate from college with honors. Over the years the burden of not being able to convey my feelings and endless demands grew to fear and discomfort toward school. The day all of the Supervisors and Managers starting...

E-Portfolio Advantages And Disadvantages

...e- Portfolio For decades, students have been completing assignments in school. Often, these were seen only by the teacher, graded and returned to the student. Sometimes, the work was posted on a classroom wall or in a school hallway. Many teachers kept portfolios of student work for report card conferences, and the rare teacher taught students how to build their own portfolios from their work. With more and more schools going paperless or migrating to the "cloud", student work has become more easily shareable, accessible by many, and more easily organized. Many teachers have turned to digital portfolios -- or "e-portfolios" -- for their students. These digital portfolios have caused a huge shift in how teachers assign, collect and assess student...

Cabling Factors

...graduation vowing to never enter a classroom again. Didn’t take long for another battle to begin without my awareness, forcing me to break my vow. It was probably a foolish vow to begin with anyway. But even after doing so, starting school again, I didn’t get very far. So what was all that for? Why did I go through that to make a noble decision only just to fail? I consider myself as a late bloomer, though I was given a heads-up on the new world I was entering, I still didn’t get until I was in it. Getting as much advice from wiser people as possible still didn’t give me enough common sense to go out and follow that advice given. Whoever had that problem? How were you able to break it? Now I’m back at that same decision I made all those years ago, and I feel so much different from before. What happened? What changed? What gave me this confidence and courage repeat what I failed in the past? Everyone experiences life similarly but differently. This introduction only will attract those who may have had the same thought process as my own. This is a reflection of personal issues with oneself, and who is willing to break these weaknesses by any means. This is not a guideline for I can’t tell anyone how run their life. This is for you to take a pencil and paper and write down any relevant notes that you feel may help you in your process of becoming a stronger person. This is only what was going on in my...

Failure to Rescue

...Running head: FAILURE TO RESCUE Failure to Rescue Barbara Combes Breckenridge School of Nursing ITT Technical Institute July 15, 2014 FAILURE TO RESCUE Abstract This paper describes failure to rescue (FTR), according to recent studies. Failure to rescue is discussed in terms of importance to nursing. The paper speculates on how knowing about failure to rescue may help in the nursing course studies and critical thinking skills. FAILURE TO RESCUE Introduction According to a 2007 article in Med Care, use of failure to rescue as an indicator of hospital quality and patient safety has increased over the past decade. Researchers have used different sets of complications and deaths to define this measure. (Silber JH, Romano PS, Rosen AK, Wang Y, Even-Shoshan O, Volpp KG, 2007).
