Reflection Paper It was mid-day Tuesday on August 25th, I pull in Turner Avenue Garage Level 7, not having any money on me, I decided to change my parking ticket from the previous day, August 24th and change it to the 25th. At first I was thinking about doing it but I didn’t because I knew it was wrong and I left the parking garage. But two days later, on August 27th, using the same ticket from August 24th, running late to my 8am class, I decided to alter my parking ticket from the previous day. At the time it appeared to be a “good” yet foolish notion, in an urgent mindset to get to class with a hint of incautiousness, I used a sharpie and simply changed the date to the current date (August 27th). My desperation clearly clouded my judgment because the day before I knew how wrong it was to do something like that. After class I lost track of time and got busy with work. I parked at the garage from 8am and came back to the garage around 5pm, that was when I noticed my vehicle was missing; I was looking around the parking garage for a couple of minutes to see if I misplaced my parking spot but after awhile I finally asked two employees who were around the vicinity if they saw what had happened to my car. One of the gentlemen said if it wasn’t where I had left it, it might have been towed, and if that was the case, I should call MUPD. I did as he suggested and the campus police did verify that my vehicle was indeed towed and I had to pick it up at Tigers Towing. Left immobile, I phoned my roommate and asked him if he could drive me to the tow lot, he kindly agreed. He showed up 30 minutes later then we headed to the towing company. Once I got there, the employee told me to fill out could of forms and paid a towing fee of $70 to get my car out. As soon as I got in my car, I noticed a ticket from the university worth $50. So I got a total of $120 worth of fines for something I could easily had avoided. The solo drive back home was full of self-disappointment, and immediate regret, the day felt like a hazy dream. Why did I do it? If I had thought about the situation for 10 more seconds, the concluding judgment would have been different; I was rash and stubborn which is unlike me. I did not recognize myself anymore, the normal Burhan is a timid guy who is observant and abides by the rules, not the impatient, illogical guy I was that day.
A couple of weeks fly by and I receive an email from the office of student conduct instructing me to meet with the Office of Student Conduct Hearing Officer Paul Heddings. At the meeting, I met with Mr. Heddings and he asked about what had happened, I explained the incident to him and after the meeting with Mr. Heddings, I received a follow up warning email stating that if I violated any more University rules or Violations, harsher sanctions would be placed on me. Furthermore, my parking privilege to park in the core-campus area had been revoked and if I had a core campus MU permit, I was to return it to the university parking transportation department at Turner Avenue Garage with a copy of the email when I turn it in. A 1500 word reflection paper was also stated in the email in order to lift the hold on my student account.
This reflection paper is the deciding factor that determines whether or not I can continue my education here at the University of Missouri. I love this school, that cannot be stressed enough, going here has always been my goal since high school. Being accepted was an honor and celebrations after celebrations were held in three continents (North America, Europe, and Africa) because my mother made sure to brag to her siblings that I had gotten into my dream college, something she couldn’t achieve but lived vicariously through each of her children.
Not only did my actions cost me 24 times more than the original price of the parking permit, which was only $5, but the entire ordeal took a toll on my mental health, constant sleepless nights have been my norm. The idea of having almost four years of my academic achievements wasted away makes me furious with myself; my stupidity jeopardized my future with a simple stroke of a sharpie, literally! With only one semester left in order to obtain my degree, everything is at stake. Stress accompanied with insomnia became my persistent rivals each night. I was sleepless for days, but I managed to pick myself up, got to class, attended seminars and owned up to my mistake.
I feared telling my family, it took me weeks of contemplating whether to tell them or not and it was not an easy decision coming from an open and loving home. It is hard keeping secrets from my mother and two older sisters, who have worked so hard to get me to where I am now. Coming clean with what I did would be like diminishing all their efforts and hard work, Immigrating from war torn Somali as a single mother with only her children for company and protection, my mother prevailed against all odds and made a suitable, safe life for her and her children. Being the youngest in the family, my only desire was and is to make my family proud, my mom mostly; furthermore I am profoundly disappointed with myself for lacking good judgment and for not foreseeing that such dishonest deeds always come with consequences. I lost sight of my identity and upbringings, it was simple, and “never lie and never cheat” was my mother’s favorite advice for my sisters and I. She was right, sooner or later all things done in the dark come to light, I should have purchased that parking ticket, I should have gotten up early that morning and made it to class on time, should not have lied my way through thinking I was not going to get caught, I should have acted like the mature, capable adult that I am and expected to be.
I have realized it is time to take responsibility for my actions, I am fully aware of the damage I have done to the university and myself. What this incident has taught me is truly a lifelong lesson that I will hopefully get to pass down. The road to success, happiness and a sense of self confidence can only be achieved by being sincere, to firstly myself and extend it to those around us. Being a decent person never hurt anyone; I know that now, before I think I knew only the idea of it, I feel as though I have grown up in the past few months. Looking back I see my growth and I am pleased and surprised, we really never stop growing, learning and maturing even in adulthood. The anger and disappointment I felt for myself is slowly diminishing, and I am more accepting and acknowledging that mistakes do and will happen as it is part of our growth as humans. I feel a sense of maturity and humility; this honestly has been an emotional and humbling experience.
I have definitely learned a valuable lesson, I’m grateful to the department and office of student conduct in calling me out on and addressing my behavior. In my culture we are taught to respect educators as though they were your parents, to fear and respect. Educators are the second parents and discipliner, it might have been one mistake but one mistake usually leads down to an endless spiral of deceit and trouble making. You have made me reevaluate myself an individual and understand my mistake, that there are no such things as shortcuts in life. A life lived in complete honesty makes a person more morally and ethically aware. Dishonesty only leads to distance, chaos, unfamiliarity, disappointment and unhappiness. Society is getting more distant from more common basic human moral codes, and disciplining us students in ways that will stick with us for perhaps the rest of our adulthood is commendable. I would like to conclude with thanking the educators for taking the time to read this, I know and understand my mistake very well now. I would like to apologize for wasting the University’s resources, time and effort; I want to apologize for violating the code of conduct by forging a parking ticket and to lastly ask for forgiveness. I truly do want to earn and eventually proudly say that I am University of Missouri alumni, I promise to live as honest and true as I can and stay out of anymore trouble.

Third Reflection Paper

...GE 2218 Third Reflection Paper “Write your own script for your play” this is the most impressing point I have learnt form Mr. Ki ‘ s success on his career, which is also the major principle for his career management. In this talk, Mr. Ki shed light on the meaning of success from different perspectives and dimensions. I can tell from his career that he is satisfied with what he did in the past and what he is doing now. There are two essential factors I can draw from his experience, reinvent your career and refine your life. For the points that he raised in this talk, I quite endorsed his unique perception on career that it is divided into three phases. “ Work for success”, “ work for significance” and “ work for legacy”. Apart from myself, I guess most of the people value ones’ success by wealth and positions. Mr. Ki , however, adds to that life structure, purpose, identity and significance. Exemplified by Mr. Ki ‘s career, he retreated from his respected working position just at the prime of his career simply because he wanted to do something meaningful, not only to his life but also to the whole society. So he transfers his prowess to help and engage in social enterprise project. Reinventing one’s career is equally important in a sense that it helps put your career into perspective, and achieve a balance of life, just like what Mr. Ki mentioned, the second career, the parallel career and the social career. Besides, always reflect on you experience as well as have a full...

How to Write Reflection Paper

...How to Write Reflection Essay Posted by Splice, Essay Tips Chief Writer How to Write a Reflection Essay. Basically, writing a reflection essay is a good exercise to sharpen your critical thinking skills. You have to understand what it is that you have to reflect on before proceeding with the essay, otherwise you will only lose track of your ideas or, worse, you will not be able to write anything that will make sense. Keep in mind that a reflection essay is more like a journal where you jot down your thoughts or how you feel about a certain topic. Your topic may be a film, a book, an event, or just about anything. Before starting with your reflection essay, ask yourself a couple of questions, such as: how do I feel about this topic? How does it affect me, if it does at all? If it doesn't affect me, why? Notice that the questions are all personal. That is because a reflection essay asks you to express your insights. Knowing the answers to these personal questions can help you begin your reflection essay. Do not limit yourself to these three questions. Explore more that asks you to state your opinion. Leave out the facts first. Concentrate on your insights. After having the answers to the personal questions stated above, list your answers. Thereafter, summarize them into a single sentence. This will be your main controlling idea or central thesis which will guide you throughout the rest of your reflection essay. With your thesis statement, identify the arguments or ideas that will...

Self Reflection Papers

...Being at Allegheny for this semester has taught me a lot about my writing habits. In almost all of my papers, I stray way off track just to make a point that needed one sentence of explanation. During the time I sent on my final portfolio, I really tried to focus on getting the point across in much shorter detail and making sure I am staying on topic. The thing that has helped me the most is the feedback I am receiving from you and my classmates. I decided to begin with my original research paper, which is my text of choice, and follow with my final draft of my research paper. My main reasoning behind that was to show how I interpreted the feedback from the in-class peer review. In my first draft, I only mentioned Willard Cutter in the first two paragraphs and the closer. During the research process, I had a very hard time finding information on Willard himself and not the Civil War in general, and that really shows in my paper. So during my revisions, I went back to special collections and incorporated information during those specific events and some of what Willard wrote to his family. With this, I made sure my paper has much more to do with Willard Cutter than just the main events of the Civil War, helping me stay more on topic...

Intro to Communication Chapter 5 Reflection Paper

...CMST 192 2:00-3:15 pm - Dr. Fischer Chapter 5 Reflection Listening skills are a very important for each and every person to have. Without them, how is one able to understand another? We are all guilty of poor listening at some point, especially in this generation because of all the technology we have access to. Cell phones are one of the biggest distractions to listening that I have seen. A lot of times you will see students sitting on their phones during the middle of a lecture or even sitting on their phones at a dinner table rather than listening to what the people around them have to say. Other examples of reasons for poor listening are things like the effort a person is willing to put in, being overloaded with too much information at once, not knowing enough about the topic prior, just listening to respond and not actually taking what the person is saying into consideration or simply just not having respect for a person who may be speaking. There are many ways that a person can help themselves become a better listener such as reducing noise, putting in the effort to listen, stay focused on the conversation, try to have prior knowledge, avoid distractions and be respectful! I personally am someone who is very easily distracted by my phone during classes and that is something I am trying to work on because as soon as I put it away I will get so much more out of the classes I am taking. Noise doesn’t just have to be physical, it can be psychological which is what distracts...

English 111 Reflection Paper

...Since I never been interested in reading I never really engaged with what I read about. It was not until last semester in my English 111 class that I started enjoying what I read by actually evaluating the text in further detail. Active reading means reading something in further detail by evaluating and analyzing the text in different ways then just re-reading the text. By doing this you establish more support in your assessment. This hands-on-way to read, by highlighting or writing in the margins, is a way to enhance the reader ability to expand their assessment of the text. Active reading also consists of reading, asking questions, and examining the text. This is different from any other reading technics I have used in the past. Active reading...

Remembering The Early Years Of Parenting

...Reflection has been proven to be an excellent teacher, especially after making an emotional based decision associated with parenting. Now that I have children in the third grade, reflecting on lofty expectations followed by a short temper after my hopes were dashed says a lot about leading by example. When reviewing various writings about parenting, pairing them with reflection on past behavior, it becomes very clear many lessons can be learned. Having patience, setting realistic goals and reacting to success or failure appropriately are all great marks to be judged by. While realizing no one is perfect, understanding the difficulties and struggles parents face with their children, as discussed by experts, having an owners manual for my children could come in very handy! Because parenting in general can by difficult, many studies have found the transition from infancy to adolescence even more difficult for fathers. Because the mother has time to bond with the child, specifically through labor and breastfeeding, fathers struggle to find a place and may not have appropriate time to bond. Some studies suggest playful interactions with their children as they grow can not only help a father bond with children but also help the father find and learn his role in parenting. (Machin, A. J. (2015). Remembering the early years of parenting, more...

...Political Science 1101 American Government Fall 2014 Dr. Joshua Kennedy Reflection Papers Each student is required to select ONE (1) of the course’s three main sections (Political Fundamentals, Political Institutions, and Political Linkages) on which to write a reflection paper. This paper will count for 75 of the total 350 points in your final course grade. It should be between 3 and 4 double-spaced pages (1 inch margins, Times New Roman, 11 or 12 point font). The purpose of the paper is to encourage you to think about what the section’s material conveys about American government and politics and what questions it raises for you. The most important skill to demonstrate in these papers is the ability to think critically. It is obviously good to know the material you have read and studied, but you should not simply be parroting back what is written in the textbook. Your paper ought to consider why these topics are grouped together in this manner, what gaps in knowledge remain, and your personal reflections on these questions. There are numerous ways to approach the assignment. To give you some idea of how you are going to be evaluated, a paper focusing on the first section of the course (Political Fundamentals) might focus on how theories and structures in the Constitution are more or less relevant to politics today. For example, your textbook implies that the Senate as an institution might be outdated – such a subject could make for interesting discussion based on your understanding...

My goals were to learn how to correctly write an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. This course has helped me reach those goals. Strategies I used to achieve those goals was doing research, using the reading material given to us through the Kaplan Library and studying. Without the reading material and the professor being so helpful I don’t think I could have achieved the goals I had set for myself. I am most proud of myself for learning how to write a thesis statement and why it is important. I never really knew how to start a paper correctly. Having an effective thesis in your introductory paragraph is very important. It can make your break paper. The thesis is a statement that tells what your paper is about and why. The project I just completed has taught me a lot. It has taught me to be more comfortable with my own writing skills. It has also taught me that I still need to work on citation and giving proper credit where it is due. I understand why we do citations but I just still need to work on it.
