Summary: This resource describes why outlines are useful, what types of outlines exist, suggestions for developing effective outlines, and how outlines can be used as an invention strategy for writing. Four Main Components for Effective Outlines Ideally, you should follow the four suggestions presented here to create an effective outline. When creating a topic outline, follow these two rules for capitalization: For firstlevel heads, present the information using all uppercase letters; and for secondary and tertiary items, use upper and lowercase letters. The examples are taken from the Sample Outline handout. Parallelism—How do I accomplish this? Each heading and subheading should preserve parallel structure. If the first heading is a verb, the second heading should be a verb. Example: I. CHOOSE DESIRED COLLEGES II. PREPARE APPLICATION ("Choose" and "Prepare" are both verbs. The present tense of the verb is usually the preferred form for an outline.) Coordination—How do I accomplish this? All the information contained in Heading 1 should have the same significance as the information contained in Heading 2. The use of simulations in education is becoming an effective tool for students and offers several benefits. A major benefit of simulations is that it enhances the problem solving skills of a student. This week Team D went through two simulations that allowed us to make ethical decisions based on the four lenses, where each had a different perspective in the decision-making process. ...Reflection Summary Week 3 This week we discussed the power of wireless devices, delved further into information systems, discussed protection of information assets, and probed some of the functions of Microsoft Excel as an office automation tool. We utilized two sources of readings from chapters in Introduction to Information Systems and Microsoft® Office 2010. We also participated in peer to peer discussions to evaluate our understanding of the subject matter. Wireless Technology Many of the wireless technologies today are well known and understood from an operator standpoint. That comes from the common necessity of technology in our daily lives. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. As discussed by Team D, we most certainly agree that we learned the stated, not only as a team, but as individuals. We all come from different walks of life and backgrounds; this diversity is what makes working together as a team so great. We all agree that we can apply what we learned to our professional or personal lives. Analyzing week two, we agreed that we had an inside look on what the six steps are during the planning process. These steps are situational analysis, alternative goals and plans, goals and evaluation, goals and plan selection, implementation, and finally monitor and control. We agree these steps are most important in the planning process and play an important role in setting up alternative goals and plans. With this significant change in workforce demographics, managers and employees have made many adjustments to not only accommodate these changes, but find ways to increase the productivity and efficiency in the workplace (Robbins & Judge, 2011). One of the most important elements in ensuring diversity is not only embraced, but capitalized on, is awareness and understanding of its limitless capabilities. Effective managers are able to analyze their workforce accurately and utilize their strengths in a highly productive, collaborative working environment. Jasper (2003) concluded that reflecting on action transformed experience into knowledge.
