Introduction to philosophy

PHIL 1001

How can you prove weather at this moment we are sleeping, and all our thoughts are a dream; or weather we are awake, and talking to one another in the waking state? Plato

For this reflection I founded it fascinating to consider different understanding of reality, I really enjoyed Plato Alegory of the cave amazing piece of art work what a great philosopher for that time period, also movie Matrix great movie directed by Wanch brothers. So questions we can all ask ourselves: Are things we see around us real, are they our reality, and how do we know that for sure, how do we know if we are dreaming or not. These are questions that unfortunately are out of our reach and only time will answer.

The Alegory of the cave is a famous story from the Plato Republic, it is a profound allegory with many interpretation, and in this reflection I will compare it to the movie Matrix, and my view of reality. “ Imagine the condition of men living in a sort of cavernous chamber underground, with an entrance open to the light and a long passage all down the cave. Here they have been from childhood, chained by the leg and also by the neck, so that they cannot move and can see only what is in front of them, because the chain will not let them turn their heads. At some distance higher up is the light of a fire burning behind them, and between the prisoners and the fire is a track with a parapet built along it, like a screen at a puppet show, which hides the performers while they show the puppets over the top.”(Solomon, 2010, p. 121). Prisoners lived this life since childhood they are bound with chairs but they are fed with illusions which kept them in dream state. The shadows on the wall made prisoners believed and kept them unaware of the fact that they are prisoners, so they don’t know what is life outside of that cave because they have never seen it or experiencing it. Shadows on the wall that prisoners are seeing are real for them, that is there reality and they believed in it. Prisoneres were not able to see the truth, but the fire in the cave is the sighn of light or small aspect of truth. Only one prisoner was able to see beyond that and experience different side of life. Here we can also see that truth was reative to the experience, because when prisoner returned to the cave no one believed him, although he knows what truth is it was relevant just for him because he is the one who had experiencing it. For Plato what he believed in our everyday experience is just a shadow and illusion, the real world is beyond that. So question in this life is it real are we awake or sleeping in it. Plato did not believed in the idea that the world we see is reality he tought that the world we see is just illusion of things. He strongly believed in mind and inteligents as a tool to see real things. According to Plato we can not teach reality, no one could be tought people had to see it for them selves. The only thing we can do is to direct them by people or someone who has been there already. With this Alegory what Plato is trying to tell us that all humans are prisoners of society. The ones who ask questions that can be more to this life then just shadows are intelectuals and they know that truth is not always obvious and in front of us. Plato view on the level of reality is that thinking critically and logically is number one in philosophy, he also believed that true knowledge and opinion can often be very different.

Matrix what a fantastic piece of art work directed by Wachowski brothers, the film looks at the perception of reality, the Matrix story is closely similar to allegory of the cave, the idea is the same. So for example, in the movie Matrix Neo was traped in the illusion although he things it is real because he does not see anything else. First when he seas the matrix he cannot believe it eventually he accepts the truth later on. So in the matrix people belived reality is the computer program because they lived in it. Same with cave, shadows of the wall that prisoners are seeing were real for them. In the Matrix humans think that they live free but robotic machines have englaving humans as living battery cells. Prisoners and people in Matrix are behind from true reality, they believe it is real because there sences are telling them so. In his Allegory Plato tries to explain relasionship between ignorance and knowledge, prisoners are ignorant because they know only one way and they don’t want to try to broaden their minds. Plato highly belived in logic, for him pure knowledge and truth could be reached only thru logic, mathematics and reasons, He want to seek knowledge beyond what we already know.

Question is did Plato intend for the Allegory of the Cave to have an ethical implicationor was it relevant just to human perception of reality and metaphisics. I thing Alegorry is subject to moral interpretation and ethical dilemas as well. For example, lets take a look at shadows they are passing falls knowledge to the prisoners and that could be unethical, another unethical dilemma that we can look at, escaped prisoner was killed by other prisoners when he returned and revealed the truth, then again moral duties nad obligations that escaped prisoner had towards others to make them aware of the truth he has just discovered. In this two documents we can also see that not all people are treated equally we can see that some are fit to be rule and others are are fit to be rulled. In the matrix character Cybher betrayed his friend for shelphish goal and lied so how we shall behave and conduct.

Do we live in the matrix or cave I believe that our matrix is in our hands and mind and we can creat it, I think if we believe in all of the media, government and religion then we are placing ourselves in matrix and does it become our falls reality. My point on reality from this class that I am taking is that not always what is directly in front of us is true and real. To get a true knowledge we have to use new perspective. Lots of times majority can be wrong, so should our society be organized on the basis of majorit then? As we can see in Allegory prisoners symbolizes with the majority of the people, for prisoners shadows are perceived as real and most of us believe that everything we hear, smell, tast is real we don’t question appearance and we don’t examine furthere. Are we able to subject our beliefs and ideas to critical exam and extantion. Most of us spend our lives in the cave limited by fear, time and afraid to change.

Ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates student who wrote The Republic and great story Allegory of the Cave, he shows as what is needed to achieve prfect society. I think one very important thing to remember above nad beyond us is God, when it comes to reality it is our individual perception of it, there are lots of things that we can not see and that we can not explain. I have realized that I and rest of us live in a cave of ignorance nad half truth until we go out and walk in other places and other shoes.

Has my knowledge base grown with this class and in which area. Deffinetely God I have read some of the worlds greathest thinkers and their work. This class tought me how to analyze arguments and use critical thinkinking skills even better. It has helped me in developing thinking skills, it has tought me how to think correctly and to use language carefully, which improved my interpersonal relacionships. With this class I become more aware of my responsibilities to contribute back to our society. Another questioned asked, which insides have I gained about my beliefes and did my philosophy changed? Honestly I have learned a lot about life and I become aware that I need to use critical thinking skills to determine truth for my self not just assume that something is right because majority things so . I was trying to understand our purpose in life and had compared differen philosophers and there view about life and living. I was intellectually stimulated in mamny areas: the existence of God, our reality, the existence of existence, the nature of truth and many more. We always do apply philosophy in our life for different things but this class had challenged me in many directions, it changed me how I frame question in my mind and had made me think around the world and myself. Philosophy focuses you to think for yourself and also focuses to open your mind in many areas, the use or reason in understanding such things as the nature of reality and existence. It helped me understand the world from a greather perspective then what I use to have. My philosophy on some major issues in life did not changed but I have learned so much from each other in this class and from the smartes philosophers in world, I have learned to be open in many directions to listen carefully what every and each one of us have to say and to respect other people opinions and view about life.

To conclude my reflection, I would have to say one thing we bust be willing to live with mystery of the unknown, all truth and all knowledge is tentative, I was challenged to self examine my life: we think that we know but do we, are we morals, we think that we live free but do we. Lot more questions that we can ask the most importan think is to be open minded, respectvul of otheses ideas nad belives, use logic don’t assume, use reason to examine and challenge always challenge ourselves educate and stay positive as one of our philosopher stated “Someday,in the distant future, our grandchildren's grandchildren will develop a new equivalent of our classrooms. They will spend many hours in front of boxes with fires glowing within. May they have the wisdom to know the difference between light and knowledge”

...experience of learning from reflection on giving intramuscular (IM) injections, using Gibbs's (1988) reflective model. I demonstrate how practice anxiety, as a student nurse, can be dealt with through effective mentoring. I chose the seminal theory of Gibbs reflection on practice, as it illustrates six significant stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis of the incident, conclusion and an action plan Ghaye and Lillyman (1997). Gibbs cycle is used throughout the process of reflecting on the incident to help me make sense of my practice and understand what l could do differently to enhance good practice. I use my experience from a placement simulation as I could not be on actual placement due to unforeseen circumstances. Reflection is a process through which healthcare practitioners and students can learn from experience and use the knowledge to inform and improve practice Schon, (1983). The ability to reflect on one's actions is particularly imperative in clinical practice and discourse. As Jarvis (1992) asserted, there is no consensus on the definition of reflection as it is a broad concept. Reid (1993, p305.) define reflection as; “a course of action reviewing an occurrence of practice to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice” Schon (1983) identified two types of reflection which are; reflection in action, which takes place during the event where the practitioner may not be aware that it is happening and reflection on action, which takes place...

...and its impact on me and other colleagues. Using Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle I will identify the situation in which the issue arose, the thoughts and feelings it evoked, an evaluation of positive and negative aspects experienced. I will analyse the situation in order to reach a conclusion and to formulate an action plan. To preserve patient and staff confidentiality no one will be named. I believe Gibbs model of reflection to be a framework with which I can address an issue from the workplace as I find it easy to utilise and believe it supports my reflective learning style as a pragmatist. Cottrell (2008). This approach to learning advocates Ryle (1949) where thoughts and feelings impact directly on the way we behave. This way of thinking suits me personally as I trained as a Cognitive Behavioural Counsellor and believe I take a rational and cognitive approach to problems. Neenan and Dryden (2004). Consequently I believe it to be a model or framework with which I can use as I develop as an Assistant Practitioner. The incident I am using for reflection for this essay involves an 87 year old lady that had suffered a pre-tibia laceration and attended the minor injuries department of Accident and Emergency. Following examination by a Nurse Practitioner I was asked to treat the injury. I cleaned the wound aseptically removing the developing Haematoma from under the skin flap and occluded using steri-strips. A Mepitel non- adhesive dressing was then applied. I secured the...

...boundaries and leads to better communication and therefore a better outcome for the patient. (Pullen & Mathias, 2010) Being able to reflect upon situations is vital in the role of the nurse. Being able to examine personal thoughts and perceptions enables the nurse to have greater self awareness and build upon strengths and develop personal and professional competencies. (Somerville, D. et al 2004) Reflection has been described as being able to think about a situation, make sense of it and ultimately learn from it. (Clarke and Graham 1996) Taking a period of time to reflect and review a situation allows a person to move on and through the learning experience, become a better practitioner (Bulman et al 2012) By being able to reflect and ask myself what would I do differently or could my practice have been better will only help to develop my skills and knowledge and influence my future as a practitioner in a positive way. Having looked at several reflective models of learning, such as Gibbs (1988), Driscoll (2000) and Dewey, I have decided to use the Kolb (1984) model of reflection throughout this assignment. Kolb's (1984) experiential theory of learning has four distinct stages of a cycle. This incorporates an actual learning experience; being involved in a situation, then observing someone one else in that situation, reflecting upon...

Reflection

...1 Reflection Reflection is an everyday process. We reflect on a range of everyday problems and situations all the time: What went well? What didn’t? Why? How do I feel about it? We don’t usually follow a formula for this, it just happens as feelings, thoughts and emotions about something gradually ‘surface’. We might choose to do something differently, or not, as a result of reflecting, but reflection is essentially a kind of loose processing of thoughts and feelings about an incident, a meeting, a day – any event or experience at all. Reflection can be a more structured way of processing in order to deal with a problem. This type of reflection may take place when we have had time to stand back from something, or talk it through, as in: ‘On reflection, I think you might be right’, or ‘On second thoughts, I realised he was more upset than me.’ Structured reflection If we consciously reflect, maybe as part of our work or family role, there tends to be a rough process of ‘How did it go? What went well? Why? What didn’t? Why? What next?’ Examples might be of a football coach reflecting after a match, a teacher reflecting on a lesson, or simply a parent thinking about how best to deal with a teenager. In this kind of reflection, the aim is to look carefully at what happened, sort out what is really going on and explore in depth, in order to improve, or change something for next time. This brief guide will look at what is meant by reflection, suggest forms of structured...

...of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as a guide: The names of the patient, staff members and health care setting will be changed to protect...

Reflection of Techniques

It is through interpretation of their value in regards to how confident you are rather than a systematic and calculated approach. This means the level you suggest you are currently achieving could be over or under the realistic level. -Answering is subjective and could have an element of bias. There are no set criteria to base the level and descriptive answering on. Learning Styles Questionnaire +Questions asked reinforce a particular learning style when answers are collated, to make the claim to be stronger in a particular learning style more valid. +Questions can be related to the careers work that I do and therefore indicate the learning styles I tend to use in appointments. -Questions can be interpreted in a variety of situations, so the answers given may not truly reflect the learning styles being used. -Final scoring of answers given doesn’t indicate the scale of which a learning style is used. It is only an indication and further analysis would need to be used to definitively suggest the learning styles more suited to an individual. My results are fairly even and don’t indicate...

...Date: 27th October, 2014 Title: Morrisons breaks pledge on low prices Link: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Retail_and_leisure/article1475669.ece The ethical issue was related to credibility of a company. It was about Morrisons the supermarket increased prices of some products marked with “I’m cheaper” sign after promising to cut prices permanently on over 1000 goods six months ago. The supermarket claimed the rise in prices was only a reflection of “commodity inflation” and still “lower than they would have been” without the “I’m Cheaper”cuts. No doubt by increasing the price of goods, the supermarket could compensate the losses from the inflation in supply costs. This do help to maintain profitability of the supermarket and strengthen the confidence of its investors. Also, even though the prices had been raised, they were still lower than the general prices of these goods. The promise of enduring price cut was kept. It was a win-win situation in the eyes of Morrisons. One of the problems arose in this issue was the reputation of Morrisons towards the customers was deeply affected. Although action of increasing the prices due to inflation was justifiable, Morrisons still broke part of its vow of long-lasting price cut. A credibility gap between Morrisons and customers might have been develop as a result. Moreover, the intention of the supermarket was to maintain its profitability while the issue of the news had leaded to a fall in its share price of 0.46...

Reflection and Refraction

...Refraction and Reflection People often wonder why it is that when looking at fish in an aquarium, the fish seems to suddenly change to a different position as we look at them from different viewpoints. What makes Diamonds seem to sparkle so much, or even when a straw is inserted into a glass it looks tilted or at an angle. All of these questions has the same answer and are all examples of Refraction, Refraction is the change in direction of light as it changes speeds passing from one material into another, it slows down when light enters a denser material, and is also the key component in fiber-optic transmissions. Although reflection and refraction are often construed as one in the same they are however different. Reflection tends to occur when light bounces off of an object. But the amount of reflection often depends on how even the surface is. Meaning if a surface is smooth or even flat (specular) it will bounce off at equal angles; like when you look in the mirror at the reflection of yourself, or in a clam body of water. Or perhaps if the surface is rough (diffuse) the light will however scatter into different directions, like off of clothing or paper. Or for instance this is why the “setting sun” my have a reddish tint and why the sky is blue. Degradation could be defined as the ratio of optical output power to the input power in the fiber of length. Some factors that can cause degradation of signal strength in fiber-optic transmission are absorption (intrinsic...

Personal Reflection

...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...

The piece of work that is going to be discussed is The Welcoming Table by Alice Walker. This piece of literature captured my interest to a personal level. The piece of literature kind of hits home with what I see and how I feel that the woman that was presented in the literature was treated by the other people. The key terms that are going to be use to describe this literature piece will be tone, symbol, and figurative language. The main reason that this literature work captured my interest is because I can place myself in her shoes. I have been in positions and also have been in places that people did not want me there, or that I did not feel welcome in their circle. There was one incident that I remember; I was trying to find a church that could feel comfortable going to, some place that I can look for answers if I had questions. I believe that is what the little old woman was doing in the literature work in The Welcoming Table. It seems like the woman wanted to do was pray and be able to speak to Jesus in his own house. The people of the church did not want her to be there because she was not wearing the right clothes, and she was not like them, that is what I got from the reading. The people that were in the church were not happy...

In the unit two assignment we were asked to discuss our goals for college composition 1. Looking back at the goals I set for myself I do believe that I have achieved my goals. My goals were to learn how to correctly write an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. This course has helped me reach those goals. Strategies I used to achieve those goals was doing research, using the reading material given to us through the Kaplan Library and studying. Without the reading material and the professor being so helpful I don’t think I could have achieved the goals I had set for myself. I am most proud of myself for learning how to write a thesis statement and why it is important. I never really knew how to start a paper correctly. Having an effective thesis in your introductory paragraph is very important. It can make your break paper. The thesis is a statement that tells what your paper is about and why. The project I just completed has taught me a lot. It has taught me to be more comfortable with my own writing skills. It has also taught me that I still need to work on citation and giving proper credit where it is due. I understand why we do citations but I just still need to work on it. I will have to use this in other classes for papers. I think now is a time to set another goal for myself...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...
