Title: Reflections on Nutrition Course: SCI/241 Date: 4/3/12 Instructor: Kantrell Brown

Before I took this class I slept, eat, and drank because I was tired, hungry, or thirsty. My stomach was rumbling, I was bored, sad, happy, or just because ice cream and donuts looked and tasted good. I never really gave much thought into why my body needs food. I now realize that the food we eat provides the energy our bodies need to function. Like gas in one’s car or recharging our cell phones our bodies need to be fed energy to maintain our activities every day. It is our little helpers of vitamins and minerals that provide the adequate balance that keeps or bodies healthy. Every assignment that we had to do was a new learning experience. I like every assignment because it taught me something that I never thought about, especially the digestive system. This makes me realize how intricate our bodies are, and the transformation that happen when we open our mouth. It taught me how food and liquid are absorbed by the entire body and how this complex system is the secret to our health. Understanding how miraculous our bodies really work helped me understand why it is important to eating right. The one assignment that affected me the most was the dehydration one. I am not much of a drinker, and I usually do not drink unless I am thirsty. After doing this assignment I realized how dehydrated I really was. I did have some problems, urinating was less frequent and when I did go it was a little dark. Headaches a lot and my joints would ache. Since that assignment and reading about what can happen, I am starting to drink more and feeling better. My skin is looking better because my cells are no longer becoming dehydrated.

Reflections on Nutrition

...Reflections on Nutrition YOUR NAME INSTITUTION Reflections on Nutrition This class helped me realize that one of the major keys to health and happiness is healthy nutrition and exercise. All assignments played an important role in convincing me to start implementing a balanced nutritional plan in order to maintain a healthy weight. Starting with the first assignment “Healthy Eating Plan”, I learned that appropriate nutrition not only guides me to a learned dedication, but it also leads to a lifetime practice on the way to a healthy extensive life. After submitting the assignment I was aware that proper nutrition can be achieved only through consuming all necessary nutrients in different amounts and that some nutrients are more important than others. For example, protein broken down to amino acids serves as unifying enzymes, antibodies, vitamins, and hormones; carbohydrates including fiber is the energy supplier to the body which in turn spreads it to the brain, central nervous system, and red blood cells; fibers’ function is to prevent diseases such as coronary heart disease and diabetes; fats also supply energy and increase the body absorbance of vitamins. The recommendations gathered from MyFoodPyramid has been a guide in balancing my individual nutritional needs with physical activity and allowed developing a plan that maintains a healthy weight and prevents disease appearing. The assignment on Dehydration...

Reflections on Nutrition

...Throughout the class I have learned many things about nutrition that I did not know about my own health. The assignments on the diet analysis, obesity, and healthy eating plan helped me learn the most about my nutrition and what I can do to improve it. The assignment that I enjoyed the most was the three-day diet analysis for both week one and week six. These assignments helped me see what I was consuming too much of and what I was not consuming enough of. I found out that I was consuming too much of the mineral sodium, which in my family leads to high blood pressure. I also found out that I am not consuming near enough fruits and vegetables. Both weeks I was hardly eating any fruit at all. Since I have been consuming more fruits and vegetables I find that I am less hungry throughout the day. The discussion question topic that interested me the most was the second discussion question in week six about obesity. We had to visit the American Obesity Awareness website and answer the question of what we learned about obesity from that site that we did not know before. I was completely unaware that obesity can cause cancer. I was amazed at that fact. I was also amazed of the fact that 200 million Americans are either considered obese or overweight, that is a lot of people. The assignment that affected me the most in terms of overall health and nutrition was the healthy eating plan assignment from week one. This assignment helped me see what foods I was missing from my diet and...

Reflections on Nutrition Sci 241 Week9

...Reflections on Nutrition SCI/241 4/4/2011 Summer Groff Week 9 Checkpoint Reflecting on what I have studied so far on nutrition, using my assignments completed up until this point is that I have come to the knowledge of how the human body works from the moment food enters the mouth through digestion and coming out as waste. I have also obtained knowledge about how the body changes through aging, and how diet and exercise can actually help the body’s digestion and growth process. I have learned through doing research throughout my course on nutrition, which has helped me gained understanding on what to do to stay healthy as I age. The assignment that I enjoyed throughout this class is the three day activity analysis. After completing the analysis I became aware of what I was eating and made me aware that food is the body’s main source of fuel, which means that nutrients in food gives the body cells energy to function. I am now cautious and made changes of what I eat. Making healthy decisions and adding daily exercise to my life style has improved my health. Another assignment I enjoyed was week 5 on dehydration. I learned much about the importance of water and how the body needs water to function adequately. Water washes away and cleanse out toxins, it also assists the cell functioning, and is the primary aid of the ear, nose and throat functioning. Water also bathes the cells in the body and serves as a lubricant; it cleanses both external and internal surface...

Chemistry Portfolio

...Elizabeth Johnson CH 203 Essentials of Organic and Biochemistry Nutritional and Exercise Portfolio October 30, 2015 Section 1. Introduction Nutrition and exercise is very important in everyone’s everyday life. Nutrition and exercise have an impact on a persons overall health. It is important to watch calorie intake as well as the expenditure. Other variables such as age, gender, and genetics have a major role in ones health as well. Part A. Family History On my mothers side there is history of diabetes, and my great grandpa just died recently from it. He did not address his medical problems right away and did not take care of it when it was in full effect. So this being in my family background has an affect on me for sure. My grandmother on my mother’s side has been a smoker for around thirty years now. She hasn’t had any major medical issues because of it. She is a farmer so she is always keeping busy and staying active with driving the tractors and keeping up with the animals. She has always cooked healthy meals, but likes to snack. My uncle on my mother’s side is very healthy and active. He goes to a cross fit gym everyday and runs marathons often. He doesn’t like to say he diets, because it is a way of living. My mother has also been a smoker for as long as I can remember. For most of my life I lived with my mom, and we did a lot of eating out. She never encouraged me to eat healthy or keep active in school sports. My grandmother on my father’s side...

...Capstone: reflections on Nutrition Michelle A. Lilley SCI/241 May 25, 2011 Mike Esposito Capstone: reflections on Nutrition This class has been very enlightening for me and I have truly enjoyed it, but I think that the assignment I liked most was the human digestion system in week two. This was very interesting to me to see exactly how this process works and all the different areas that we have that work as one for the digestion process to occur. I did try a new diet plan that USDA Food Guide Pyramid suggested and ate more different kinds of foods that were recommended out of my normal routine. I felt that it just was not for me. Although I did start eating more dark green vegetables and other types of vegetables that I normally would not eat because of the type of diet lifestyle I was on, and I feel it has made me feel better about myself that I am getting the nutrients that I need to be healthy. I started this in the week one assignment: Fundamentals of health and diet. This lesson also taught me the importance that introducing the different kinds of vegetables and foods to my diet was more healthful to me. I also learned this in week five: The impact of water, Vitamins and Minerals. I feel this week was the most useful to me and helped me understand the importance of water in our diets and the importance of vitamins and minerals to keep us healthy. Overall I truly enjoyed everything I learned in this class and hope to use all the tools for the rest...

Science

...Checkpoint: Reflections on Nutrition As I reflect on what I have learned about science nutrition, using the assignments that I have completed up to this point as a reference I would say that now I understand how the body transforms everything from cheeseburgers to vegetables into energy that we can use and need to operate daily functions of the body. I have also learned how changes such as aging, illnesses, and exercise can affect the body’s digestion process and growth process. The chapter in the textbook has introduced me to the latest research and the benefits and possible dangers of antioxidants. The assignment: Healthy Eating Plan Comparison and the assignment: Three Day Activity Analysis has influenced me to become more aware than ever that food is my body's main fuel source. Which means the nutrients in food gives my body's cells the energy and other substances it needs to operate that is why I need to be very mindful as to what I put in my body. I understand the digestion process and why it such a vital part the body. The digestion process breaks down the nutrients into the simplest forms so the body can metabolize the necessary vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, sugars. I think without digestion the body could not use the food in the form it is ingested. I am now very conscious of the common digestive problems and ways to alleviate them. If I had to choose one assignment that I enjoyed the most it would be the Checkpoint: Nutrition Needs Presentation...

Community Health Nursing Reflection

...Community Health Nursing Reflection NUR/405 August 7, 2012 Community Health Nursing Reflection According to Phyllis Meadows (2009), “Community health nurses are valued for their adaptability and willingness to provide care in many settings, including community health clinics, churches, homeless shelters, and schools,” (p. 19). Community health nurses aim to improve health outcomes and improve the infrastructure used to monitor and manage disease within the community. Healthy People 2020 has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time to improve health outcomes. Each community has unique needs and the role of the community health nurse is to work with and provide comprehensive care to patients within the community. This reflection addresses the role of the community health nurse with the participating family and their community in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. Community health nurses working in the Spring Mills, PA are faced with numerous challenges in this small rural community. Construction and manufacturing account for 42% of the industry of Spring Mills. With these professions comes increased risk of work related injuries and illnesses. Educational services account for only 3% of the industry, wholesale and retail trade account for 10%, accommodation and food services 15%, and 30% account for a combination of professional, scientific, and technical services. Community health nurses play a role in ensuring safety in the workplace by creating and implementing...

Food Safety

...health and nutrition problems. By law, manufacturers must abide by the standard code terms of what is put on their food label. By this, a food label must have no false claims or information, be in English and legible and easy to see. Also must contain a barcode, name of food, list of ingredients in descending order of weight, net weight, any additives in the food, country of origin, use of imported ingredients, name and address of manufacturer, date marking and nutrition panel if any claims are made. New guidelines for food packaging should insist that products containing GMO’s be labeled as such, and that all chemical additives be listed according to their exact name, not under the umbrella of “natural and artificial flavors.” Genetically engineered plants, and corn in particular, have demonstrated an ability to reduce biodiversity by contaminating nearby non-GMO fields and breeding in GM suicide genes. Although not perfect, this mutual coercion would prevent the few (shareholders of food companies) from taking advantage. Many of us are unaware of how we are treating nature by purchasing the food that we buy. When a shopper goes to purchase eggs, for instance, there are conventional varieties, vegetarian-fed, free-range, cage-free, organic, biodynamic, and humane certified. Most people who can afford to do so, want to purchase the best quality eggs but are confounded by the differences between these many labels. Perhaps our factory farms are a reflection of our factory...

Why Is Childhood Obesity Important To Me

...As plenty of us know, times have changed drastically. From the clothes, music, food, even the way we now parent children. We have learned that our behaviors, and likes and dislikes affect the way we parent our children. A major change that has occurred over time is child obesity, but not for the better. Have you ever sat back, took a good look around and realized how childhood obesity is becoming widely acceptable? Perhaps parents do not have the skills to implement positive change. In this case, the increase of childhood obesity is a blaring reflection of poor nutrition, lack of parenting, and changes in social skills. Being healthy begins with great nutrition. However, many children are running to fast food and junk rather than the healthier alternative, a home cooked meal or a healthy snack like fruits or vegetables. Most of the food that kids are eating are full of carbs, fats, and sugar. Nutrition plays a vital role to ensure that we get the proper...

Community Health Nursing Reflection

...Community Health Nursing Reflection NUR/405 Cynthia Januale Community Health Nursing Reflection This assignment was very interesting and unique compared to other assignments that I have had in the past. Visiting and studying the community that I chose gave me quite the insight on various issues that, had it not been for this assignment, I may not have picked up on before. “In any setting, the role of public health nurses focuses on the prevention of illness, injury or disability, the promotion of health, and maintenance of the health of population” (The Role Of Public Health Nurses, 2012, para. 2). In the community I chose to survey, as with any community, the role of community nursing focuses on the items listed above and in addition, I believe that because of the lower to middle income level of this community, focus should also be on better health care accessibility to the residents. Community Nursing Diagnosis’ and Interventions Three possible community nursing diagnoses for the community that I observed were as follows. Risk for accidents related to the poor vision by oncoming traffic as evidenced by the multiple cars lining the streets. Children and others are walking to and from the store and through the neighborhood to the park where they play and oncoming traffic may have difficulty seeing pedestrians because of the amount of cars parked on the side of the road. Possible interventions for this problem include wearing reflective clothing so that they...

...Jake Thurston Jordan Dolson EDPS Reflection I thought it was very interesting when Katie came and talked to us last week. It was sort of a change of pace for us as everything we had talked about had been geared towards careers and majors. But her talking about nutrition and the need to stay healthy was, in my opinion, just as important as all of the other stuff we have talked about. When you are healthy and feeling good, it makes everything in your life better including your job. When she told us how our plates should be arranged and how much of each food group we should have on the plate was very interesting. I didn’t realize that you would need to eat that much fruit and vegetables compared to the other groups. I thought it would be about a fourth together, but it was actually closer to half the plate of vegetables and fruit. Another cool thing she talked about was how to eat healthy in the dining courts. That is a very big issue because it is buffet style and when you see that fresh tray of cookies coming out it can be very tempting to eat about five of them. The step where she said you should rethink your drink was pretty good, because since I’ve been here I haven’t drunk any pop or carbonated drinks, pretty much only water, and I can definitely tell a difference. I feel so much better and not as lethargic as I used to. The last topic she hit on might be one of the biggest factors for the dreaded freshman fifteen, the mini fridge. She said that it should be...

Community Health Reflection

...Community Health Nursing Reflection Veronica Hubbard NUR/405 June 25, 2012 Cindy Januale Community Health Nursing Reflection Community health nursing is a specialty field of nursing which care is provided to people in the community setting. A community health nurse can provide care to children and the adult population. As a result of the economic depression, more people in the community are becoming jobless, homeless, low-income, and uninsured. So the need for community health nurses has drastically increased. The child community health nurses’ role is concentrating on health promotion and prevention strategies. According to Contemporary Nurse Journal (2011), “the role is broaden to include multifaceted case management, home visiting, outreach programs, early identification and primary intervention of clients with psychosocial and mental health issues, group facilitation, the traditional one to one client contact and multidisciplinary team function (p. 72). The role for a community nurse in the adult setting is to prevent health problems in at risk individuals, promote disease prevention strategies, to provide care and available resources to needy individuals and families in the community. According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2012), “community health nursing practice is the synthesis of nursing theory and public health theory applied to promoting, preserving, and maintaining the health of populations through the delivery of personal health care services to individuals...

Evidence Based Practice

...encompass decision making within nursing practice. Cullum et al (2007) identifies four requirements:-Clinical experience, valid researched evidence, available resources and lastly but no less important the patient preferences and experiences. The area of clinical practice to be studied is within a community district nursing team consisting of 7 qualified nurses and 3 health care assistants. The location is situated within a seaside town with a large population of over 65 year olds. Through clinical experience, the author has found a flaw in quality of care when nursing staff are using the overview assessment document which has been adapted from the single assessment process produced by the Department of Health (DOH, 2002). When assessing nutrition there is a series of six questions and an asterisk to consider the “Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool” (MUST, 2003) however experience in practice would suggest the tool (MUST, 2003) isn't used and a local unknown screening tool is used on some rare occasions. The author feels management of these vulnerable patients is lacking and in order to improve patient care a clarification of guidance and service change maybe required. Exploring Cullum's (2007) theory of decision making, the author needs to justify the service change with valid researched evidence. As a nurse in practice it can be...
