Dan Elder Journal Reflections The flight to from Cedar Rapids to Chicago took me back to the many times I have flown from cedar rapids to embark on my many vacations I have had with my family. But it was different because I was not going with my parents I was going with a few friends and tons of new people I had not met yet. When I got to Chicago I got a better chance of meeting everyone and I knew I was going to be making some new friends right away. The flight to London was like nothing I have never done before because I have never had to fly for that long before and since I could not fall asleep it was a very long flight indeed. The in-flight dinners were a lot better than I thought they would be I was expecting something way worse and they actually were not bad at all to eat I was pleasantly surprised. The airport at Heathrow was really big and it was a surprise to me that we were driving on the left side of the road even though I knew they did that in England it still came as a surprise to actually see it in action. The second flight went by very quickly for me because I was so excited to get to Denmark. Some of the first things that I noticed when I got Denmark that was different were all the biking and walking everyone does. Also the fact that everything is more expensive in Europe as compared to the United States it came as a real shock to me but I should have realized that with all the taxes they have that it has to be. The McDonalds in Europe was also a surprise the food was less greasy to say the least and since I hate greasy fast food I actually thought it wasn’t half bad compared to the food in America. But also the price again shocked me. But overall it was a great beginning to the trip. Day 2 Orientation to the program went by very fast for me because I was so excited to get the trip on the road I was also a little tired from the trip. But I had high expectations walking down to the train I never expected it to be so far. I am not what you would call a lazy person but it shocked me how much walking and biking people in Denmark actually do as compared to people in the United States. It makes you realize just how dependent we are on are cars to get us everywhere. In Denmark you don’t need a car since you can get anywhere just by walking to the train station or the bus station and it will take you were you want. Carlsberg was founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobson the company quickly grew and started exporting beer around the world. The company kept growing until there was a fight between the father and son and they split up and formed two different companies. The two companies came back together in 1970 and became one of the world’s largest breweries. It is today the 4thlargest brewery in the world and is primarily in Europe and in Asia it does very little trade into America. Carlsberg has to market different in some ways to every place it sells its beers because of the wide range of cultures and languages it must adapt to in order to sell it product effectively. Carlsberg also isn’t as cocky as most beer companies in the United States are since they don’t boast that they are the best in the worlds they just calmly say probably the best beer in the world. Carlsberg also in some ways seems to be set in their ways since they refuse pretty much to try and get into the American market since they deem it to be practically impossible to break into the market. The brewery was a lot of fun to walk around in and I learned a lot while walking around about the company and also how the beer is made. It was also very fun to get to try out the beer at the end of the tour since it was a well needed refreshment. Day 3 The Danish design study was a very good time I was very surprised by their hospitality and how many refreshments they gave us the strawberries were just amazing to say the least. The host herself was the owner of the company and what really surprised me was the fact that she went to Harvard and yet she didn’t seem the type I am not saying she wasn’t smart but the fact that she didn’t boast about it are anything like that that a normal American would do. What the design company basically did was to take a companies product and basically design around that product and to make it better and more marketable. They were proud of how they did and that worked with such companies as royal Copenhagen and Pepsi . The main thing which I came to see was the fact of how they had to market differently in Europe because basically they had to at pretty much all times keep the product in front of their consumer. Because they need to make the customer feel like the company cared and wanted to be there to help them out. That’s why everywhere you look in Denmark there is advertisements for all kinds of products everywhere you look. The time spent at the Danish design study was certainly eye opening into how much they really are very humble compared to everyone in America it is differently more of a we culture then a me culture then it is in America. The Danish design museum was a little bit of a disappoint for me but I have never really been that interested in the design of chairs I must say and I learned more about chairs then I will ever need to know. What was fun and exciting to see was the royal palace which was very beautiful to see and was just amazing for the sheer size of it. It was overall a great day in which I learned many things about different cultures and different ways of looking at things from another cultures view. It makes me realize how much there is to learn in this world and how much more there is for me to learn in order to make myself a better person. Day 4 It was very interesting to learn how the rock festival was able to manage the 25,000 volunteers they use to run the event. Because that truly is a huge amount of people to have to manage for an 8 day event every year considering the fact that you can’t be sure about all of them and whether they will actually show and do the work. Also the fact that there are only 25 full time employs that run the event all year long and that they have 400 volunteer managers is just crazy that they can pull of what they do because 400 people to manage 25,000 people that does not seem to be enough but the fact is that it is and they get it done. It was also interesting to learn how the festival has grown through the years and also learn how the money goes to a good cause. Ikea markets products that are well made and well designed at low prices and they market to everyone around the worlds making a world a brand that is known around the world. They try to make products that help improve the everyday life of their customers and make there shopping experience an all day event. Tivoli was a entirely different amusement park then what I am use to in America yes it had all the rides like roller coaster and things like that but it just seemed to be more sophtiscated then the new amusement parks in America. It also at the same time looked to be a lot more fun than the amusement park in America since they have a thing for every age group in the park it caters to everyone. There Friday night concert drew in thousands and it looked like an amazing idea I think they could maybe expand on it by offering more of a variety because looking at the lineup it didn’t seem like they had much of one. Also the fact that your price of admission doesn’t include the rides seemed really weird to me since if you go to an amusement park in America if you pay to get in you get to ride the rides are included. I think that Tavoli has pretty much everything they could want the only thing I could see them adding would be something on the lines of a water ride which would be perfect for hot days but since they don’t have much space I cant seem them doing it.

...experience of learning from reflection on giving intramuscular (IM) injections, using Gibbs's (1988) reflective model. I demonstrate how practice anxiety, as a student nurse, can be dealt with through effective mentoring. I chose the seminal theory of Gibbs reflection on practice, as it illustrates six significant stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis of the incident, conclusion and an action plan Ghaye and Lillyman (1997). Gibbs cycle is used throughout the process of reflecting on the incident to help me make sense of my practice and understand what l could do differently to enhance good practice. I use my experience from a placement simulation as I could not be on actual placement due to unforeseen circumstances. Reflection is a process through which healthcare practitioners and students can learn from experience and use the knowledge to inform and improve practice Schon, (1983). The ability to reflect on one's actions is particularly imperative in clinical practice and discourse. As Jarvis (1992) asserted, there is no consensus on the definition of reflection as it is a broad concept. Reid (1993, p305.) define reflection as; “a course of action reviewing an occurrence of practice to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice” Schon (1983) identified two types of reflection which are; reflection in action, which takes place during the event where the practitioner may not be aware that it is happening and reflection on action, which takes place...

...and its impact on me and other colleagues. Using Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle I will identify the situation in which the issue arose, the thoughts and feelings it evoked, an evaluation of positive and negative aspects experienced. I will analyse the situation in order to reach a conclusion and to formulate an action plan. To preserve patient and staff confidentiality no one will be named. I believe Gibbs model of reflection to be a framework with which I can address an issue from the workplace as I find it easy to utilise and believe it supports my reflective learning style as a pragmatist. Cottrell (2008). This approach to learning advocates Ryle (1949) where thoughts and feelings impact directly on the way we behave. This way of thinking suits me personally as I trained as a Cognitive Behavioural Counsellor and believe I take a rational and cognitive approach to problems. Neenan and Dryden (2004). Consequently I believe it to be a model or framework with which I can use as I develop as an Assistant Practitioner. The incident I am using for reflection for this essay involves an 87 year old lady that had suffered a pre-tibia laceration and attended the minor injuries department of Accident and Emergency. Following examination by a Nurse Practitioner I was asked to treat the injury. I cleaned the wound aseptically removing the developing Haematoma from under the skin flap and occluded using steri-strips. A Mepitel non- adhesive dressing was then applied. I secured the...

...boundaries and leads to better communication and therefore a better outcome for the patient. (Pullen & Mathias, 2010) Being able to reflect upon situations is vital in the role of the nurse. Being able to examine personal thoughts and perceptions enables the nurse to have greater self awareness and build upon strengths and develop personal and professional competencies. (Somerville, D. et al 2004) Reflection has been described as being able to think about a situation, make sense of it and ultimately learn from it. (Clarke and Graham 1996) Taking a period of time to reflect and review a situation allows a person to move on and through the learning experience, become a better practitioner (Bulman et al 2012) By being able to reflect and ask myself what would I do differently or could my practice have been better will only help to develop my skills and knowledge and influence my future as a practitioner in a positive way. Having looked at several reflective models of learning, such as Gibbs (1988), Driscoll (2000) and Dewey, I have decided to use the Kolb (1984) model of reflection throughout this assignment. Kolb's (1984) experiential theory of learning has four distinct stages of a cycle. This incorporates an actual learning experience; being involved in a situation, then observing someone one else in that situation, reflecting upon...

Reflection

...1 Reflection Reflection is an everyday process. We reflect on a range of everyday problems and situations all the time: What went well? What didn’t? Why? How do I feel about it? We don’t usually follow a formula for this, it just happens as feelings, thoughts and emotions about something gradually ‘surface’. We might choose to do something differently, or not, as a result of reflecting, but reflection is essentially a kind of loose processing of thoughts and feelings about an incident, a meeting, a day – any event or experience at all. Reflection can be a more structured way of processing in order to deal with a problem. This type of reflection may take place when we have had time to stand back from something, or talk it through, as in: ‘On reflection, I think you might be right’, or ‘On second thoughts, I realised he was more upset than me.’ Structured reflection If we consciously reflect, maybe as part of our work or family role, there tends to be a rough process of ‘How did it go? What went well? Why? What didn’t? Why? What next?’ Examples might be of a football coach reflecting after a match, a teacher reflecting on a lesson, or simply a parent thinking about how best to deal with a teenager. In this kind of reflection, the aim is to look carefully at what happened, sort out what is really going on and explore in depth, in order to improve, or change something for next time. This brief guide will look at what is meant by reflection, suggest forms of structured...

...of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as a guide: The names of the patient, staff members and health care setting will be changed to protect...

Reflection of Techniques

...RA3 – Reflection of techniques Barometer of confidence +Using a scale system helped me identify what current level I felt I was. +Open questioning for the analysis of current level enabled me to explain why I felt I was at the current level stated and give examples to reinforce the level indicated. -The scale system though is relatively vague in regards to numbers and their value. It is through interpretation of their value in regards to how confident you are rather than a systematic and calculated approach. This means the level you suggest you are currently achieving could be over or under the realistic level. -Answering is subjective and could have an element of bias. There are no set criteria to base the level and descriptive answering on. Learning Styles Questionnaire +Questions asked reinforce a particular learning style when answers are collated, to make the claim to be stronger in a particular learning style more valid. +Questions can be related to the careers work that I do and therefore indicate the learning styles I tend to use in appointments. -Questions can be interpreted in a variety of situations, so the answers given may not truly reflect the learning styles being used. -Final scoring of answers given doesn’t indicate the scale of which a learning style is used. It is only an indication and further analysis would need to be used to definitively suggest the learning styles more suited to an individual. My results are fairly even and don’t indicate...

Personal Reflection

...Date: 27th October, 2014 Title: Morrisons breaks pledge on low prices Link: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Retail_and_leisure/article1475669.ece The ethical issue was related to credibility of a company. It was about Morrisons the supermarket increased prices of some products marked with “I’m cheaper” sign after promising to cut prices permanently on over 1000 goods six months ago. The supermarket claimed the rise in prices was only a reflection of “commodity inflation” and still “lower than they would have been” without the “I’m Cheaper”cuts. No doubt by increasing the price of goods, the supermarket could compensate the losses from the inflation in supply costs. This do help to maintain profitability of the supermarket and strengthen the confidence of its investors. Also, even though the prices had been raised, they were still lower than the general prices of these goods. The promise of enduring price cut was kept. It was a win-win situation in the eyes of Morrisons. One of the problems arose in this issue was the reputation of Morrisons towards the customers was deeply affected. Although action of increasing the prices due to inflation was justifiable, Morrisons still broke part of its vow of long-lasting price cut. A credibility gap between Morrisons and customers might have been develop as a result. Moreover, the intention of the supermarket was to maintain its profitability while the issue of the news had leaded to a fall in its share price of 0.46...

Reflection and Refraction

...Refraction and Reflection People often wonder why it is that when looking at fish in an aquarium, the fish seems to suddenly change to a different position as we look at them from different viewpoints. What makes Diamonds seem to sparkle so much, or even when a straw is inserted into a glass it looks tilted or at an angle. All of these questions has the same answer and are all examples of Refraction, Refraction is the change in direction of light as it changes speeds passing from one material into another, it slows down when light enters a denser material, and is also the key component in fiber-optic transmissions. Although reflection and refraction are often construed as one in the same they are however different. Reflection tends to occur when light bounces off of an object. But the amount of reflection often depends on how even the surface is. Meaning if a surface is smooth or even flat (specular) it will bounce off at equal angles; like when you look in the mirror at the reflection of yourself, or in a clam body of water. Or perhaps if the surface is rough (diffuse) the light will however scatter into different directions, like off of clothing or paper. Or for instance this is why the “setting sun” my have a reddish tint and why the sky is blue. Degradation could be defined as the ratio of optical output power to the input power in the fiber of length. Some factors that can cause degradation of signal strength in fiber-optic transmission are absorption (intrinsic...

Personal Reflection

...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...

Reading Reflections

...Reading Reflection 1 Reading Reflection Holly Schultz Eng 125 Sherita Smedley November 3, 2014 Reading Reflection 2 From the two pieces of work that were presented were The Story of a Hour by Kate Chopin and The Welcoming Table by Alice Walker. The piece of work that is going to be discussed is The Welcoming Table by Alice Walker. This piece of literature captured my interest to a personal level. The piece of literature kind of hits home with what I see and how I feel that the woman that was presented in the literature was treated by the other people. The key terms that are going to be use to describe this literature piece will be tone, symbol, and figurative language. The main reason that this literature work captured my interest is because I can place myself in her shoes. I have been in positions and also have been in places that people did not want me there, or that I did not feel welcome in their circle. There was one incident that I remember; I was trying to find a church that could feel comfortable going to, some place that I can look for answers if I had questions. I believe that is what the little old woman was doing in the literature work in The Welcoming Table. It seems like the woman wanted to do was pray and be able to speak to Jesus in his own house. The people of the church did not want her to be there because she was not wearing the right clothes, and she was not like them, that is what I got from the reading. The people that were in the church were not happy...

...Unit 9 Reflection Christy Gatlin CM107 Unit 9 Reflections For this assignment I have been instructed to reflect back to the unit two assignment and unit three journal entry. In the unit two assignment we were asked to discuss our goals for college composition 1. Looking back at the goals I set for myself I do believe that I have achieved my goals. My goals were to learn how to correctly write an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. This course has helped me reach those goals. Strategies I used to achieve those goals was doing research, using the reading material given to us through the Kaplan Library and studying. Without the reading material and the professor being so helpful I don’t think I could have achieved the goals I had set for myself. I am most proud of myself for learning how to write a thesis statement and why it is important. I never really knew how to start a paper correctly. Having an effective thesis in your introductory paragraph is very important. It can make your break paper. The thesis is a statement that tells what your paper is about and why. The project I just completed has taught me a lot. It has taught me to be more comfortable with my own writing skills. It has also taught me that I still need to work on citation and giving proper credit where it is due. I understand why we do citations but I just still need to work on it. I will have to use this in other classes for papers. I think now is a time to set another goal for myself...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...
