Ssk12 Assisgnment

...Two reflective entries Reflective entry 1: New Beginnings Deciding to attend university as a mature age student was a decision I did not take lightly. I am working towards furthering my education in order to gain the necessary qualifications that will help me in my future business endeavour. I have found that after so long out of the education system it has been a difficult transition juggling study and work. The first units that were chosen for me in study period 2, I thought were difficult to understand having never written an essay before and without the knowledge or know how, I was not able to complete these units. SSK12 has given me a good understanding of what it takes at becoming a university student and in particular the skills on writing essays. As I have mentioned previously up until study period 2, I had never written an essay and did not fully comprehend how important the set out of a university essay was. Choosing an Essay Question was an important part of my learning in week 6 because this has now given me the beginning step in writing a university essay using the correct format. I am feeling a lot more confident when approaching the subject of essays as I now understand and have the knowledge on the procedure in completing an academic essay and what is required. I now know that by firstly choosing a question will then help you to with your thesis and this in turn will give you your main idea and sets the way in which to write your essay. ...

Reflective Practice

...Reflective practice is an approach widely adopted by professionals in evaluating their practice, particularly in nursing and health care (Kenworthy et al 2002). Reflection is a necessary process in order to comply with Post-registration education and practice (PREP), continuing professional development standard, as required by the NMC (2006). Reflection can therefore be regarded as a fundamental process for all professionals registered within the NMC. This essay specifically focuses upon reflection in relation to the student Specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN). Reflective practice in nursing can be guided by models of reflection. Using a model or framework can be beneficial in aiding practioners and students of nursing and health care to, reflect upon incidents, and critically analyse those incidents, therefore helping the practioner to learn and move on (Ashby 2006). This essay aims to explore the concept of reflection. It will discuss and critically analyse Gibbs (1998) theoretical model of reflection whilst also considering other models and their use in relation to the role of a student SCPHN working within a children and family community setting. Reflective practice is not a new concept. It originated in the 1930's from work carried out by American educationalist John Dewey. Dewey (1933) developed the idea of reflection as a way of learning in education. This idea has since been drawn upon in the works of many others; Schon (1983) similarly highlights the...

Critical Thinking Essay

...Essay Using relevant SSK19 readings, in particular the four dimensions of reflective practice presented in Pavlovich (2007, 283), discuss the fundamental role that critical thinking plays in evaluating arguments at university. Most of us would believe that we make good decisions; but most of us find it uncommon practise to use the tool of critical thinking to enhance our thinking process which enables us to make better decisions. This essay with provide examples of critical thinking when evaluating arguments by using the different dimensional levels of reflective processes. Critical thinking in evaluating arguments is stated as an essential skill for student at university level, but can only be used to its best when it grouped with the tool of reflection. Most do believe, reflection and critical thinking go hand in hand as a process, just like a personal experience cannot be truly acknowledged within if you don’t ask the question, analyse, understand or action. The fundamental role that critical thinking plays in university arguments is that it allows the student to analyse, evaluate and draw conclusion by using their own mind and not be persuaded by other external or biased opinions. Pavlovich’s reading “The development of reflective practise through student journals” (Pavlovich 2007) refers to the four dimensional levels that she believes is the summary of reflective practise. The four dimensions of reflective method are, describing the experience, analysis of the experience...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

The Role of the Student Nurse in Higher Education

...A student in Higher Education and a Future Healthcare Practitioner. In this essay I will explore my initial reflections on my role as a student in higher education. There will a discussion on my role as a future healthcare practitioner and the efforts I need to make to achieve the professional status of a nurse. I will discuss my learning styles and identify key developmental needs to be addressed. There will be discussions on the concepts of professionalism and accountability. In the United Kingdom today all newly qualified nurses must have a nursing degree as required by The Nursing and Midwifery Council. This significant overhaul to Florence Nightingale’s eighteenth century era, apprenticeship style learning system (Bradshaw, A. 2001), has led to fundamental changes in nursing education in the twenty first century; both in theory and practice. Today nurses are challenged with up-to date demands, including innovative medical treatments, leading to an aging population, with complex health values (Cherry, B. 2005). In addition, knowledgeable patients, who are averse to being told what to do but expect greater involvement in their own care planning. The need for graduate nurses is supported by the Willis Commission Report (2012) which argues that ‘our future healthcare services will require graduate nurses nursing and leading healthcare teams in a variety of roles, providing care in many settings’. The concept of accountability and professionalism was highlighted at the...

There are areas for improvement in the piece (e.g. carrying through with the author's initially posed question; focusing more critically on Bodi's argument and/or her responses to this author's comments), however, it is offered as a formidable example of how to initially tackle a critically reflective piece by focusing on only one point, argument, (or in this case, sentence). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I found the article written by Sonia Bodi was very informative and interesting. Although many of the ideas she presented I agreed with, there were also a few points that I'd like to argue against. First I would like to answer the question that was proposed in the title of this article: How do we bridge the gap between what we ( professors) teach and what they ( students) do? To fill in that gap, both sides need to work together. Students need to push themselves to expand their knowledge and help themselves become more inquisitive, critical, and reflective. Professors, on the other hand, should push and...

Critically Evaluating Reflective Practice

...[pic] Reflective Practice EDU 2071-N Critically Evaluating Reflective Practice. Leigh William Adams. M1106275 D.O.S: 10/12/2015 Word count: 2000 Introduction. This essay will look at the use of reflective practice in a vocational construction setting, it will look at various practitioners’ theories and how they may be implemented into the current strategy. Reflective practice can be an essential tool in vocational based professional learning settings where people learn from their own experiences, rather than from formal learning or knowledge transfer. It may be the most important source of personal professional development and improvement. It is also an important way to bring together theory and practice; through reflection a person is able to see and label forms of thought and theory within the milieu of their work. The essay will also look at the use of reflective practice with learners at a behavioural school. Each section will cover different topics, section one will cover the understanding of critical reflection, section two will show how critical reflection is used for behaviour, section three shows its use in the construction industry and section four will briefly cover other authors and their respective models. Section 1. “Identify and Discuss the Skills and Strategies Needed for Effective Learning”

...strategies needed for effective learning” Word Count: 858 Effective learning involves students learning a broad range of core skills and strategies that can be learnt and developed throughout the Higher Education (HE) life span. Throughout this essay discussion will explore the core tasks and strategies of effective learning, including the importance of “self” within the context of learning, the academic skills required and the scholarly expertise required to understand, research and produce academic essays or reports. Finally, a summary of the approach to effective learning will be detailed within the conclusion Studying at HE differs from other types of studying as students are expected to manage and their learning. Cottrell (2013, p. 10) reaffirms this, stating “that in HE, success lies largely in your own hands.” Generic literature (Payne and Whittaker, 2006; Price and Maier, 2006; Moore et al, 2010; Burns and Sinfield, 2012; McMillan and Weyers, 2012; Bedford and Wilson, 2013; Cottrell, 2013) is published on study skills and provides broad based overviews (skills, tasks and strategies) of the prerequisites required for learning at HE level. More task focused texts Godfrey (2011) on writing for university, Godwin (2014) on writing an essay, Cottrell (2011) on critical thinking, McMillan and Weyers (2012) on referencing and plagiarism and Williams et al. (2012) on reflective writing run parallel to the generic texts. Both these lists are in no way exhaustive but provide...
