Caroline Regis at Excel Systems

The case describes the effects of a proposed change in Excel's manufacturing strategy as seen through the eyes of the company's VP of Manufacturing, Caroline Regis. Regis’ employer, Excel Systems, merged with another company Gemini, a former competitor. The merger was followed by several changes to Excel's and Gemini’s old business approach.
Excel System’s new CEO advocates a new manufacturing strategy: outsourcing, which he successfully ran with Gemini prior to the merger. Regis, who was in charge of in-house manufacturing at Excel Systems, feels threatened by the VP for Supply Chain Management at Gemini, Margaret Ogilvie, and her proposed changes. The case focuses on Regis's reactions to the outsourcing proposal and her actions to clarify her new role at Excel Systems.
Initially, Regis seems to consent to the new organizational politics and support the new outsourcing strategy as well, only to change her mind at the last minute and exasperate her superiors, who had all thought she would support the plan. She attempts to regain control of the situation and threatens to resign if she would not be allowed to determine the appropriate strategy for the newly merged entity. The case further analyses and discusses the career and personal development issues that lead up to Regis’ determination to either be in charge of manufacturing at Excel Systems, or resign and move on to another company.
The case describes Caroline Regis as an independent, original, analytical, and determined person. She possesses an exceptional ability to turn theories into solid plans of action. After working for an investment company for several years she decided to go back to graduate school and further develop her skills. Upon graduation, Regis decided that the financial industry would not be the perfect fit for her future career path. Instead, Regis

Remarkable Creatures Essay

...The Remarkable Tale of Mary Anning: An Analysis of Remarkable Creatures and its Merit as Historical Fiction Novels can do more that simply tell stories. Novels can enhance or emphasize thoughts and ideas. They can excite a wide variety of emotions. They can be the product of imagination, or they can be influenced by historical fact. Whether or not the events in a novel are true is left entirely up to the author, but it is truly an incredible feat to take a piece of history and turn it into a work of fiction that is plausible and logical. For our Senior Seminar, we have studied the aspects of fiction that have a basis in historical fact. They do so by applying certain literary devices that are necessary to the historical fiction genre. The novel I chose to research and present on is entitled Remarkable Creatures, by Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Last Runaway. This work of historical fiction tells the story of Mary Anning, one of the first recognized female paleontologists whose discoveries changed many views on the world and how it began. Remarkable Creatures is a biographical novel, as it concentrates on the experiences that Mary Anning had during her lifetime, the people she meets, and the incidents that occur in her life. This essay will evaluate Chevalier’s work on the basis of its merit as historical fiction. Remarkable Creatures belongs in this category because it Chevalier implements the critical terms of the genre in numerous and intricate...

Marketing Is Everything by Regis Mckenna - Reading Notes

...Strategic marketing Marketing is everything ⇨ Technology is transforming choice, and choice is transforming the marketplace - Make distinctions between technology and non technology business and industries: there are only technology companies ==> Technology has moved into products - The defining characteristic of this new technological push is programmability. ⇨ Programmability is the new corporate capability to produce more and more varieties and choices for customers = > The technological promise of programmability has exploited into the reality of almost unlimited choices. - Evaluation of marketing = The market-driven company ⇨ These companies are customer driven; they expressed a new willingness to change their product to fit customers’ requests (or customers' strategies) - It is marketing that oriendted toward creating rather than controlling a market. It is based on: • Developmental education • Incremental improvement • Ongoing process ⇨ it draws on the base of knowledge and experience that exists in the organization The old approach in Marketing: Getting an idea > Conducting traditional market research > Developing a product > Testing the market > Going to market ⇨ this approach is slow, unresponsive and turf-ridden The alternative to this old approach is knowledge-based and experience-based marketing. The two fundamentals will increasingly define the capabilities of a successful marketing organization ➢ Knowledge-based...

...9 -9 1 5 -5 1 5 MARCH 9, 2015 ANTHONY J. MAYO MICHAEL J. ROBERTS Caroline Regis at Excel Systems It was Friday, June 13, 2014, and it felt like an unlucky day for Caroline Regis. As she turned off the lights in her office and headed to the company’s parking lot, she wondered if this was her final day at Excel Systems. Regis, vice president of manufacturing, was embroiled in a controversy with some of her colleagues and superiors at Excel Systems, which had recently acquired a rival company, Gemini Systems. Gemini’s CEO, Roger Dreanan, had become CEO at Excel. Dreanan wanted Excel to adopt Gemini’s approach of outsourcing manufacturing because Gemini’s vice president for supply chain management, Margaret Ogilvie, had used this model to good effect there. Regis thought, “How could my area of responsibility just disappear, evaporate? Basically, they want to eliminate manufacturing as a function and completely outsource all our production. We’ve built out our manufacturing capability over the past few years, and we add a lot of value with this function: shorter shipping times to customers, better integration with engineering. It is just crazy.” Regis decided she needed to confront Steve Spanner, COO at Excel. She said to herself, “Either they will let me do my job or I should just leave.” Background: Excel Industries Ron Whitney was a high-profile serial entrepreneur who founded a web company that he had sold for several million dollars in 2007. He then focused on what he saw as...

Nursing

...Personal Definition of Nursing April Vialpando Ms. Penne McPherson in partial fulfillment of NR444 Professional Role Development Regis University January 22, 2013 Personal Definition of Nursing The definition of nursing has many different meanings depending on whom you ask. To some a nurse is simply the person who brings you your medication and takes your vital signs. To others, including myself, it is someone who keeps you safe and watches over you while you are in a healthcare setting. A nurse along side a physician with the patients best interest in mind to care for them not only physically but emotionally and mentally. A nurse must have the knowledge of that exact medication you are receiving. I must know the signs and symptoms of an adverse reaction and be able to inform my patients why the medication is beneficial. I must also show compassion for a sick patient or a family member who is saying good-bye to a loved one. In this paper through examples and personal experiences I hope to define what nursing means to me. Description of Terms Health “An individual’s physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being; a continuum, not a constant state” (Chitty & Black, 2011, p. 413). I believe that without all four of these components a person truly is not in a state of health. If a patient is at an ideal weight and is in a state of depression there is a lack of pure health. I had a patient recently that on the outside seemed to be “the picture of health”...

Keywords: International Marketing- Foreign Trade INTRODUCTION: International marketing is simply the application of marketing principles to more than one country. However, there is a crossover between what is commonly expressed as international marketing and global marketing, or across national borderlines. The intersection is the result of the process of internationalization. Many American and European authors see international marketing as simple extension of exporting, whereby the marketing miss is simply adapted in some way to take into account differences in consumers...

Use Of Technology In Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park

...This is seen in the novel when the park organizers didn’t think about the electrical fences capabilities if they were to fail, and realize to late when the power failed and the fences went down allowing the T-Rex’s to get out of their paddock. “The fence wasn’t electrified anymore!” (pg.205). Tim looked up and saw the tyrannosaur crashing down the cyclone fence with a giant hind limb (pg.206). With the fences going down and the T-Rex’s getting out, it posed danger to the general public. [Such as Ed Regis who had lost his life because of the dependency of technology]. He saw the T-Rex getting out and fled the cars and Tim and Lex and him ran into the woods and with doing so came in contact with the T-Rex. “Regis cowardly abandons the children and in doing so seals his own fate” (Sparknotes). This quote shows that because Regis ran away he paid the price of being killed by the raptors. In conclusion to this said example it is seen how the dependency on technology in Jurassic Park got people in dangerous and life threating...

Insight to an Unethical Situation

...Insight to an Unethical Situation Week 6- Final Project Danielle Introduction Toyota’s announcement of a technical fix for its sticky gas pedals, which can lead to sudden acceleration problems, is not likely to bring a quick end to the company’s current recall nightmare. During the course of this paper, I will explain in detail the Toyota recall in 2010 having to do with the gas petal sticking. I will also explain why I believe Toyota handled this situation from the deontological perspective and what other theories apply to the unethical situation. Description Unethical Situation In 2010, Toyota was forced to issue a series of highly-publicized recalls, due to reports of cars accelerating beyond the driver's control.  The issue led to Congressional hearings, damaged the reputation of a company once known for its bulletproof reliability, and left millions of Toyota owners with questions about their own safety. Understandably, the news was worried for Toyota consumers.  It also rocked the automotive industry, as questions about Toyota's reputation for reliability surfaced during this time. It started with a single, horrifying car crash in southern California in August 2009. In the weeks following, two separate recalls covering 7.5 million vehicles, Toyota was forced to announce it was suspending the sale of eight of its best-selling vehicles, a move that cost the company and its dealers a minimum of $54 million a day in lost sales revenue. How did a company that became...
