The grandmother attempts to talk her son and his wife into going to Tennessee instead of Florida because a man called the misfit has escaped prison. After they stop at the tower and speak with the owner, Red Sam, the grandmother remembers an old plantation that she would like to see again, and she even exaggerates about the house so her son will stop by. After having an accident on the dirt road leading to the plantation, the grandmother realizes the house is actually in Tennessee. ...It Might Have Gone Something Like This In “Queen of Knives”, Neil Gaiman exemplifies how unreliable our narrator is in dealing with death and derangement. Through this naïve narration, we are presented with a story in which the narrator; a young boy at that time, recalls how a magician vanishes his grandmother during a magic show. Upon closer analysis we will see that Gaiman actually implies that the grandmother has died causing the grandfather to go crazy from the death of his wife. In order for our narrator to cope with traumatic experience of losing a loved one and witnessing his grandfather lose his mind he blends the story with memories. The poem is set up as a flashback which further gives credibility to our narrator’s erroneous memory. My analysis will scrutinize the diction used throughout the poem as well as the crucial symbolism in order to uncover the hidden meaning behind the text. When someone reads “Queen of Knives” for the first time it is likely that they will ponder the outcome with confusion. They may also conclude that the grandfather murdered the grandmother or that she ran off with the magician. It is understandable to arrive at this conclusion when the literal meaning of the passage points to such answers, but once we examine how dynamic this piece of literature is we can conclude much deeper meanings. The short story Two Kinds is a text written with a first-person narrator. The agonist in the text is a girl named Jing-Mei. As the story moves on, we follow Jing-Mei, and how her parents, mostly her mother, have always had extremely high expectations to her. We see, that she enjoys this in the beginning: “In fact, in the beginning, I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, trying each one on for size.”(P. 107, L. 22-24). The omnipresence of the author making philosophical diagrations on different matters is a characteristic feature of the novel. The passage contains of two paragraphs, and the most part of it is the author’s phylosophical and ironic contemplation on Vanity Fair representatives’ relation to those being presented at Court and to the King himself. The figure of the King is the central one in the extract. Portaying the King, Thackeray uses the words with positive connotations: “the Good, the Magnificent, the Great”, etc. They acquire the opposite sense in the context. And this is a common feature of ironic description. Irony turns to be the key device of the passage.
