1. Background and Introduction

This report is a result of a request from the Senior Management Team at Amica Solutions. It will consider the companies recent move to remote working. Twelve staff have been moved from their office base in Newport to remote working, and are now spread across South Wales. The report is sectioned into three key themes, communication, teamworking and change management.

It was felt the existing office premises were too small for the expanding business, and that thanks to advances in technology, remote working would be a viable option. However, some staff have expressed concerns about the new way of working, and feel there was little consultation.

Remote working is becoming an increasingly popular method of working. Essentially, it is working from home, connecting with the business through the internet and telephones.

2. Communication

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to remote working, and the effects it has on communication within the organisation. Advantages for the company include savings on office costs. Disadvantages can include staff taking advantage of their freedom to do as little work as possible, or their morale decreasing being left primarily alone.

Similarly there are advantages and disadvantages for the workers themselves. Advantages can include being able to create their own work-life balance. However, a down side of that is that the staff must be self disciplined enough to carry on with their work. A key disadvantage of remote working is the lack of social contact between staff. It has to be remembered that apart from sleeping, the

Contemporary Leadership Issue: Remote Workers

...Issue: Remote Workers   Abstract “The Integral or “all-quadrant” (AQ) approach provides a method to define a problem space which is at once elegant, infinitely adaptable, and panoramic”. This Integral Theory, created by Ken Wilber (2005), is independently powerful and useful as a means to explore and describe the human territory of experience ”(Susanne R. Cook-Greuter, Fall 2005, Vol 1, No.3, pg 2). While the C.Graves Theory concluded after research that there are eight levels of existence (value systems or Memes) which are: 1) Survival; 2) Security; 3) Energy & Power; 4) Order, 5) Success; 6) Community, 7) Synergy and 8) Holistic life system. Each value system includes and transcends from previous ones, thus forming a natural hierarchy (or holarchy) (Marcel van Marrewijk & Marco Werre, September 2002). Utilizing the concepts related to the integral theory, we analyzed the emerging concept of remote workers. Through our analysis, we identified the key perspectives of co-workers, leaders, and customers. These perspectives allowed our team to full explore the concept and dive deeper into how the key stakeholders view and interact with remote workers. Integral Theory (AQAL) Upper Left Quadrant: Intentions and Consciousness At a very high level, the intention for both remote and in office worker is to work together to meet a mutual goal. That sounds good, but can get difficult quickly if not applied appropriately. From the peers’ perspective of remote workers...

Unit 3 It255 Access Control

...1. RAS server provides the most secure method for remote access to the network if it is reburied. 2. Never allow client computers on the network to answer remote access connections. 3. Organize all remote access servers in a centrally controlled location. 4. Servers have no need to originate dial-out connections (Except when using telephone lines as low cost WAN connections, but these connections should be relatively permanent). 5. To simplify security administration, allow only one method of remote access into the network. 6. Remote access control procedures must provide adequate safeguards through robust identification, authentication and encryption techniques. 7. Carefully consider the wisdom of providing cellular telephones and modems for use with laptop computers. This technology isn’t usually justified considering the relatively modest increase in productivity compared to the cost and the security risk of a lost laptop. 8. Consider using only the NetBEUI protocol for remote access to limit the extent of intrusions on the network. 9. Control the distribution of remote access software on the network. Never allow client computers to run remote control software. If remote control software is necessary, run the software from centrally controlled computers or thin-client servers. 10. Disable dial-in networking, except in the cases of trusted individuals or to special computers, because dial-in networking can bypass regular network security. ...

...joint projects, and more global work opportunities for employees on both sides. I think the first few years may be a challenge for managers but as the people gain familiarity and knowledge of processes it becomes easy to manage. Although time zone differences, cultural (communication) gaps, and limited opportunities for end-user interaction will always present challenges, working in a global setup would benefit organizations in many ways and would enable to maintain a highly competitive IT unit cost. Research suggests that 70% of remote working relationships fail due to lack of communication and unclear roles and expectations. As such, it is essential for the remote manager to develop clear communication protocols and establish individual goals. At the same time, a remote manager needs to provide effective project management support and ensure ongoing performance assessment. Yes, I do prefer face to face communication anytime over any other form of interaction. But with advent of technology more and more work is done remotely and employees too love the flexibility in their work schedule. In a remote working relationship, there are comparatively lesser opportunities for a manager to check if work is...

Drones, Ethics, and the Armchair Soldier

...today’s environment with military warfare and the affects it has on the ground pilots that are driving drones to eliminate targets and terrorists. 10 years ago the Iraq invasion was a remote control game for the soldiers, very similar to how we use our remote controls for channel surfing on the TV or video games today. Many people use remote controls to play games, shoot animals, and blow up buildings to entertain themselves. The military uses similar remote controls to direct and deliver devastating military assaults against enemies and terrorists. Today the operations of the traditional chain of command is similar to writing directions for robots but without having to think about ethics behind it. Now soldiers do not have to be carrying pounds of gear while fighting and fearing for their lives, instead they do their jobs sitting down, they have something in common with philosophers who do their job sitting down. John quoted, “For the first time in history, soldiers have something in common with philosophers: they can do their jobs sitting down.” This provides the remote control soldier additional time and ability to think about how they will use a drone to eliminate a target. Soldiers today need to work their way through arriving at the logical answer of their orders and decisions while working through existential responsibility. This will not be easy and will need additional training to provide creative ways to make correct and rapid decisions. Past leaders worked their way...

What to Do If Garage Door Remote Stop Functioning Instantly

...What to do if Garage Door Remote Stop Functioning Instantly A garage door remote control is an electronic device which enables a garage door to open or close without getting down from the car and unnecessary lifting the heavy garage door. An infra red signal is sent from the remote to the receiver at the door which enables the motor fixed at the garage door to activate a switch that in turn opens or close the garage door. There may be various reasons due to which a garage remote may not work: * Infra red signal strength: The remote must be within the range of the garage. If it is away from the stated distance then the signals will not be received by the receiver fixed at the garage door. * Batteries: Check the batteries. Replace batteries if required. The batteries must be in good working condition. Weak or dead batteries will fail in sending signals. * Battery Terminals: Check for the battery terminals. If the battery terminals are covered with dirt, gently clean them. If the terminals loosen up with time gently tighten them up by pinching. If the terminals are wet, then it needs to be cleaned with a sand paper or steel wool and dried before inserting new batteries. * Reset: Sometimes reset may be required for the remote to work efficiently. Resetting the remote is done by removing the batteries for at least 30 seconds and re installing them. Resetting the receiver is done by plugging it out from the wall socket plug for at least 30 seconds and re-plugging...
