...Papers should include a critical view of how investigators have made choices regarding each of the important steps in the research process that we cover in class. What we're really interested in at each step is how much a single methodological choice dominates the research area, and therefore the errors inherent in such a dominant choice, that might underlie general conclusions about substantive phenomena. To reduce some of ambiguity about what these choices or points of criticism are, you can use the Martocchio and Harrison (1993) paper as a very loose guide, and you can take cues from the paper grading sheet that I've attached to this syllabus. The text of the paper (i.e., not counting references, tables, figures, and appendices) should not exceed 25 pages of double-spaced (6 lines per inch, 3 of which contain text), Times-Roman 12-point proportional text, with one inch margins. The paper is due by 9:00am on Friday, May 2nd. I want this one electronically. Please email me your write-up as a Word 2003 (.doc) file. I do not accept late papers or give incompletes. You will have already written the initial draft by completing the two take-home exercises, so you have no excuses. We'll talk more about this critique as the semester goes on. As I mentioned above, each of the exercises will also add to the completion of this paper. In past years some students have used the paper to gain deep expertise in a topic area and then...

Correlates of Career Decisions Among Children of Overseas Filipino Workers

...the career decision making process they undergo. It is also important to know which factors they consider or disregard in their career decisions. At stake in making the right career decision is their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Thus, it is imperative that they choose the occupation that best fits each of them. Majority of the local researches on career decisions and the factors influencing them focus on adolescents. Similarly, the literature and studies on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) usually delve on the economic and social repercussions of overseas employment (Asis, 2004; Nicodemus, 1997). There is no available study regarding the career decisions of the adolescent children of OFWs in particular. Although a recent research on the impact of migration on Filipino families revealed the career aspirations of young children (Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrant and Itinerant People of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, Alipato 55 2003, in Asis, 2004), this study, which employed adolescents,...

A Research Paper on Guru Nanak

...Guru Nanak is quoted as saying that he had come to the world in search of Truth. What this research paper intends to do is give a historical biography of Guru Nanak and the Truth he was referring to. Moreover, this paper seeks to find out where his journey for Truth ultimately led him, and what we, as a society, can learn from this journey. If something is to be gained from reading this article/research paper, I hope it’s more then some student somewhere getting some benefit when having to write a research paper on some religious topic. Spark. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh (1992) states that Owen Cole has traced the source of the term “guru” to the Aiteraya Upanisad and the Kulnarnava Tantra. “Gu” signifies darkness and “ru” is that which restrains it; “so a guru is a restrainer of ignorance.” This understanding is shared in the Janam-Sakhi text: “via the Guru, the light, the ontological basis of all, becomes visible.” Nanak is thus charged to deliver the message bequeathed to him through the vision. For the next twenty-four years Guru Nanak traveled throughout India and beyond, spreading the Divine Word (p. 341). INTRODUCTION In order to research the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, we must focus on analyzing the data relating to the personality and the man that was Guru Nanak and not so much the Sikh religion that follows him today. More specifically, we must look into some of the primitive thoughts and teachings that surrounded Guru Nanak in his time. Finally, we...

Business Ethics and Economic Collapse

...Running head: CAUSE OF ECONOMIC CONDITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE UNETHICAL BUSINESS THAT LED TO IT Final Paper James Smith Hodges University GEB/PAD 6376 Dr. Forrer Week Due: 14 Due: 08/14/2011 Submitted: 08/10/2011 INTRODUCTION (Part 1) Why has the unemployment rate been above 12 percent for the last several years? Why have so many prior successful businesses closed in the last four years? Why have so many major corporations and publicly traded companies filed for bankruptcy? Why did a house that used to cost $200,000.00 just sell for $40,000.00? Why are foreclosures at the highest rate in US history? Maybe the question to ask is what has caused all of this? There are so many questions to be answered when it comes to the economic conditions in the United States. How did it get into the current condition? What were the signs of slipping into the crisis (economic indicators)? Whose actions were responsible? Was the responsible party also guilty of unethical behavior (big issue) or was it accidental. How long will it take for the economy to get back to being productive? In the past, America has been a very productive, successful country. There have been other recessions and a depression that have affected the U.S. but for some reason this current crisis was started by a completely different chain of events. What was the chain of events that triggered this...

Data Collection Paper

...Data Collection Paper Team C RES/341 21March11 Sara Skowronski Data Collection Introduction Review of Literature The first peer-reviewed article was showing how in the 1950s, SUV’s (sport utility vehicle) sales increased tremendously with baby boomers. People were in need of larger vehicles to accommodate their entire family. This was not just for domestic vehicles this also included foreign vehicle. With so many people interested in purchasing the SUV’s, this led to other car companies designing more comfortable, larger vehicles. Another peer-reviewed article was in regards to the searching strategies people used before actually purchasing a new vehicle. Not everyone can walk into a dealership and know exactly what they are looking for in their price range and it is readily available. That is why most people before purchasing a vehicle use a strategy before purchasing. Not everyone’s search strategies are the same, not everyone is looking for the exact type of vehicle. Some automobile companies sent out surveys to some of their customers for a 3 month span to see how satisfied they were with the new vehicles and what the new vehicle may not have had that the consumer would have liked. When the surveys were returned they categorized the responses to see where improvements could be made to accommodate more people. The next peer-reviewed article pertained to how well auto incentives increase business. This article was in...

Auditing

...statement stating if there is substantial doubt of the company to continue as a going concern. According to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, AU 341 describes the requirements for the auditor’s evaluation of an entity’s going concern. This standard states that an auditor’s responsibility is to evaluate if there is substantial doubt about an entity’s capability to carry on as a going concern for the next year. The period of substantial doubt is not to exceed twelve months. This evaluation is based upon any evidence that he or she has accumulated during the normal course of the audit. If there is substantial doubt about an entity’s ability to continue as a going concern for a reasonable period of time not to exceed one year, the auditor should review management’s plan to remedy the problems. If the substantial doubt goes unresolved, the auditor should add an explanatory paragraph to the audit report. In the event that an auditor receives a request to reissue his or her evaluation of going concern and remove the explanatory paragraph, one can refer to the PCAOB’s AU Section 9341 for the interpretations of AU 341. These inquiries usually arise when the circumstances that caused substantial doubt for the company’s ability to continue as a going concern have been solved. AU 9341 interprets Section 341 by stating that the auditor is not indebted to reissue the report just because of the request. If the auditor does decide to release a new report, he...

Data Collection Major League Baseball

...Collection Paper (MLB) Laura L. Mason, Becky Matlock, and Nichole Noble RES/341 June 8, 2011 David Morrisson Data Collection Paper (MLB) Data collection is an important part of research and it requires that the right information be collected. Because of many types of data research it is imperative to make sure the data collected is present in the final analysis. This data can be shown in different formats such a graphical or tabular. Team A has chosen the Major League Baseball (MLB) data set and feels the population and the type of data collected will provide good resources for surveys to make informed decisions. Team A will review the types of ways data can be shown as well as some of the ethical issues that researchers may run into. Our research involves looking at the 30 MLB teams in how the statistics vary. The data set is a accumulation of information that includes what league they are in, the year of erection of each stadium, capacity of each stadium, salary of the team, wins for the season, batting average, attendance, earned run average (ERA), stolen bases (SB), and home runs (HR). The sample for this research topic is very sufficient. It includes all the teams in the league and portrays the same information for all of the teams. The population (teams) and the categories listed in the data set will provide Team A the information to complete our research into whether...
