While sitting at work drinking coffee, I feel the beginning of the heartburn, so I started thinking of how does the antacid work. According to Google.com “[a]n antacid is a substance which neutralizes stomach acidity… either directly [by] neutraliz[ing] acidity, increasing the pH, or reversibly reduc[ing] or block[ing] the secretion of acid by gastric cells to reduce acidity in the stomach” (web?). With that being said, Alka-Seltzer, a medication, contains reagents that cause it to react with water. ...hospitals due to preventable medical errors.[1] It has also been reported that this is only part of the problem, as thousands of other patients are adversely affected by medical errors or barely avoid injuries that are nonfatal.[2] These medical errors not only cost the loss of lives, but carry a financial burden that is estimated to be in a range of $17 billion to $29 billion annually. Additionally, there is physical and psychological pain and suffering related to these errors.[1] Another consequence is that medical errors diminish trust and satisfaction in the healthcare system and in healthcare professionals.[1] Ginette A. Pepper, PhD, RN, FAAN, a Professor and Helen Lowe Bamberger Colby Presidential Endowed Chair and Associate Dean for Research, University of Utah College of Nursing, Salt Lake City, spoke on medication safety for the geriatric nurse practitioner (GNP).[3] Dr. Pepper was trained as a pharmacologist with a nursing focus. She was one of the first NPs to add "geriatric" to her title as well as one of the first NPs to have prescriptive authority. Safety Principles and the Medication Use Process Dr. Pepper noted that safety issues are of the utmost importance for all healthcare providers.[3] Nursing as a profession has a long history of regarding patient safety as a primary precept of the profession. Florence Nightingale stated in her book entitled Notes on Hospitals, published in 1859, "the very first requirement in a hospital that it should do the sick no harm."[4]...

Industry Analysis Paper

...PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY RESEARCH PAPER Submitted By RAKESHKUMAR PATEL NILAMBEN PATEL MONROE COLLEGE NOVEMBER 19, 2012 MG 620 RESEARCHES FOR STATISTICS Presented to DR. ANNE WALSH ABSTRACT The United States is the world’s largest market for pharmaceuticals and the world leader in biopharmaceutical research. U.S. firms conduct 80 percent of the world’s research and development in biotechnology and hold the intellectual property rights to most new medicines. In 2010, the pharmaceutical sector employed approximately 272,000 people (source: Bureau of Labor Statistics), and according to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (Parma), those manufacturers spent $67.4 billion on research and development in 2010. The markets for biologics, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, and generics show the most potential for growth and have become increasingly competitive. Biologics, valued at $67 billion in 2010 (source: IMS Health), account for a quarter of all new drugs in clinical trials or awaiting Food and Drug Administration approval. OTC market growth will be driven by a growing aging population and consumer trend to self-medication and the conversion of drugs from prescription to non-prescription or OTC status. Generic drug sales in the United States were valued at $78 billion in 2010 (source: IMS Health). The U.S. market is the world’s largest free-pricing market for pharmaceuticals and has a favorable patent...

...just hamburgers, cheeseburgers, french fries, shakes, soft drinks, and apple pie. The carhops were eliminated to make McDonald's a self-serve operation. Mac and Dick McDonald had taken great care in setting up their kitchen like an assembly line to ensure maximum efficiency. The restaurant's name was again changed, this time to simply "McDonald's" and reopened its doors on December 12, 1948. In 1953, the McDonald brothers began to franchise their successful restaurant, starting in Phoenix, Arizona and Downey, California; the latter is today the oldest surviving McDonald's restaurant. The McDonald brothers created Speedee to symbolize the quick and efficient service system that they had devised. They later withdrew Speedee because the Alka-Seltzer mascot was named Speedy, and McDonald's did not...

Markting

...ADVERTISING'S FIFTEEN JIB FOWLES* BASIC APPEALS Emotional Appeals THE NATURE OF EFFECTIVE advertisements was recognized full well by the late media philosopher Marshall McLuhan . In his Understanding Media, the first sentence of the section on advertising reads, "The continuous pressure is to create ads more and more in the image of audience motives and desires ." By giving form to people's deep-lying desires, and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for, advertisers have the best chance of arresting attention and affecting communication . And that is the immediate goal of advertising : to tug at our psychological shirt sleeves and slow us down long enough for a word or two about whatever is being sold . We glance at a picture of a solitary rancher at work, and "Marlboro" slips into our minds . Advertisers (I'm using the term as a shorthand for both the products' manufacturers, who bring the ambition and money to the process, and the advertising agencies, who supply the know-how) are ever more compelled to invoke consumers' drives and longings ; this is the "continuous pressure" McLuhan refers to . Over the past century, the American marketplace has grown increasingly congested as more and more products have entered into the frenzied competition after the public's dollars. The economies of other nations are quieter than ours since the volume of goods being hawked does not so greatly exceed demand . In some economies, consumer wares...
