If you could teach only one of the three qualities of good citizenship (respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness) to your child which one would you teach and why?

Although all three qualities of good citizenship are important to succeed in life, I believe respect outweighs them all. Respect is a quality that can be shown by the way a person behaves. Respect is an important quality because people can act in ways that do not reflect how they feel, the feeling of respect is more important than the behavior without feeling. The behavior will naturally follow when respect is present. Teaching a child respect is teaching them to consider other people feelings, needs, thoughts, wishes, and preferences. Also when a child learns to respect a person they learn to acknowledge a person along with being truthful and trustworthy. When a child has the quality of respect they will never have to use as much energy or resources to get their needs met. To have respect is to survive, so to teach a child respect is to help them succeed. Even though respect is earned it is still important to instill it in a child. Instilling respect in a child is teaching them to be loyal to others as well as obeying the rules and the land of the law. Respect also includes the idea of esteem or admiration. Having respected for a person is showing unspoken communication of how a child feels or views a person. Respect also helps build a strong and loyal relationship between people. For example, a child isn’t born with respect for adults, adults must earn a child’s respect by showing them all the affection and attention they need. This is another reason why I believe respect is the most important quality of citizenship because it can be nurtured into a child’s behavior just as well as honesty, loyalty, and self-esteem. I also believe the quality of respect will help a child be successful and focused

Respect

...What Respect Is On a practical level respect includes taking someone's feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. It means taking all of these seriously and giving them worth and value. In fact, giving someone respect seems similar to valuing them and their thoughts, feelings, etc. It also includes acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting their individuality and idiosyncrasies. Respect can be shown through behavior and it can also be felt. We can act in ways which are considered respectful, yet we can also feel respect for someone and feel respected by someone. Because it is possible to act in ways that do not reflect how we really feel, the feeling of respect is more important than the behavior without the feeling. When the feeling is there, the behavior will naturally follow. | |   Why It is Important Going back in time, respect played an important role in survival. If we think of a small tribe wandering in the desert we can imagine that a person not respected by anyone could be left behind and die. Such a person was considered to have no worth, no importance, no value to the group. This, I believe is the foundation of our psychological need to feel respected. Nowadays it seems much more possible to survive without being respected. Someone could, for example, inherit a large sum of money, have many servants and employees and have salesmen constantly calling on him and catering to him, yet not...

Respect

...Respect can be defined as a positive feeling of esteem for a person or entity. It denotes the regard and consideration shown by an individual towards others. There have been various philosophical works done in the past that try to define ‘respect’ comprehensively. The most substantial work has been done by Immanuel Kant. He stated that every individual deserves respect because he is an end in himself. Though, his theory is questioned, criticized or inferred in many ways, yet it is one of the significant works. It is hard to clearly demarcate the outline and definition of respect. But it is a feeling that can be mutually understood and felt. Respect cannot be demanded, it is an asset that has to be earned. From the very childhood kids are taught to respect their parents, elders, teachers and an unending list of social obligations. But an ambiguity arises when the teachings do no match the practical experiences. Children find it hard to respect certain persons or the same person in differing situations, viz. If a parent generally behaves positively with the children, it is normal for the child to reciprocate and show the same behaviour. But the anomaly arises when a parent confront or scold the child to make him understand a certain thing. The child wants to reciprocate his behaviour but the parent defies his behaviour and tells the child to respect him. Here the respect is tried to be imposed and not earned. This is a contradiction to respect. Nobody can earn respect...

Respect

...Respect 1) What is Respect? Respect for me is accepting others for who they are, including both their strengths and weaknesses. Every person is different and that is what makes us a diverse society. Accepting those differences and not insulting or being rude to them means respect. It also means that there are boundaries that should not be crossed. These boundaries are social lines that should not be crossed under any circumstance. These boundaries change depending on who it is (friend, colleague, family member, etc) and the time you have known that person. The more familiar the person, the fewer boundaries there are, and the higher up in society, the more respect and admiration they deserve. For example, the boundaries towards your boss are difference than your friends’ because there are many conversational topic that you don’t discuss with your boss in order to not cross those lines. In all, respecting someone is admiring him/her for strengths and not criticizing for weaknesses. 2) What does respect look like? Respect presents itself in different ways in different cultures. In the western world, respect was often shown as how conservative people dressed or spoke to each other. For example, in order to go to church, women had to wear long skirts and use a veil in their head. This showed that they had respect toward religion and God. Now days, people exhibit these respect traits less in a physical way because each person wants to be free in their development of personality...

Respect & Discipline

...Respect & Discipline The definition of respect is showing a positive feeling of esteem for another person or entity. But, respect is not tolerance; it has to be a genuine feeling of honor and not just putting up with the other person. Respect is an important first step in building a relationship and I value my relationship with the Army. Respect is not something that is done when it is convenient, it is done at all times. The Army teaches this as part of the 7 Core Values for many reasons. Even though the Army teaches us that respect is something that is given to the ranks, it is important to have respect for every soldier that I am in contact with whether or not I like them and whether or not they are ranked above me, below me or with me. It is not about respect for the individual as much as it is about respect for the rank. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect but especially those I am serving my country with. We all have to be part of the same team and treat each other the same way we expect to be treated. It is what keeps us a strong and unified. By having our superiors teach us the value of respect, they are uniting us for when we have to do combat. We have to rely on fellow soldiers as well as our superiors and without respect we would not care about helping each other. I can not expect others to treat me with respect when I am not showing them the same. This is taught to us in boot camp and we are expected to maintain the 7 Core Values at all times without...

Should We Always Respect Others Habitudes; However Cruel They May Seem from the Point of View of Our Values?

...Ethics Final Essay Should we always respect others habitudes; however cruel they may seem from the point of view of our values? Words: 3480 Introduction The aim of this essay will be to discuss whether respect should always be considered when facing others habitudes; however cruel they may seem from the point of view of our values. The relevance of this topic to relativism is found since controversy immediately breaks outs when the question of moral and cultural respect interferes with relativism. As we have seen in the previous cessions, everything is relative and especially when we are talking about respect. Since ages, many conflicts were emerging from divergent points of view, unaccepted practices of other’s cultures and disagreements on certain ethical beliefs. And since they are already two or more points of views in a conflict, relativism could be applied to all of them. Every single opinion could be relative, so which one should we respect? Well, this question therefore brings me to the other part of the problem which is concerning truth. What is true, good, and right to do? This question arouses a lot of debates among philosophers today. Since the nature of truth and goodness hasn’t been identified yet, it is still subjected to relativism. And respect cannot be worldly applied to specific values. In other words we cannot change the mind of people that are living by following what they believe to be true and right to do. It is know that everyone sees...

Respect

...into law. Through this act, The Belmont Report was developed over 4 year period of time that included an intense four day conference followed by monthly meetings until it was completed in April of 1979. The Belmont Report sets out to define the ethical principles and guidelines for the protection of human subjects of research. The report was established prior to Barney Clark and the artificial heart and therefore was the guidelines that the doctors and researchers had to follow. The report highlights three essential ethical elements that are pertinent in human research and their applications. It was the professional responsibility of the doctors and researchers involved to abide by previously established ethical guidelines. Respect for Persons Respect for the Persons as it relates to the Barney Clark case can be broken down into three important issues. Autonomy The doctors made the assumption that Barney Clark was a fully autonomous person at the time of the artificial heart experiment. In general it is not in doubt that Mr. Clark was an autonomous being, however his terminal condition could have affected his capacity with in the case. While he might have been autonomous in many areas of his life the issue that is relevant to the case was whether he possessed the capacity to make an informed consent. Informed Consent The nine basic rules4 for an informed consent are 1. Identifying the appropriate decision maker 2. Having the discussion at a time when...
