Eulogy Project

...Eulogy Project My family and I took a trip to Hawaii, where we had our first family reunion away from home. We all gathered on a boat to travel the coast of Honolulu. We all sat on the deck of the boat to watch the projector of our family history and pictures. We had our laughs and cries but afterwards we settled down for dinner. After dinner the grown ups let all the kids explore the boat. While all of the kids were walking, two of boys started to horse play and one fell off the side of the boat. I was one of the adults on site, not a bad or good swimmer, so jumped in immediately and tried to rescue the child as fast as I could. As I jumped in, I grabbed a life saver and put it around him. One of my family members was pulling him back on the deck as fast as they could. While he was getting pulled up, I was sinking and running out of oxygen slowly. My eyes were blurry and my head was getting heavy, but out of blurriness I saw someone yelling “Hang on! Hang on!” I had tried to hang on as long as I could, but I eventually died. They tried to recover me, but by then my lungs had already collapse because of the pressure of the water. On July 16, 2027, the world lost a great young woman in a tragic death. R.I.P. Reunion is short story that will help us understand the statement mentioned above. In this essay, there will be a short resume of the short story Reunion, an analytical part, and in the end an interpretation where the short story Living with strangers and reunion are compared. The story takes place in New York at noon, where Charlie would be in New York for an hour and a half, so he asked his dad who he has not seen in three years, if they could eat lunch together. He meets his dad and they go to a restaurant, and when his father tries to order something, he fails because he is so rude to the staff, and this happens three more times in till Charlie has to leave for his train, his dad apologizes and tries to buy him a newspaper, but he fails once again and then Charlie leaves. Reunion - Fame or Family?

...Essay and e-mail - Reunion A. An essay analyzing the short story This essay is going to be an analysis and interpretation of the short story ‘’Reunion’’ by John Cheever. It will begin with a summary of the short story. Afterwards the plot, the conflict and the setting will be analyzed. Then I’ll move on to the characterization, the possible surprise ending and the theme and message. Finally I will draw parallels between the short story ‘’Reunion’’ and the essay ‘’Living With Strangers’’ by Siri Hustvedt. ‘’Reunion’’ is a short story about a boy called Charlie and his last interaction with his father. Charlie was travelling by train from his grandmother’s to a cottage his mother had rented. He would be in New York for about an hour and thirty minutes while waiting for the new train and therefore he wanted to meet his father. He hadn’t seen his father for three years and Charlie was exited to see the man he looked up to again. Because of the lack of time, they couldn’t go and see the father’s club, so they had to find a restaurant in the area. They went to four restaurants and they get more or less thrown out of all four. The father in this short story was either really drunk or/and very arrogant. In all occasions he talked down to waiters or behaved bad in one way or the other. In spite of his bad behavior they managed to get a ‘’Beefeater Gibson’’ at one place. It all ended with the father going up to a newsstand, again with a bad attitude, which was the final straw for Charlie...

John Cheever's "Reunion"

...The short story “Reunion” is about a boy named Charlie, who hasn’t seen his father for a very long time. He hasn’t seen him due to the reason that his parents divorced eachother exactly three years ago. As a result of that, Charlie makes an appointment with his father, simply to see him again. During this appointment, they visit four different restaurants, where the father’s dissatisfaction and bad mood gets them kicked out every single time. While being in the restaurants, the father’s behaviour towards the employees is very aggressive and arrogant, which eventually results in them getting kicked out. After visiting a ton of restaurants, Charlie remembers that he has a train to catch. Time passes by and he has to leave. But, as he wants to leave, his father kindly offers him to purchase a newspaper – an offer he can’t refuse. While the father is ordering a newspaper, he yet again gets aggressive and angry with the employee working there. Charlie simply hasn’t got time to wait anymore as he’ll miss his train, so in a rush he manages to say goodbye and silently walks away. This was the last time he saw his father. From an environmental point of view, the story takes place at the Grand Central Station in New York City. As Grand Central Station is a train station, it is logical that both Charlie and his father go by train to meet up. In the story, we hear how Charlie schedules time to see his father while he waits for his next train. Therefore it seems like Charlie is used to...

1950's Rich Family Reunion

...The photo I chose is a black and white photo of a 1950’s Rich Family Reunion; my shutterbug father was probably the photographer. Grandmother Rich liked gathering all of her children, in-laws and grandchildren (about 25 total then) for two weeks; in this picture we are in a rustic mountain resort. Our anchor is a dark upright piano in the corner of the dining hall, with its painted wood beamed ceiling, painted wood paneled walls, hardwood floors and dark curtain rods with opened light drapes; an overcast sky and leafy trees are visible outside the four casement windows. The photo does not show the hall’s buffet line, long wooden tables or rigid chairs. We’re dressed in casual clothes - tee shirts, shorts, sandals, tennis shoes, sleeveless...

Figurative Language In The Reunion By Maya Angelou

...Angelou uses these genres to display her work. “The Reunion” by Maya Angelou is about a black woman named Philomena Jenkins. Jenkins is playing the Sunday Matinee at the Blue Palm Cafe in Chicago. This club is usually filled with African Americans, and Jenkins is very surprised to see a white woman walk in with a large black man. Seeing this forces Jenkins to recall some racial experiences. Angelou uses many rhetorical devices and lots of figurative language in the text. These things affect the tone/mood by using both using both to enhance the meaning of the messages Angelou tries to deliver in the text. Angelou’s purpose is to persuade the reader and have the reader empathize with what Angelou has been through. Angelou’s past experiences have most likely influenced her plot. The theme of “The Reunion” is “Harsh experiences leave scars that you’ll always carry in life.” An example of this can be seen when Jenkins sees the white woman at the club and recalls her racial...

...ENGLISH 106 1 Narrative Essay Unit 1, Assignment 1 Jeffrey Wayne Van Egeren ENGLISH 106 2 Document Contents This document contains the author’s narrative essay involving the topic chosen for a thesis statement. The thesis statement will be on the subject “A Family Reunion”. The final page holds an outline used to perform this essay. ENGLISH 106 3 A Family Reunion With this assignment, I have chosen “A Family Reunion” to incorporate within my thesis statement. I believe that this topic is best suited for me because my family has never had a happy or joyous reunion that I can remember. The disease of alcoholism runs very deep within the family history, and for that reason, I grew up in a very dysfunctional family setting. With that being stated, I will begin by saying, “Family Reunions are nothing but chaos, arguments, and showing off. Nothing enjoyable or happily memorable ever arises from having times put aside for this said occasion.” My parents were divorced when I was only 4 years old and to this day I still see the burnt images of their final argument instilled within my mind. My mother, rest her soul, had done what she could for our family, regardless of the fact that my father had given absolutely no support for the 9 children. I remember seeing my father, maybe twice, within...

Do we have enough resources? Can we get the total cooperation of everybody? After hours of contemplating, I decided to give it a try. I posted in my facebook status something like " Guys, may idea ako, what if mag reunion tayo?" I was surprised how social media works, the idea spread rapidly and the responses are mostly positive and so encouraging. It seemed that reunion is in the offing. I was so excited that day, old memories filled my mind and I felt like a teenager again. The idea of meeting some of my friends again after 25 years is simply overwhelming that I kept thinking about...
