“Manila” is an independent film directed by prize-winning directors Raya Martin and one of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila’s (PLM) pride, Adolf Alix Jr.

The film received a lot of praises and recognition from the moviegoers as well as from the film critics. This “indie” film was first exhibited at the recent Cannes International Film Festival and then the 31st Moscow International Film Festival and has received eight other invitations from other international film festivals either for competition or exhibition. As for its homecoming, the Philippine premiere “Manila” opened the 2009 Cinemalaya Film Festival and Competition last July 17, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, the main theater of CCP. By the success achieved by this film, Adolf Alix Jr. as a magna cum laude with a degree in Mass Communications has made the PLM community beamed with great pride.

“Manila” is a two-part black and white film with Piolo Pascual portraying the main roles. It was divided into two segments: the day and the night segments, each director directs his own portion of the film. The day segment was directed by Raya Martin, it is about William (Piolo Pascual) who is a drug addict trying to fix his life and to win back his family and friends. Throughout the segment it shows how William was being rejected by the people around him eventually he got tired of rebuilding and reconnecting with the people he loves and gives in to the call of his addiction. The memorable scene for me, was the last scene of this segment when William takes the drug (shabu) and its evident in his face the feeling of being relieved for wanting so much but at the same time there were tears slowly flowing down on his cheeks as if saying “I really don’t want this but I have no choice. This is my only source of satisfaction”

The night segment was of course directed by Adolf Alix Jr. The latter part of “Manila” revolves around Piolo Pascual as Phillip who was a personal bodyguard of the mayor’s son (Jay Manalo). His loyalty lies with his boss because he believes that his boss considers him as part of his family. Phillip was so much submissive to the extent of doing everything to please his boss. There was an incident where his boss had an encounter with his girlfriend’s (played by Alessandra de Rossi) ex-boyfriend (played by Baron Geisler) and Phillip shoot and killed the guy in defense of his boss. This incident revealed how his boss viewed him not as one of his family but his personal lap-dog. He was left on his own because his boss didn’t want to get involved with the murder. As he struggles to hide, he experiences the unknown cruelty of the city.

The two segments presented a dark and cruel side of the city of Manila. It shows how heartless it can be to the people and how it can render the people weak and helpless with the situation they are in.

A unique thing about this film is the romantic flick involving the behind-the-scenes were inserted in the middle and end of the film. This gives a distinct partition between the two portions of the film. The City of Love was directed by Lav Diaz, it is about the liaison between a nurse and his remorseful boyfriend. The setting was at the Ospital ng Maynila where the boyfriend (Jon Avila) reconciles with his girlfriend (Iza Calzado) and asked her to marry him.

To sum it all up, contradicting to what some people perceived about Manila as a city of glitz and glamour the film “Manila” showed the other side of the city as violent, cruel and full of apathy. It presented the hidden harsh realities of Manila.

...of the press and the freedom of the press access to official documents. In contrast to these lofty ideals, the Philippines press from the time of its inception has faced American influence, confiscation of assets for those papers not among the ownership of a former leader, and mistrust of reporters due to shoddy reporting. Newspapers were being published on board American ships as they first entered Manila Bay in 1898. The Bounding Billow was published on board Dewey's flag-ship, and other on-ship U.S. papers included the American Soldier, Freedom and the American, according to the Philippine Journalism Review. These early papers followed U.S. attempts to "civilize" the Filipinos. American journalists in the Philippines went so far as to characterize the natives as "little brown soldiers who enjoyed parading before the patient Americans," and as "a group of warlike tribes who will devour each other when American troops leave." The Americans wasted no time in establishing a press system in the Philippines modeled on that of the one in place in the United States. The Manila Times published its first issue in October 1898, making it the first English-language newspaper in the islands. Newspapers published in the Philippines were under strong American influence and went so far as to champion the annexation of the islands by the United States. Among the newspapers taking this stance were La Democracia and Consolidacion Nacional. Among the papers holding out for independence were...

...he produced a body of work unmatched in richness and range by any of his contemporaries. Living a life wholly devoted to the craft of conjuring a world through words, he was the writer’s writer. In the passion with which he embraced his country’s manifold being, he was his people’s writer as well. Nick Joaquín was born in the old district of Pacò in Manila, Philippines, on September 15, 1917, the feast day of Saint Nicomedes, a protomartyr of Rome, after whom he took his baptismal name. He was born to a home deeply Catholic, educated, and prosperous. His father, Leocadio Joaquín, was a person of some prominence. Leocadio was a procurador (attorney) in the Court of First Instance of Laguna, where he met and married his first wife, at the time of the Philippine Revolution. He shortly joined the insurrection, had the rank of colonel, and was wounded in action. When the hostilities ceased and the country came under American rule, he built a successful practice in law. Around 1906, after the death of his first wife, he married Salomé Márquez, Nick’s mother. A friend of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Leocadio was a popular lawyer in Manila and the Southern Tagalog provinces. He was unsuccessful however when he made a bid for a seat in the Philippine Assembly representing Laguna. Nick Joaquín’s mother was a pretty, well-read woman of her time who had studied in a teacher-training institute during the Spanish period. Though still in her teens when the United States took possession of the...

...perspective: 1. Delay in Reports: Reports from the branches located outside Metro Manila are sent to the Manila Head Office through passenger buses every other day while reports from Metro Manila branches are received daily. 2. Difficulty of ascertaining the true level of branch revenues: During monthly meetings, Ms. Pimentel provides top management with past sales and expenses data for the last five years together with forecasted conditions for the coming year. Some branches exceed the sales budget while some are always below the forecast. Ms. Pimentel, the chief accountant, attributes negative sales variances partly to unrecorded sales and tampering of official receipts. Unrecorded sales or receipts may be done in several ways, examples: a. To provide repair service without the issuance of official receipts. b. To use spare parts of a “good” frame when servicing an order for repair instead of taking the part form the spare parts inventory. The frame from which the part is taken is later on declared as defective. c. The branch staff services orders from customers using the company’s own suppliers. 3. Connivance: Ms. Pimentel believes that this practice implies that personnel at the branches connive with each other in not reportin some revenues for the branch. Statement of the problem: In view of these cases, Ms. Pimentel is proposing to top management that a review of the company’s internal control system be made. Mr. Francisco, the VP for Finance...

...Presented at the DLSU Research Congress 2014 De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines March 6-8, 2014 Community-Based Decision Support System for the Manila Health Department Heidelle Marie Jahnelle Cervantes1, Calvin Chua2, Meladaine Ronquillo3, Iñaki Julian Tolentino4 and Ms. Lissa Andrea K. Magpantay1,* De La Salle University, IT Department lissa.magpantay@delasalle.ph Abstract: Decision Support Systems are used extensively in different industries to assist in decision-making across a wide spectrum of problem areas. These systems are being developed with much consideration of its enormous benefits, both in time and cost savings, and most especially in helping organizations in their decision making. The researchers have identified the main problem of the Planning and Coordination Unit in the Manila Health Department (MHD) which is its poor use of information resulting to wrong identification of specific programs for the communities of Manila City. This results to the difficulty of health centers in identifying what barangays need to be prioritized and what nutritional programs have to be implemented. The objective of the study is to develop a community-based decision support system which is web-based that helps MHD in planning and implementing nutrition and health programs to the community in District V of Manila City. Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology was used to develop the system and PHP, HTML, and My SQL were used as the primary programming language...
