World War I, which was fought from 1914 to 1918, was known for its unprecedented carnage and destruction because of newly developed weapons such as the machine gun, poison gas, and the airplane. Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire were at war with Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the United States. Erich Maria Remarque was drafted into the German army to fight in World War I. Remarque published Im Westen Nichts Neues in 1928, and the book was translated into English in 1929 as All Quiet on the Western Front. This novel is about the experiences of ordinary German soldiers during the war. This is Remarque’s experience of the war using a German soldier, Paul Baumer, who witnesses the war and tells of soldiers’ experiences
