Review Of The Song It's Not Easy Being Green

Being Green: A Life of Opportunity When I hear the iconic Kermit the Frog’s statement about the hardships of being green, I assume that being such an unordinary color could be seen as a difficult lifestyle because of the perpetual contrast the color places between the frog and the rest of society. Nobody else within society seems to be green, and the world must judge Kermit because he is out of the ordinary. However, in his song “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” Kermit is actually lamenting about how this life is difficult because he is in fact ordinary, blending in with the greenness of the natural landscape around him. Unlike Kermit, however, I believe that both the contrast of Kermit with modern society and the comparison of the frog with nature …show more content…
As little to no green creatures have preceded Kermit in society, there is no basis for stereotypes to be formed. As a result, while impressions can be easily made about the frog due to his difference, Kermit’s life is a blank slate for both positive and negative impressions. This may seem like a risky lifestyle, but many who suffer from negative stereotypes upon birth likely desire such a blank slate to build a positive reputation from. Kermit has an advantage that many non-green beings do not, and his stance as a cultural icon proves that he has utilized his difference to create a positive environment for both himself, and creatures of all …show more content…
In fact, many distinct members of society are mocked for being out of the ordinary, even though their differences may have the same ability as Kermit’s, to make the world a little bit brighter. Kermit’s ability to make an impact despite his color serves to be a bold lesson: differences should be admired, not shunned. If society can admire the work of a frog whose existence is anything but ordinary, we should also admire the work of those who have used their human difference -- whether it be color, gender, or ability -- to create a positive impact on both his or her own life as well as the lives of others. Judgements may be inevitable upon seeing a person or creature who may be different, but those judgements should not distract from the remarkable abilities that being may obtain, regardless of whether or not their life has been easy. The easiness of one’s life is often not remembered anyways, it is the impact that the person has made using

Little Shop of Horrors Critique

...received very positive reviews and won several awards including the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. The story is very well thought-out and has some interesting turns. I am going to analyze/critique the film version and discuss the following: the book, music (lyrics), dance, and screenplay. As stated in the introduction, Howard Ashman wrote the book. I believe it was a very well written comedy musical turned into a film. The simple plot line was easy to follow; however, it was hard to predict what exactly would happen next. The mixture of events that could actually happen versus those that could not added a very humorous side to the movie. The plot was very standard of the time, a store owner who is trying hard to keep business going along with a young, energetic man looking to make money and also find the woman of his dreams. The addition of the plant to the plot created many different opportunities for the story to go. The plant appealed to the people passing by bringing huge profits for the business, which was very good. However, on the bad side, the plants main intent was world domination. In my opinion, the plant was the reason why this book was so good. Imagining and seeing a plant grow and talk is extremely funny to see, which was probably by design since the Little Shop of Horrors was a comedy musical. As the film continues, the storyline gets more interesting. The plant continues to get bigger making the audience wonder what it’s going to do next. Furthermore...

Pop Culture

...Social Media i Pop Culture Eric Richardson English Composition Ashley Inguanta August 27, 2012 My absolute favorite musical album is D’Angelo’s album entitled Voodoo, released in 2000. As a musician and vocalist myself, I’d say that I’m usually a bit more critical of music projects than I would be of any other form of art. It’s usually an easy task for me to appreciate the creativity of other art forms because I don’t have any type of bias. With music, however, it has been my lifelong passion. Since I was a child, I’ve been a student and a fan. As a fan, I’ve always looked for an album that could hold my interest throughout the entire list of tracks. I think even the most casual listener wants the best album possible. I can’t imagine anyone would want to spend their hard earned money on a mediocre album, with only a few songs standing out as favorites. Unfortunately, this has likely been the case since the Eight Track Tape was phased out. There was no rewind or fast forward option, so the albums simply had to be good. It’s a lot harder found what I’d consider a good album, present day. In my opinion, a good album evokes just as much emotion as it does provoke those and give the desire to dance, particularly when speaking of R&B and Soul genres. By these standards, most albums fail. Most albums have one ore the other, but very seldom have all of these characteristics. D’Angelo’s Voodoo was a progressive work that had a retro feel. I think what...

Country Music and American Culture

...Zhang Zishuang Professor Benjamin Hanna Western Culture III 0126 22 December 2014 Country music and American culture When you walk along the street, you may hear Taylor Swift’s new album kept playing again and again; When you pass by a truck, you may be attracted by the euphonious ‘country road’ by Johnny Denver; When you step into a bar, country music will frequently appear among many energetic Rock songs. Undeniably, country music has been everywhere and even gained worldwide popularity in recent years. Caught by the beautiful sound and moving melodies of the American country music, I decided to lift the veil of American country music to people who have a passion for it. Besides the superficial acoustic enjoyment, the American country music is a perfect embodiment of American history, culture and customs. Once you could profoundly understand and sincerely appreciate the American country music, you are offered a golden opportunity to comprehend what the American truly value. In this paper, I will discuss how country music reflects the American culture in three dimensions, including American rustic culture, American family culture and view of marriage, and American urbanization and contemporary value. From where I stand, country music is more than a kind of popular music, but also the epitome of American culture. To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into five main sections. Firstly, the background knowledge of country music will be provided. Secondly, I...

Maintaining Marriage Quality in Stepfamilies

...least one step-relative. Three in ten have step-siblings or half-siblings, eighteen percent have a living stepparent, and thirteen percent have at least one stepchild.  More of these newly constituted families also come from single adults with children who had previous relationships but never married. About twenty percent of all American families are stepfamilies. “Of every ten couples who remarry, buoyed by love and renewed hope, six divorce yet again (Wisdom and Green 2). In the traditional marriage, much like the song says, “First comes love, then comes marriage, and then comes the baby carriage,” well the exact opposite happens in the stepfamily marriage. Stepfamilies have been re-categorized into two types. One is simple stepfamilies which include children from one parent, and complex stepfamilies which include children from both parents. Research indicates that the more complex blended family structures are the more difficulties and challenges they face. To give yourself the best chance of success, it’s critical to start planning how a stepfamily will function before the marriage even takes place. Now that you and your partner have decided to take the next step to make a life together you will need to include the children from one or both of your previous relationships. In order to successfully blend two families there are a number of important matters that should be discussed. Once a couple decides to remarry they will need to agree where they will live, if they...

Rrl Effect of Music on Plant Growth

...CHAPTER III I. Review of Related Literature and Studies In daily life, many phenomena supporting the claim that plants acknowledge and respond to music have been observed. For example, in the Dai minority autonomy in Xishuang Banna of China, there is a type of legume grass whose 2 small symmetric leaves on its main leaf cushion dance rhythmically to harmonious music. Interestingly, it does not show any response if blown or caressed with hands. (Hou and Mooneyham, 1999) Therefore, it is natural to assume that the effects of music, and thus sound, on plants, might be beneficial, instead of merely “dancing”. A good gauge of this is plant growth, which can be measured in a number of ways: number, size and weight of fruits, storage duration and photosynthetic ability of the leaves, among other methods. Researches on these variables have been carried out since the first commercial experiment in 1972 by Charnoe, who studied the effects of sound waves on budding of barley. Subsequently, Carlson of the United States of America treated various crops and vegetables with high frequency sound waves (Spillane, 1991), and the Xian Tuo company in Osaka, Japan, has treated vegetables with classical music (Xiao Hai, 1990). Reports of the growth of many record-breaking fruits have also been attributed to music. For example, French scientists have cultivated a 2 kilogram tomato, and British scientists have produced a 13 kilogram beet (Hou and Mooneyham, 1999). This technology and field of...

Sondheim's a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

...Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum When I think of musical comedy, Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the first show that comes to mind. Just three years ago, I had never heard of Forum before, until my high school choir director announced that it would be our 2008 musical. I was hesitant to audition at first, not knowing the plot or what I was getting myself into, but now I can honestly say that it was my favorite musical production ever to be a part of. Forum, a musical farce written in two acts and Sondheim’s first work on Broadway both as composer and lyricist, is “a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom” (MTI 1). In Sondheim’s own words, “there’s not a wasted moment in Forum, and the truth and the test of it is that the play is just as funny when performed by a group of high school students as it is when it is performed on Broadway. It is never not funny. The reason is, it is based on situations so solid that you cannot not laugh” (Gordon 25). A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a collaboration between American librettist Burt Shevelove, playwright Larry Gelbart, and musical theater extraordinaire, Stephen Sondheim. Originally, Shevelove had done a version of a Roman comedy in college and thought that a professional Broadway production would be very...

Something Borrowe, Gladwell

...One day this spring, a psychiatrist named Dorothy Lewis got a call from her friend Betty, who works in New York City. Betty had just seen a Broadway play called "Frozen," written by the British playwright Bryony Lavery. "She said, 'Somehow it reminded me of you. You really ought to see it,'" Lewis recalled. Lewis asked Betty what the play was about, and Betty said that one of the characters was a psychiatrist who studied serial killers. "And I told her, 'I need to see that as much as I need to go to the moon.'" Lewis has studied serial killers for the past twenty-five years. With her collaborator, the neurologist Jonathan Pincus, she has published a great many research papers, showing that serial killers tend to suffer from predictable patterns of psychological, physical, and neurological dysfunction: that they were almost all the victims of harrowing physical and sexual abuse as children, and that almost all of them have suffered some kind of brain injury or mental illness. In 1998, she published a memoir of her life and work entitled "Guilty by Reason of Insanity." She was the last person to visit Ted Bundy before he went to the electric chair. Few people in the world have spent as much time thinking about serial killers as Dorothy Lewis, so when her friend Betty told her that she needed to see "Frozen" it struck her as a busman's holiday. But the calls kept coming. "Frozen" was winning raves on Broadway, and it had been nominated for a Tony. Whenever someone who knew Dorothy...

...teachers. He starts off with an anecdote about a great principal who resigned because of burnout, not from dealing with unreasonable students, but from dealing with unreasonable parents. This problem, Clark says, is pervasive among teachers and administrators and something needs to be done to stop the talent drain before the pool of passionate educators runs dry. Here are some of the basic things he wants parents would understand: Teachers are professional educators, not babysitters: If they offer advice, take it into consideration rather than getting defensive. Trust the teacher’s word. Stop making excuses for your kids. It’s not the end of the world if your kid gets in trouble, or even fails: Kids need to learn about consequences. Meeting with a teacher to fight a bad grade undermines this lesson. Good grades don’t necessarily mean good teachers: It’s often the best teachers who expect the most from your kid. Instead of mindlessly bad-mouthing the teacher in front of other parents or, most of all, your kids, take the time to find out what’s going on. Having taught high school, for a millisecond, I can relate to most of Clark’s advice. Most, that is, but certainly not all of it. The article does come off, in places, as if the teacher is always right. But I do believe there is an us-against-them attitude when it comes to parent-teacher relations. Hearing that some parents bring lawyers to school meetings with them to discuss things, such as a child’s alleged cheating, is...
