A REVIEW ON LOGISTICS INDUSTRY
INTRODUCTION:
LOGISTICS:
The detailed coordination of a complex operation involving many people, facilities, or supplies and also the organization of moving, housing, and supplying troops and equipment.
The term "logistics" originates from the ancient Greek "λόγος" ("logos"—"ratio, word, calculation, reason, speech, oration"). Logistics is considered to have originated in the military's need to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and rations as they moved from their base to a forward position. In ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine empires, there were military officers with the title ‘Logistikas’ who were responsible for financial management and distribution of supplies. The Oxford English dictionary defines logistics as: “The branch of military science having to do with procuring, maintaining and transporting material, personnel and facilities.”The American Council of Logistics Management defines logistics as “the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient and effective flow, and storage of goods, services and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements.”
SIGNIFICANCE OF LOGISTICS:
Logistics management is that part of the supply chain which plans, implements and controls the efficient, effective, forward and backward (reverse) flow and storage of goods, services and information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers' requirements rather to the customers delight. A professional working in the field of logistics management is called a logistician. Logistics, as a business concept, evolved only in the 1950s.This was mainly due to the increasing complexity of supplying one's

The causes of the issues above are due to the following: * No formal structure of roles and responsibilities. * No formal policies and procedures. * No formal specifications on file. * The Expeditor has way too many functions and not enough time to devote to picking up and delivering goods as well as creating or changing specifications and writing confirming orders. * Although...

Basic International Communications

...Part 1 China is a collectivist culture as a whole, meaning that they put group – family, school, work, or country – needs and goals ahead of their own. In general this translates into acting with decorum at all times and even subjugating their own feelings and opinions for the good of the group. In American culture, silence is frequently interpreted as agreement, however, in the Chinese culture an individual will remain silent rather than offer a dissenting opinion so as to make sure both parties save face. Face is an essential component of Chinese culture as the concept translates to honor, respect and good reputation. In order to successfully conduct business in China it is essential that the representative never lose face themselves nor cause the loss of face in others. The primary code of behavior and ethics in China is based on Confucianism, stressing duty, sincerity, loyalty, honor, piety and respect for age and seniority. “Through maintaining harmonious relations as individuals, society itself becomes stable (Kwintesssential, 2013).” Non-verbal communication is as important as verbal and provides even more pitfalls. In China a frown is interpreted as disagreement which can cause one party to lose face. Facial expressions, tone of voice and even posture are all examined to try to determine what someone feels. In America, eye contact is considered a sign that you are paying attention and care about what the person is saying. In China it is considered rude and...

Procurement Case Study - Blozis

...There are currently no clear guidelines and procedures for the procurement process including a current process map. • There will be resistance to making the changes from various personnel regarding the change of roles and responsibilities. There may also be resistance from various personnel regarding the tightening of inventory control that will be implemented as his may be construed as a lack of trust. • Our expeditor is unable to carry out his duties of inventory control as effectively as possible due to much of his time being spent doing deliveries and pick-ups for parts. • Unless full control of Purchase Orders are undertaken by designated personnel we will continue to have problems with the 3 way matching process on accounts payable of PO, receiving document and invoice. Statement of Issues The issues that we are encountering include a lack of inventory control within our facility. The instance of the 2 micrometers going “missing” would not have happened had there been correct inventory control processes in place and these processes followed. ...contact the expediter in ordering instead of going through the requisitioner. This in turn caused faulty paperwork on items leaving the stockroom and the books would start to get out of order. Another problem was that there isn’t enough communication between departments and this has led to drop in efficiency. Everyone claims they did their job correctly but there isn’t a paper trail to prove it. Assumptions: The supply manager had no technical training on the job which is highly technical in nature, it was assumed that he had a fair grasp of the engineering terminology used in the field and so she could handle the department. She definitely was dealing with as little as she understood and so the expeditor took over the procurement process bypassing the important part of the process. The expediter who was formerly one of the technicians in the production shop and had some technical training in the army but had no background in strategic procurement processes was often contacted on ordering problems, he was not following the requisition procedures. Defining the issue: The main issue and statement of problem here is the expediter performing several daunting roles for which he is not properly trained i.e. playing the role of engineering by substituting components from the stock room, and converting oral description into commercial specifications. He also played the role of...

...Chapter 18 Production Planning and Control In any manufacturing enterprise production is the driving force to which most other functions react. This is particularly true with inventories; they exist because of the needs of production. In this chapter the relationship of production planning and control to work-in-process inventories is stressed. Objectives of Production Planning Control The ultimate objective of production planning and control, like that of all other manufacturing controls, is to contribute to the profits of the enterprise. As with inventory management and control, this is accomplished by keeping the customers satisfied through the meeting of delivery schedules. Specific objectives of production planning and control are to establish routes and schedules for work that will ensure the optimum utilization of materials, workers, and machines and to provide the means for ensuring the operation of the plant in accordance with these plans. Production Planning and Control Functions All of the four basic phases of control of manufacture are easily identified in production planning and control. The plan for the processing of materials through the plant is established by the functions of process planning, loading, and scheduling. The function of dispatching puts the plan into effect; that is, operations are started in accordance with the plant. Actual performance is then compared to the planned performance, and, when required, corrective action is taken. In some instances...

...TPV1 – CHAPTER 3 Management’s job is to support the vision of the company. Their role is to cut costs, increase productivity, increase revenues, and ensure that the requirements of upper management are met. Functional organizations are fairly common. These types of organizations are segmented by departments and their “functions. * In a true functional environment, all team members, including the project manager, report to their functional manager. * Project managers are sometimes simply called project coordinators or expeditors in a functional structure. A matrix organization model allows a project team to incorporate resources from around the organization regardless of which department employees may work in. * Weak matrix The functional managers have autonomy and power over the project team members. * Balanced The project manager and the functional manager have equal power and autonomy over the project team. * Strong matrix The project manager has autonomy over the project and the project team. Working in a Projectized Organization - In this structure the project manager works with complete autonomy over the project. The project team is on the project full-time and reports only to the project manager. Presenting the Project to Management * When you begin a presentation, you want to capture your audience’s attention. You want to hook them and reel them into your project idea. One of the most effective ways to do this is to start at the end. Tell your...
