The number of semi-automatic pistols produced in the United States in 2010 was 1,868,258. The number of revolvers produced was 547,195. In 2011, Michigan sold 2,453 semi-automatic pistols and 1,039 revolvers. With the sale numbers more than 2 to 1 in most states you would think that the wise choice for the consumer would be semi-automatic pistols. I believe this is not true and for most people, they are making a bad choice in pistols. The facts show that revolvers are a far more superior pistol than a semi-auto because they are far more dependable, accurate, and powerful. Whether you are hunting dangerous game or using a pistol for personal protection. A revolver will never fail to fire unless it is unloaded or all the ammo has been fired. On the other hand, all semi-automatic pistols jam and fail to fire, regardless of manufacturer or the highest of quality. There are numerous mechanical levers and springs that all have to be timed properly and all have to work just right for a semi-auto to fire. With all these mechanical devises moving at a very rapid speed every single time a semi-auto is fired there is also a lot of wear happening. For example the 20lb. recoil spring or any spring for that matter when compressed and/or stretched hundreds or thousands of times at an extremely fast speed lose their strength. Worn out parts equals’ failure. People I know that shoot their semi-automatic pistols a lot replace many parts every year such as the recoil spring attempting to get some kind of reliability out of their pistols. There are only 3 moving parts in a revolver and even when severely worn it will still fire. Wyatt Earp and Jesse James revolvers would reliably still shoot today even though they are hundreds of years old and with the reputation these men carry, I would bet they are severely worn. When it comes to personal protection there is no more dependable pistol to carry than a revolver.
With a lot of training you could proficiently use either pistol but FBI and Michigan State Police facts show that in a crisis situation, all of your motor skills and clear thinking go out the window. Physically a human body goes through many changes when faced with a life threatening situation; it’s a type of adrenaline. Your eyes naturally will dilate for more focused sight; your blood naturally drains from all your extremities to flood your core and organs with blood. It is a natural defensive mechanism that all humans have. Facts show that most people cannot even dial 911 clearly while in a panicked state. I have a friend that was rear ended multiple times by a drunk driver while driving down the highway. He attempted to dial 911 multiple times and never got it right. He said, “I mentally did not have the control to dial 911, I could not do it, which added to my panic”. He eventually got it right after seven tries. If you are unable to use a cell phone to push 3 numbers correctly, how do you think you will perform with a pistol under duress? A semi-auto has many gadgets and levers that need to be activated in order to shoot. Safety levers, decoking levers, magazine release button, slide release button. A revolver just has a trigger. A revolver can be shot from inside a pocket or a purse multiple times without jamming where a semi-auto cannot because of the moving slide. All semi-autos have a minimum of a 20lb. recoil spring that is depress when the slide is engaged. This slide action has to be done just to shoot some semi-autos and for all semi-autos after reloading. It is an impossible feat to accomplish for most women and even men when posed with a threatening situation. It is mechanically impossible for a revolver to jam simply because there are no moving parts while it fires and its simplistic design containing only three parts. When the situation demands it, and you have lost all you motor skills I would prefer a revolver where all I have to do is pull the trigger. A semi-auto allows the shooter to shoot faster and with more bullets but when it comes to accuracy this only allows you to miss the target more times in a shorter amount of time. Hitting a man sized target every time at 50 yards is a hard thing to do with a semi-auto pistol; in fact it is very demanding to keep all shots in a paper plate sized target at 25 yards. A semi-auto by design can’t hold accuracy at those distances. A revolver can easily keep all shots in a paper plate sized target well out to 100 yards with ease. Simple technology tells us that a moving semi-auto action is not as accurate as a locked up action. Look at a semi-auto rifle verses a bolt action rifle; the same is true for pistols. Semi-autos do nothing but boast record sales for the ammo manufacturers and a slump in sales for the target manufactures. You can mount a scope onto a revolver for an even higher amount of accuracy but cannot on a semi-auto because of the moving slide. Because of all the moving mechanical parts in a semi-automatic pistol the barrel must be kept very short. Some compact semi-autos only have a 1” to 1.5” length barrel which impedes accuracy. With revolvers, it is not uncommon to see barrels range from 3 up to 12 inches in length which gives us a longer sight radius equaling more accuracy. Common knowledge tells us that a longer barrel length allows the bullet passing through it to perform better, again adding to accuracy. Because of the lack of many moving parts such as the semi-auto, the revolvers frame is allowed to be thicker and more stout, which allows a much higher chamber pressures. More pressure equals more power. This increased allowance of pressure offers the manufactures a wide range of very powerful calibers to offer in the revolver that it can’t offer in the semi-auto. There are literally hundreds of bullet choices for the pistol enthusiast if shooting a revolver and only commonly about seven choices for the semi-auto shooter. You can shoot anything from .22 Long Rifle to the enormous .500 Smith & Wesson in a revolver. The semi-auto pistol is very picky about bullet choice. With the inherently short barrel ammo is a very important choice if you want any kind of accuracy. Also with the semi-auto, bullet nose design is very important, commonly causing a feeding jam if it is not a round nosed design. There is no feeding problem with the revolver; you just drop the bullets into the holes in the cylinder when loading. There are many revolvers that carry dual rolls. The .357 Magnum carries a powerful punch for a small caliber and can also shoot .38 special ammo which is a lot less powerful and more enjoyable to shoot. A .44 Magnum revolver can shoot any one of a half dozen .400 caliber sized bullets. The huge .460 Smith & Wesson can shoot many bullets, .45 APC, .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull, and .410 gauge shot gun shell. You could never ever do this with any semi-auto because they are all chambered for a specific caliber. Dual roll pistols make a great purchase because you don’t have to buy separate pistols for separate duties. My wife loves shooting my .357 Magnum revolver with cheaper .38 Special ammo, plinking on a day at the range. But on the same day I can load it with some very accurate .357 Magnum Hornady ammo and go deer hunting. I believe that most people are lazy gun shoppers. I think most Americans shop by advertising they see on TV or in magazines. I also believe we are lazy because most people buy semi-automatic pistols but don’t get any further training to be proficient with them. Who wants to put hours of training into something that is supposed to be fun. The problem comes when the hobbyist pistol shooter does not know how to clear a jam at the range. Because of an inadequate amount of training and the regular occurrance of a jammed bullet in a semi-auto, I commonly see people actually looking into the end of the barrel trying to see what the problem is. An associated problem with jamming arises when the semi-auto shooter wants to go hunting and can’t find flat nosed or hollow point hunting ammo that will function in their pistol. Flat nosed or hollow point bullets are required for hunting because of the engineered deformation or mushrooming that occurs when the bullet contacts flesh, resulting in more tissue and organ damage allowing a quick clean kill. Semi-autos perform more dependably with round nosed bullets because of the curved ramping surface that feeds the next bullet from the magazine up into the chamber. A round nosed bullet assists this feeding while riding the ramp to the chamber but do not deform when hitting flesh making it an unlikely choice for hunting. Also round nosed bullets are manufactured for target practice, it doesn’t take a lot of power to poke a hole in a paper target, they are not made powerful enough to take down a large animal. It takes a lot of time and money test firing hunting ammo trying to find a hunting bullet design that functions reliably in a semi-automatic pistol. The dangerous problem really shows its ugly face when the hobby shooter now wants to protect themselves with their semi-automatic pistol and get just enough training to be licensed to do so. They still might wind up dead or, God forbid, shoot someone they never intended on because of the lack of training, giving them control, and accuracy. Plus, it’s pretty hard to protect yourself with a pistol that fails to fire. There is such a long list of things that can go wrong with a semi-automatic pistol which can cause it to not fire that the sales numbers really surprise me. Pretty hard to beat the revolver, simplicity in its purest form, just pull the trigger.

...Pistol or Revolver Mark Cartwright ENG 121, English Composition I Instructor Lisa Tietler June 04, 2012 Semi-Automatic Pistol or Revolver With more states issuing “right to carry” weapons permits and the expansion of the firearms market; people are looking at semi-automatic pistols or revolvers in order to fill their concealed carry defensive needs. Both firearm platforms are made for protection purposes, but each one has their limitations and advantages. Citizens consider many aspects when choosing a handgun for defensive purposes such as ammunition capacity, ease of operation, reliability, and conceal ability. Many factors affect people when choosing a handgun for defensive use, but in the end it comes down to personal preference, the mission intended for the firearm, and skill level of the person when deciding on whether to pick a semi-automatic pistol or revolver for concealed carry. Semi-automatic pistols tend to hold more ammunition than a revolver. Most semi-automatic pistols carry anywhere from six rounds to eighteen rounds, whereas, a revolver usually carries anywhere from five rounds to eight rounds depending on the model. Semi-automatic pistols have replaced most revolvers in the inventories of police departments and military units due to issues concerning magazine capacity. Most individuals tend to go towards a semi-automatic pistol due to the amount of firepower that can be brought to a gun fight versus a revolver. However, revolvers are regarded...

...the class may need? Do you think adding a shooting portion to the class would violate the 2nd amendment if they do not pass the shooting portion of the class? REASONING BEHIND THE QUESTIONS: I think that people should learn how to shot before they are allowed to carry and hand gun and potentially use to and hurt themselves or an innocent bystander. ATICIPATED RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS: I think he’ll think that shooting should be part of the course and that it will not violate the 2nd amendment if they don’t pass the shooting portion. SECONDARY QUESTIONS: Do you think you should have to qualify with a hand gun before you get your carry and conceal permit? Should they shoot several different types of hand guns like a semi-automatic and revolver so they know how to handle both? Or do you think that learning to shoot properly should be an elective class that should be offered by the state? Answers: shooting should be part of the classes. We need to be able to go to a range and shot so we can get comfortable shooting and know the right way to shoot a handgun. I don’t think it will because everyone that wants to carry has the opportunity to as long as they show they can handle the hand gun properly, and it not...

Can your home-defense gun be loaded and quickly accessible, yet still be safe? Our handgun editor says "Yes!" and offers several proven strategies. Guns Magazine , Jan 1, 2002, by Massad Ayoob If you keep a gun in your home or workplace, it's only common sense that it be loaded and quickly accessible. The same common sense, however, also tells us the firearm should be inaccessible to children, incompetent adults and unlawful intruders. Having both at once is a tall order, but that doesn't make it impossible. Let's look at a broad spectrum of armed citizens and police officers in this country who have found that when it comes to this important matter -- you can have your cake and eat it too. In The Home John is a detective and gunfight winner who works for a large, West Coast jaw-enforcement agency that serves a very high-crime community. He has investigated a number of violent home invasions, many of which had tragically fatal results. Though most of these were "drug dealer invading and ripping off rival dealer" situations, a disturbing number involved innocent, law-abiding citizens who were helpless once their doors were kicked in. When John gets dressed for work in the...

Eleanor Rigby

...Professor Wilson September 6, 2015 “Eleanor Rigby” This song was written for many purposes in my opinion. I can see numerous themes as I read through the lyrics. The first theme that I noticed is the literal meaning. I could evaluate this from the very first line of the song. It states, “ah look at all the lonely people” (Beatles). Literally, I interpret this as meaning that there are many lonely people in this world. People who have no one to share their lives with but also people who choose to keep all their feelings inside of them. These lonely people shelter themselves from others emotionally and won’t let anyone get the chance to know them. I have seen this quite often growing up. I feel as if The Beatles may have been referring to both of these types of people: physically alone and emotionally drawn people. I believe that there are more meanings to the lyrics in this song though. I can see this song referring to religion as well. This song states that, “Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear no one comes near” and “no one was saved” (Beatles). I feel as if a powerful message is said here to the religious listeners of this song. Do I think this song is attacking the religious values of some? That might possibly be the case, however, I can see the argument in an array of spectrums. Lastly, a theme that stood out to me is when the song stated, “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door” (Beatles). I think that some people...

Argumentative Analysis: 30-30 Ballistics

... Anyone who likes cowboy movies or has family that are into western design items or cowboy actors has seen a Winchester 1894 and Marlin Model 336 chambered in .30-30. My father absolutely loved cowboy movies and one thing that stuck out to me growing up was seeing a huge difference between soldiers struggling to load muzzleloaders and then seeing cowboys laying waste to people due to a lever action rifle. What makes the Winchester .30-30 so special is not only being Americas 1st; small bore, smokeless, centerfire, jacketed cartridge but, it also offers the additional advantages of; more velocity, increased yardage, flatter trajectory and easier weapon maintenance. Smaller rounds could be utilized giving soldiers extra ammunition capability. Smokeless powder is more powerful and allows for a smaller caliber to be utilized at extended ranges and it hides the shooters position. Smokeless powder is a combination of; Sulphur, saltpeter, charcoal and is regulated by grain size. Although some were slow to see the immediate advantages, popularity slowly grew. The French shocked people when they developed this propellant in 1886 for the 8mm Lebel smokeless cartridge but by 1888 Germany had their own 8x57 Mauser, the British had their .303 and America had .30-40 Krag. This also prompted the need for new weapons to handle the pressure of the burn rates. Although soldiers saw the clear advantages of smaller grain projectiles, reloadable cartridges, and faster engagements, some civilians...

S & W And Glock Comparison Essay

... Glock and S&W have long been competitors in the pistol market. Both companies have fought ademently to outsell the other. This fued even escalted to a patent lawsuit, which ruled in favor of Glock. Both the S&W and the Glock are plastic framed pistols, both use the same configuration, and for this comparisson, both are chambered in 40S&W. The Glock 22 was first released in 1990 while the S&W MP40 was first released in 2005. While the Glock has a lead in market age in this particular comparrison, S&W is a long trusted Amercan company that originated long before Glock ever came to be. For those who like to customize thier pistols, aftermarket availability is an importent concern. In the current aftermarket, availability for Glock parts and accessories greatly exceeds that of S&W, and while this is most likely due to the age of the Glock 22 it is certainly an attribute to be aware of. For my project, I will be comparing some basic differences and similarites of the Glock 22 and S&W MP40. In the statistical department, such as magazine capacity, barrel length, weight, and dimensions, the two pistols are nearly identical. One of the primary physical differences of the pistols is that the S&W has a safety switch while the Glock does not. In the testing that I completed for this project I was able to reveal that both pistols shoot at nearly identical velocities, varying by an average of only 1fps. In the accuracy portion of my testing, I shot 10 rounds for score at 20 feet. The...

John Lennon

...British songwriters, musicians, producers, arrangers, actors, and filmmakers. Lennon and McCartney were the chief writers for the Beatles, the rock quartet by whose success all other groups are now measured. Without formal musical training, they created music that had universal appeal, yet was sophisticated enough to be appreciated by musical scholars. They expanded the boundaries of popular music, gave it respectability, and helped to bring it, both artistically and commercially, to its present state. The Beatles played a major role in defining the cultural climate of the sixties. From their hair and clothing to their interests in drugs and meditation, young people emulated them and their lifestyles. The Beatles achieved an uncanny balance of personality and talent, with each member of the group (which also included George Harrison and Ringo Starr) strongly individual as well as complementary to the others. Their music reflected this diversity: Lennon wrote songs that were often rebellious, aggressive, and satirical; McCartney's were lyrical, sweeter, and more sentimental. As songwriters, the difference in their natures seemed to aid in the success of their collaborations as each complemented the other's writing style. Later Harrison also became a composer, and his works most often reflected his interest in Eastern music and mystical thought. The Beatles, along with Bob Dylan, are considered responsible for renewing an interest in the power of words to the listening audience...

Marcus Sedgwick's Revolver: An Analysis

...Having knowledge is essential in everyday life. In the case of Marcus Sedgwick’s novel Revolver, having knowledge drove the characters’ actions, and ultimately saved their lives. This importance of wisdom is also evident in the article “The Age of Enlightenment,” which discusses the history of humans learning more about our existence and the world in general. Although the Age of Enlightenment occurred many years ago, it has a lasting effect on today’s society and is still prevalent in current news. The theme of the necessity of having wisdom is present in Revolver and is also seen in the mindset of the Enlightenment thinkers. Knowledge is always important to have, in any situation. It was paramount for Sig to have knowledge, especially of guns, during his experience with Wolff. He learned this view from his father, when Einar passed on his personal wisdom to Sig on their sacred Wash Days. After Einar’s death, Sig “was reminded of his father, who would always say, ‘Know what you can. Know everything you can know’” (Sedgwick 17). Einar’s advice to Sig proved true when a piece of knowledge Einar had shared with him saved...

Edgar Allen Poe's Impact On American Culture

...During the years of 1800-1870 Americans experienced game-changing advancements. The poem by Poe shows how the era had developed by giving an example of how fast the times were changing: “a poem may be improperly brief”. For example, Americans experienced the “The American Renaissance” which was the first flowering of the American culture. Americans also faced improved transportation that went along with the doubling of our nation's size (“A growing Nation…” 210-220). An important person living during this era was Edgar Allen Poe because he had changed an entire genre of writing. Furthermore, one invention that affected Americans was the colt revolver. It enabled Americans to protect themselves. Lastly, an event that had a major impact at the...

Violence in Literature

...Violence in Literature Jesse Weld 20 June 2012 World Literature II Maybee South University   Violence is a apart of literature just as it is a part of our lives. Violence in literature is a story about our lives. Authors write about violence because it is inevitable in life. Authors are human just like us. So naturally, by reading literature violence is going to appear. Humans are only bound by their imagination as to how violent we can get. This is why violence is so prevalent inside the literature we read, because it is synonymous with our lives. We have to either see, hear, or talk about violence everyday of our lives. Literature reveals the types of violence that is experienced throughout time. Different periods of time have different views and tactics about violence. Now, in the twenty-first century technology has changed the way violence is executed. Literature has evolved along with the violence throughout time. When violence in literature changes so does violence in reality. Sometimes reality is recorded in literature as like a violence timeline. This tells people how and why violence changes or evolves into how we view violence today. Society changes towards more civilized people. No longer are there events like public hangings, decapitation, and showdowns. I know there are some cultures still may execute these events, but not very likely in the twenty-first century. In “Candide,” by Voltaire, the human capacity for violence is inspired...

A black guy named William Sidlayi asks for work, but instead Lillian just donates a five rand coin to him. He insists to work for the money, and somehow he persuades Lillian, to let him rake the leaves. After finishing his work in the garden he claims that the five rand was a donation, and that Lillian owes him 10 rand for the work. Lillian refuses, and at that point she realizes that the only thing between her safety, and his will was the two dogs. She sets the dogs on him, and in the meantime she finds Jock’s revolver. She forces William out of her premises and warns him that she will pull the trigger next time. In the evening she places the revolver under Jock’s pillow, and cries herself to sleep. The setting in the story is very dynamic, as it takes place in South Africa just after apartheid. Apartheid was a time with racial segregation between blacks and whites. The whites lived rich and wealthy in big houses, while blacks lived poorly in townships. Besides that the apartheid regime ruled over a lot of strict laws. This caused a lot of crime, which still haven’t been solved. As said before Lillian is an elderly wealthy woman, who lives in a house with her two dogs, Tembi and Tor.
