'Rhetorical Analysis Of Against Headphones'

Submitted By
Words 272

In the article “Against Headphones” appearing in The New York Times on January 7, 201l, Virginia Heffernan argues her stance on headphones related to hearing loss. Virginia believes headphone use should be reduced because of the potential impacts they have on hearing. She wrote this article to inform parents what their children’s earphones could be doing to their health, stating “And protecting our kids’ hearing is not just as important as protecting their brains; it is protecting their brains.” Her use of the word “our” shows her intended audience as well as why she wrote the article. She wants to inform fellow parents of the dangers of headphones. This argument is successful because of her tailored rhetoric to her indented audience. Parents

Ipod Project

...Chapter 1: Introduction This project is undertaken to find out the pre-purchase and post-purchase behaviour of iPod users in the consumer market. Consumer behaviour includes the actions a person takes in purchasing and using products and services, including the mental and social processes that precede and follow these actions. The pre-purchase behaviour is determined by the expectation a customer develops in his/her mind before purchasing a product. Pre-purchase behaviour depends on various factors like 1) Financial stability of the customer 2) Reach by material which may be competition from the products of the same range like mobile, digital camera or by people, basically the peer factor.3) Advertisement 4) Competitive Advantage 5) Past experience buying from the seller. Post-Purchase behaviour is defined when after purchasing a product, the customer compares the product with the expectations he had developed in his mind about the product before buying, whether he is satisfied or unsatisfied with the product. Satisfaction or unsatisfaction affects consumer value perception. Post-purchase behaviour depends on various factors like 1) Easy to handle 2) Lack of Performance 3) Frequency of use. The six stages of consumer buying process will be included in determining the post-purchase behaviour of iPod. They are 1) Need Recognition 2) Information Search 3) Evaluation of Alternatives 4) Purchase Decision 5) Purchase 6) Post Purchase behaviour. 1.1 What is iPod iPod is a...

...NOTE: This PDF document has a handy set of “bookmarks” for it, which are accessible by pressing the Bookmarks tab on the left side of this window. ***************************************************** We are the last. The last generation to be unaugmented. The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. ...THE B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers...

...animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values. Walter Isaacson, the CEO...

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
