Holden narrates numerous actions he does that relate to the emotions present-day teenagers feel. Specifically, while Holden is on his date with Sally, they talk about their lives in recent times, as well as what comes with being a teenager. The conversation ends with Sally leaving, for she believes Holden is crazy, as he explains how they could run away together. Holden presents the idea, that both of them escape together. He describes how they would “live somewhere with a brook and all and, later on, we could get married or something” (132, Salinger). After talking with numerous people throughout his trip, Holden is faced with countless responsibilities. Although, instead of facing them, he thinks of the idea to completely run away from all

...However, Holden gives out a very paradoxical message, because his actions do not always reflect his thoughts. This paradox can be exemplified when Holden illustrates to Sally the perfectly conformed life that they could live stereotypically based on the gender roles in society at the time (Catcher 147-148). Holden explains that they can “[ride] to work in cabs and Madison Avenue buses, and [read] newspapers, and [play] bridge all the time, and [go] to moves and [see] a lot of stupid shorts and coming attractions and newsreels” (Catcher 148). As exemplified in the quote, Holden’s internal conflict is never truly resolved due to the lack of a solid resolution. He struggles maintain the unique exterior façade he has created to mask the truly normal problems he faces in his life. Holden does not fit the societal definition of the high-class teenager many assume him to be. Presumably, he is articling his story in a mental health home subsequent to his time in New York. Holden at many times embodies the opposite of his societal...

Catcher In The Rye Rhetorical Analysis

...Adolescence is a time of development, often characterized by a desire to understand society while struggling to leave childhood. Holden Caulfield is a troubled character who regularly finds conflict with others and himself during adolescence. In The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger argues that Holden struggles to complete the transition from childhood to adulthood, yet never fully completes that transition. This is displayed through his childish behavior, immature language, and enduring symbols. Salinger uses Holden’s childish character to display his attachment to childhood. Holden is expelled at every school that he goes to, which in turn creates a negative feeling towards education. Despite Penceys reputation for molding boys into men,...

Catcher In The Rye Rhetorical Analysis

...Anthony Cann English Hour 1 The Catcher in the Rye Term Paper The story was full of pain, suffering, and above all, just a dark story in general but it was covered up by making it humorous which made it a way better story. So the main character of the story is Holden Caulfield, the man with the depression and all the sadness and darkness surrounding him. Holden was suffering from so many consequences like depression, anxiety, and was trying to be suicidal but the tone of how that was represented changed since it was brought to the reader as a funny tone instead of a dark and depressing tone. He needed therapy to deal with the thought of his early life that only mentioned his brother D.B. who was a Hollywood writer, and with bringing that statement...

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Catcher In The Rye

...Immediately setting his tone for the whole story, Holden foreshadows the series of events he will be talking about and makes an allusion towards his opinion on them, suggesting that the events that took place might come off as dramatic and emotional. Yet he takes back the whole statement claiming "he doesn't feel like it", giving his character an attribute of laziness or carelessness as expressed through out the story and often shows itself in external or even internal conflicts. A saying told to Holden referring to how life has certain rules that you need to follow in order to win or become successful. By mentioning this quote it might suggest that Holden might not be following the rules of the game and isn't on the track to success according to how he compares to other students at his school. Holden agrees with life being a game, but tries to explain how there wouldn't be a game if there weren't any good players playing, making it competition less with no one to compare to or set the bar. The passage is written with short sentences and - markings to speed up the pacing and add a tone of frustration and anger, as if he didn't think it was fair, making himself feel alienated from the rest. The author also uses the - markings to add to the concessions and refutations in this passage that turn it into a valid argument of Holden's opinion. Although Holden doesn't like his school very much, leaving might be worse for him due to the failure and disappointment of his parents that come...

Rhetorical Terms/Devices

...Rhetorical Terms/Devices Figurative language is the generic term for any artful deviation from the ordinary mode of speaking or writing. It is what makes up a writer’s style – how he or she uses language. The general thinking is that we are more likely to be persuaded by rhetoric that is interesting, even artful, rather than mundane. When John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (an example of anastrophe), it was more interesting – and more persuasive – than the simpler, “Don’t be selfish.” Indeed, politicians and pundits use these devices to achieve their desired effect on the reader or listener nearly every time they speak. The stylistic elements in a piece of writing work to produce a desired effect related to the text’s (and author’s) purpose, and thus reveals the rhetorical situation. In classical rhetoric, figures of speech are divided into two main groups: Schemes — Deviation from the ordinary pattern or arrangement of words (transference of order). Tropes — Deviation from the ordinary and principal meaning of a word (transference of meaning). *Important Note: Words marked with an asterisk* are words for which it would be impossible for you to write 3 examples for your weekly vocabulary assignment. In those cases, please write only the definition, in your own words, and the rhetorical uses/effect of that device, or do what you are instructed to do under those words. Please mark these words that deviate...
