Rhetorical Analysis Of The Film 'Girl Rising'

In the documentary Girl Rising, Richard Robbins chronicles the lives of nine different women from around the globe. These nine women, Sokha, Wadley, Suma, Yasmin, Asmera, Ruksana, Senna, Mariama, and Amina, are from different countries, but they all share the same goal: education. Each girl has a different obstacle in her life preventing her from achieving her dream. Lack of substantial schooling is a problem affecting women throughout the world, and these nine women provide a snapshot of those issues. Through rhetorical choices, Robbins presents their stories of hardship, hope, and triumph. Richard Robbins argues that educating women will break cycles of poverty in developing countries.

One of the featured girls, Sokha, is an orphan from Cambodia. She was forced to pick through garbage to survive her abandonment. Robbins displays the landfill mountain in dreary colors of blue and gray. The colors reflect the pollution and smoke that surround the pile (Girl Rising). By using sad colors, Robbins creates a gloomy image in the viewer’s mind. This bleak imagery evokes a feeling of sympathy towards Sokha who has to endure that poverty. The audience associates dull colors with grim situations, so they feel compelled to rescue Sokha from those circumstances. Robbins argues that education would prevent this extreme form of beggary and help Sokha acquire the skills necessary to build a future for herself. Another example of dismal imagery is used in Senna’s story. Senna lives and works in the mining town of La Rinconada, Peru. Her whole segment is filmed in black and white, and there are numerous images of the muddy and dusty mines (Girl Rising). These depressing depictions and colors elicit outrage in the audience. Viewers feel angry because they see the mines in a negative light. By antagonizing Senna’s current lifestyle, Robbins makes the audience want to stop these unfair employment conditions. Robbins argues that Senna and women like her should not be forced into labor at such a young age; instead, they should go to school.
