In his New York Times essay, “Where Sweatshops are a Dream,” writer Nicholas Kristof uses the beginning talks on labor standards between President Obama and his team to expose the dark side of extremely poor nations—sweatshops being dream jobs. Kristof explains to his readers why taking away sweatshops from undeveloped nations would lead to destroying the one of the few ways out of poverty and deplorable living situations. His first goal is to establish that sweatshops are an “escalator out of poverty.” His second goal is to educate his audience on what improving labor standards would equate for these poor nations. By establishing ethos, and appealing to both logic and emotions, Kristoff succeeds in writing an interesting and informative …show more content…
Pathos is the appeal to the emotions. First, the audience is captivated by the description of the toxic burning garbage dump that these families have to live in due to poverty. Not only are these families living in a garbage dump, but they are sending their children out to collect recyclable goods in bulk that can only be sold for pennies on the dollar (Kristoff 109). In America if the police found out of this behavior, child protective services would take these children away from their parents. It wouldn’t end there, the parents would be taken to jail for abuse and endangering the lives of their children. Nonetheless, multiple kids have been killed via being run over by garbage trucks in these dumps.
Additionally, Kristof uses ethos. Ethos is the character and credibility of a person. Kristof explains that his views are shaped by his years living in East Asia, through observing the living standards rise through the use of sweat shop jobs (110). Here he shows that he has real life experience of his argument. He also demonstrates ethos by showing he is open-minded. He takes into account the audiences’ views that have not experienced or seen first-hand the benefits of what a sweatshop is capable of doing to a poverty stricken

Where Sweatshops Are a Dream

...Rhetorical Analysis “Where Sweatshops Are A Dream” In his New York Times opinion column, “Where Sweatshops Are a Dream”, writer Nicholas D. Kristof uses his experience living in East Asia to argue his positive outlook on sweatshops. Kristof wants to persuade his audience, Obama and his team, along with others who are for “labor standards”, that the best way to help people in poor countries is to promote manufacturing there, not campaign against them. He uses Phnom Penh as an example to show why working in the sweatshops is a dream for the families there. They would rather work at a sweatshop than stay in the dangerous garbage dump, searching for something to recycle for change. The writer establishes credibility through his experience living in East Asia and witnessing the living standards improve from sweatshop jobs. That growth included his wife’s ancestral village in Southern China. Kristof succeeds in writing an informative and interesting argument on the positive outlook on sweatshop jobs and how they are a dream to families of Phnom Penh. In Kristof’s argument he presented testimonies of women and children of Phnom Penh, this created effective evidence. These following quotes are from his discussion with some of the women he met while in East Asia. The First was a 19-year-old woman who was scavenging for plastic in the garbage dump. “I’d love to get a job in a factory” she said, “at least that work is in the shade. Here is where it’s hot” (Paragraph 6, pg. 110). Another...

Study Habits

.... Organization Theory Challenges and Perspectives John McAuley, Joanne Duberley and Phil Johnson . This book is, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive and reliable guide to organisational theory currently available. What is needed is a text that will give a good idea of the breadth and complexity of this important subject, and this is precisely what McAuley, Duberley and Johnson have provided. They have done some sterling service in bringing together the very diverse strands of work that today qualify as constituting the subject of organisational theory. Whilst their writing is accessible and engaging, their approach is scholarly and serious. It is so easy for students (and indeed others who should know better) to trivialize this very problematic and challenging subject. This is not the case with the present book. This is a book that deserves to achieve a wide readership. Professor Stephen Ackroyd, Lancaster University, UK This new textbook usefully situates organization theory within the scholarly debates on modernism and postmodernism, and provides an advanced introduction to the heterogeneous study of organizations, including chapters on phenomenology, critical theory and psychoanalysis. Like all good textbooks, the book is accessible, well researched and readers are encouraged to view chapters as a starting point for getting to grips with the field of organization theory. Dr Martin Brigham, Lancaster University, UK McAuley et al. provide a highly readable account...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
