When he’s not reviewing news stories at the Staten Island Advance, cheerful journalist, Rich Ryan can be found in front of his computer screen working on his next book.
An avid reader and writer, Ryan’s passion for writing derives from his love of Sherlock Holmes. Thirty years ago Ryan published his first book, “The Official Sherlock Holmes Trivia Book,” paying homage to his favorite childhood detective. “I have always liked Sherlock Holmes,” Ryan explains enthusiastically. “Sherlock seems to be everywhere lately.”
With hopes of getting fans to venture back to the original Sherlock Holmes novels and television series, Ryan continuously focuses his writing on Holmes.
Due out this coming November is Ryan’s next novel, “The Vatican Cameos: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure,” …show more content…
“When I first whent to Notre Dame I couldn’t write,” stated a brutally honest Ryan. “The first paper I wrote wasn’t very good.”
“The best thing you can do to become a better a better writer is to read,” shared Ryan when discussing how his writing improved over the years.
Ryan began his career as a freelancer, writing theatre and restaurant reviews. He later worked at Moore Catholic High School and St. Peters Boys High School where he was a teacher before being hired as a weekend arts editor for the Staten Island Advance in 1989, where he continues to work today as the new publications manager and former news editor. However, it wasn’t until he was in his 60s that Ryan began writing books.
For Ryan, the writing process is never easy. “I hate to write,” explains Ryan. “There’s nothing worse than sitting down looking at a blank computer screen, knowing you have to find something to write.”
To make writing easier, Ryan thinks of writing as an alternative voice. “Really all you’re doing is talking to a reader,” says Ryan. “The only drawback is the reader is not talking

...Direct Instruction Vs. Constructivist Instruction [pic] Wingate University ED 530 It is important that educators and parents understand the methods used to effectively educate each student and how they impact student learning. To relay the importance of direct instruction, I would introduce the instructional model as described by the National Institute of Direct Instruction. According to the National Institute of Direct Instruction, “Direct Instruction (DI) is a model for teaching that emphasizes well-developed and carefully planned lessons designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and prescribed teaching tasks (http://www.nifdi.org/).” I would describe how direct instruction is a method of teaching considered most effective by various researchers. I would explain how the direct instruction model utilized in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system (CMS) allows students to learn more in less time. To demonstrate the direction instruction model, I would provide parents an opportunity to review the lesson plan format (Appendix 1) as prepared by CMS. Parents will be directed to notice how classes are structured to allow for: link to prior learning, teacher modeling, guided practice, independent practice, closure, and student assessments. Each of these items will be broken down using research based information to explain the break down of learning into smaller increments (Appendix 2) for the direct instruction model. Parents...

C. 1999 2 3 How to Use this Complex Course Частные уроки Английского Языка 387-1231 MIND Speaks to MIND – Selected American Essays 4 Preface Some years ago, a visitor to our office, a professor of English at a large foreign university, asked if the English Language Programs Division had published a book of American essays for foreign students – especially students at the advanced level. Having to respond in the negative, I was, nonetheless, “intrigued” by the idea of a collection of essays that would form a source of stimulating ideas or thoughts that could be thoroughly examined in the EFL classroom, discussed and debated in free conversation, and perhaps, ultimately, lead to a significant growth in the exchange of information between cultures – via the printed page. From this rationale, then, there issues an explanation for the title, Mind Speaks to Mind, which itself is an “exchange of information” between the editor and Edward Hoagland in his essay, “On Essays”! And, readers are encouraged to study this essay first as a type of guideline concerning the nature/purpose of the essay. It is found on page 26. ...Marlon Brando, the Mafia boss is sitting in the study of his home. Along with his consigliore, or adviser, Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), Corleone is listening to a line of people requesting favors on the day of his daughter’s wedding. Corleone is immensely powerful, as we learn by the scope of the favors he is asked to grant, which in one case includes the desire of a singer to be cast in a film to revive his musical career, and Corleone’s ability to grant them. However, it is not just what Corleone says in the scene, which introduces us to all that will follow, that makes us aware of his power. It is also how the scene looks, how it is shot, and how color and light are combined that give The Godfather such an immediately distinctive feel. The rich hues, the closed blinds, the placing of Corleone behind the desk, a traditional seat of power, tell us that this is a man in...

Much current work in this area emphasizes identity as one key aspect of sexuality. However, recent critiques of identity-based research advocate instead a desire-centered view of sexuality. Such an approach artificially restricts the scope of the field by overlooking the close relationship between identity and desire. This connection emerges clearly in queer linguistics, an approach to language and sexuality that incorporates insights from feminist, queer, and sociolinguistic theories to analyze sexuality as a broad sociocultural phenomenon. These intellectual approaches have shown that research on identity, sexual or otherwise, is most productive when the concept is understood as the outcome of intersubjectively negotiated practices and ideologies. To this end, an analytic framework for the semiotic study of social intersubjectivity is presented. (Sexuality, feminism, identity, desire, queer linguistics.)* I N T R O D U C T I O N Within the past decade the field of language...
