November 5, 2015 Serra and Rivera: Held Together by Destruction Art functions as a representation of ideas that reflect on the public. “ To remove the work is to destroy it ” according to the famous Richard Serra as he defends his piece, Tilted Arc. Art Controversies are ubiquitous in American Society, especially when the art function is mismatched with the audience. Diego Rivera’s Man at the Crossroads and Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc questioned the validity of destroying artwork as well as the process by which art can be canceled. Both differ in the form, artist’s intent, and how the artist defended their rights. Located in front of the Jacob Javitis federal plaza, Richard Serra’s …show more content…
Paid for by Nelson Rockefeller, Man at the Crossroads began its installation in nineteen thirty-three at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. While Serra’s simple design featured a tilted sculpture, Rivera’s design consisted of numerous clear images of specific people, objects, and symbols. For example, there were images of cells, people watching television, and police brutality. These images are colorful and there is no ambiguity in determining the identity of them. The difference between the form of Tilted Arc and Man at the Crossroads brings attention to how different styles of art can cause similar issues in society. Both controversies were very different in how the observer perceived the art; Tilted arc was abstract while Man at the Crossroads was concrete. When he discovered the image of Lenin, he demanded the art be altered so that Lenin was not a part of the art he paid for. When Rivera refused to change the painting of Lenin, Rockefeller decided the mural was to be cancelled and eventually destroyed. Like the destruction of Tilted Arc, Man at Crossroads was demolished. Without regard for the public’s direct choice, Rockefeller single handedly had the authority to demolish Rivera’s work. Although Rockfeller’s decision was legitimate because he funded the artist, it affected the public in a myriad of ways. And what kinds of policies can governments use to accelerate advances in living standards? These questions were central for those who studied growth in the 1950s and 1960s, and remain so in the recent revival of interest in long-run economic performance. Two observations have motivated many of the recent contributors to growth theory. First, output expansion has outpaced population growth in the 200 years since the industrial revolution. Second, different countries have remained on seemingly disparate growth paths for relatively long periods of time. Related to this second observation is another: in cross-section and timeseries data, we find national and regional growth rates correlated with a variety of economic, social, and political variables, including many that are affected by government policies.
