The song, 2112 (pronounced, twenty-one twelve), was written by the band, Rush. Rush is composed of three members; Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart. The band originated in Canada in the year 1974. They quickly moved to the United States where they became one of the most popular bands in their era. Alex plays the guitar, Geddy plays the keyboards and bass while singing, and Neil Peart plays his massive drum-set and writes the band’s lyrics. In 1976, Rush came out with their fourth album, 2112—this album is often referred to as “Rush’s break-through album”. This album might possibly feature Rush’s greatest song ever composed, 2112. This song is based in the year 2112, and takes place at “The Temples of Syrinx”, which is where many priests live their lives. These priests do not believe in individualism, they believe they are all equal. All the priests that live at this temple are banded together under the Red Star of the Solar Federation. One day, one of these priests finds a guitar. He learns to how to play this guitar and shows the other priests, even though guitars have been banished from the temple for decades. ...Blues Essay I chose to do my essay on Tracy Chapman’s 1996 release of “Give Me One Reason,” which can be found at the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2kEx5BLoC4. Chapman begins this duple meter song with an electric guitar solo playing the melody of the tune for one measure when her vocals join singing one complete chorus. The dynamic range of the song is minimal throughout but after the introduction of the duo guitar and vocal solo all the other instruments join in intensifying the energy of the tune while keeping the same medium paced tempo. There is a variety of timbres played in this song including the piano, bass guitar, electric guitars, drums, and tambourine. There are also female and male background vocals joining in sporadically adding to the ending of some choruses by singing either “You can see me turning” or “Why I should stay.” Halfway through the song after the melody is played about four times with the chorus sung two complete times there is an electric guitar solo for a 12-bar phrase. The homophonic texture of this tune provides the melody with a simple accompaniment of at least five different tunes. I found it difficult to listen to this song without moving my upper body back and forth, singing the words, and tapping my feet. When I first heard his name a few things popped into my mind, the royal family, the Kansas City Royals, basically he sounds like he could be famous. When you ask royal what he likes to do his story gets even better because he plays the electric guitar. He does not play in a band but he has covered for local bands whose members have been out sick. Royal says he enjoys playing with a band because of all the energy and he tends to pick up on their music pretty fast. Maybe one day he could have his own band named after him. Royal likes to play just about any kind of music but the music he enjoys listening to the music is R&B and soul.
