Hailed as the "Ace of all Aces", American Eddie Rickenbacker was a man of many incredible accomplishments. With a remarkable track record of around 135 separate close calls with the "Great Spirit in the Sky", it seemed Rickenbacker was a professional at cheating death. A product of the mechanical age of automobiles and airplanes in the early American 1900s, Rickenbacker had a large history in the beginning and development of both, due to his large interest in machines.

Edward Vernon Rickenbacher (Later changed to Rickenbacker) was born to Swiss immigrants Elizabeth and William Rickenbacher in Columbus Ohio on October 4th, 1890. As a youngster, Rickenbacker was quite troublesome. He started smoking at the age of 5, and was the head of the Horsehead …show more content…
Rickenbacker had his first ride in an aircraft while preparing for the Vanderbuilt Cup Race in California. Despite his fear of heights, avid machine junky Rickenbacker was hooked on flight from then on.

On April 6th, 1917 the U.S. joined the Allied side in WWI. Rickenbacker joined the U.S. Army and wanted to fly, but he was overage at 27 years old, and had no college degree. Rickenbacker inevitably made it to Europe as a driver for Colonel William Mitchell. Over the course of his assignment, Rickenbacker pestered Mitchel to allow him to apply for flight training, which he eventually did.

Rickenbacker graduated from flight training in only 17 days and was subsequently commissioned as a lieutenant and assigned the 94th Aero Squadron. The 94th Aero Squadron was led by Major John Huffer and based in Gengoult Aerodome near Toul, France. During his deployment he accumulated a total of 26 confirmed aerial combat victories, the most of any American pilot. After the war Rickenbacker was promoted to Major, though he only accepted the title of Captain because he felt he earned …show more content…
Rickenbacker was a staunch supporter of commercial airline flights and opposed FDR's measures to take governmental control of airmail in 1934. At Eastern, he laid the work ethic groundwork that allowed the company to become one of the four main airlines by the 50s. His automobile company proved to be a bit too advanced for the time, featuring 4 wheel brakes among other achievements. Adding low demand to the financial squeeze of the Great Depression resulted in the Rickenbacker car company going bankrupt.

During WWII, Rickenbacker was too old to fight in his 50s, but he provided support by reviewing other military groups. It was during one of these reviewing missions that Rickenbacker came the closest to death he had ever in his life. On the way back to the U.S. mainland from Hawaii, Rickenbacker and seven other military personal were lost at sea for a little over 3 weeks after their B-17 crashed after running out of fuel. Miraculously, after being given up for dead, the crew was found, and all but one survived the

2112

...Tyler Gathercoal Written Assignment 2112 November 11, 2011 This seven movement “suite” as many people would describe it, is almost 21 minutes in duration. The song, 2112 (pronounced, twenty-one twelve), was written by the band, Rush. Rush is composed of three members; Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart. The band originated in Canada in the year 1974. They quickly moved to the United States where they became one of the most popular bands in their era. Alex plays the guitar, Geddy plays the keyboards and bass while singing, and Neil Peart plays his massive drum-set and writes the band’s lyrics. In 1976, Rush came out with their fourth album, 2112—this album is often referred to as “Rush’s break-through album”. This album might possibly feature Rush’s greatest song ever composed, 2112. This song is based in the year 2112, and takes place at “The Temples of Syrinx”, which is where many priests live their lives. These priests do not believe in individualism, they believe they are all equal. All the priests that live at this temple are banded together under the Red Star of the Solar Federation. One day, one of these priests finds a guitar. He learns to how to play this guitar and shows the other priests, even though guitars have been banished from the temple for decades. The high priest thinks the guitar is evil and that it had destroyed the older generations of mankind. The high priest destroys the guitar. The 2112 album cover is seen as a red pentagram with...

Blues Essay

...Blues Essay I chose to do my essay on Tracy Chapman’s 1996 release of “Give Me One Reason,” which can be found at the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2kEx5BLoC4. Chapman begins this duple meter song with an electric guitar solo playing the melody of the tune for one measure when her vocals join singing one complete chorus. The dynamic range of the song is minimal throughout but after the introduction of the duo guitar and vocal solo all the other instruments join in intensifying the energy of the tune while keeping the same medium paced tempo. There is a variety of timbres played in this song including the piano, bass guitar, electric guitars, drums, and tambourine. There are also female and male background vocals joining in sporadically adding to the ending of some choruses by singing either “You can see me turning” or “Why I should stay.” Halfway through the song after the melody is played about four times with the chorus sung two complete times there is an electric guitar solo for a 12-bar phrase. The homophonic texture of this tune provides the melody with a simple accompaniment of at least five different tunes. I found it difficult to listen to this song without moving my upper body back and forth, singing the words, and tapping my feet. Even after taking a break from the song I would still sing the main chorus. This leads me to believe this song is most definitely program music. This song provoked me to move my body. It stimulated my response...

...Devin DeCavalcanti Speech January 14, 2015 I am here today to talk to you about someone with a very unique name, his name is Royal. When I first heard his name a few things popped into my mind, the royal family, the Kansas City Royals, basically he sounds like he could be famous. When you ask royal what he likes to do his story gets even better because he plays the electric guitar. He does not play in a band but he has covered for local bands whose members have been out sick. Royal says he enjoys playing with a band because of all the energy and he tends to pick up on their music pretty fast. Maybe one day he could have his own band named after him. Royal likes to play just about any kind of music but the music he enjoys listening to the music is R&B and soul. I like talking to him about playing the guitar because as a kid I always wanted to learn how to play, but I never accomplished that goal. Now that we have talked about what he likes to do I would like to go back and talk about his name because it really caught my attention. The word royal means having the status of a king, queen or a member of their family. If my name was Royal I would use that to my advantage and make sure everyone knew it. I never found out why his parents named him Royal but in my opinion they seem to have picked out that right name for him. With his name being one of kind I am sure he gets compliments all the time. When I first met him and asked what his name was I had to say it back to him...

Electric Counterpoint

...‘Third Movement From Electric Counterpoint’ by Steve Reich Background to Minimalism La Monte Young and Terry Riley were experimental composers who made the most of minimal musical resources to create a piece, using drones and repetition. Young wrote ‘The well Tuned Piano’ which includes improvisation and lasts for 6 hours. Riley experimented with tape loops combined with delay and instrumental sounds. Reich was part of the ensemble for the first performance of Riley’s composition ‘In C’, which repeats short musical fragments along with a constantly repeating quaver C keeping the pulse. Features of Minimalism Drones - a long continuous note or constantly repeated note Ostinato / loops - repeated musical ideas. Cells - the shortest musical ideas Phasing - two almost identical parts which go out of sync with each other and gradually, after a number of repetitions, come back into sync again Metamorphosis - gradually changing from one musical idea to another, often by changing one note at a time Layering - adding new musical parts, usually one at a time Note Addition - beginning with a simple, sparse ostinato, after a number of repetitions notes are gradually added Note Subtraction - beginning with a more complex ostinato, notes are gradually taken away Rhythmic Displacement - varying the notes to be accented in a musical phrase, or starting the same phrase in a different part of the bar [as Reich does with ‘ostinato 1’] Augmentation - Increasing the lengths of notes in...

Rks Guitars Marketing

...RKS Guitars Case Study RKS Design seeks to create or re-create products for which users will engage in more than mere consumption, but rather find senses of empowerment prompted by the use of their designs. They believe that the only way to change and deepen the consumer-product interaction is by entering the consumers’ psyche and understanding their minds. According to their Electric Guitar PA Map, the market’s most popular guitars are shown to be merely fairly interactive, with functions entailing moderate, albeit relative, engagement on the consumer’s part. It is here that we can determine RKS’ desired positioning. Indeed, in order to stand out from the current homogenized market, their aim was to design a deeply engaging, alluring and enticing guitar, technically superior and more emotionally engaging, epitomizing senses of freedom and empowerment. The RKS Guitar’s design is not only ingenious and eye-catching, but is also sonically captivating, thus creating unique meaning and value for its user. As consumers were divided into distinct segments (children and their parents, professional and aspiring players, collectors, institutions), we believe RKS’ target segments should range between collectors and professional players. Indeed, novices and hobbyists do not need nor expect the most performing guitar, but rather a more basic one. On the other hand, 30-50 years old (or more) professionals and aficionados are much more inclined to find an innovative design appealing...

Case 12.1

...come from all around the world with zero experience of working together on any projects. Although each member tries to inform other members how they are doing by sending emails, it is a sad truth that not everyone will read the emails and be interested in how their colleagues are doing. Everyone just work on their own, making the team a collection of individuals rather than a real group. Without a channel to communicate with each other, it is hard to develop a sense of unity. The frequently organized business trips and the multiple projects at once also show that there is a miscommunication between the secretary and other members. Moreover, there is no standard of excellence to regulate and guide the performance of the employees. Team accomplishment is not being recognized as well. Members thus cannot find the value of performing to the utmost and are frustrated with the heavy workload. Given the above situation, the leader seems doing nothing to handle the stressful circumstances. Base on the analysis of team effectiveness, Jim should intervene at this time at internal level, focusing on relational actions. Building team relationship for a virtual team is even more important than collocated team. As they are working across time and space together with a need of dependence, the most critical aspect to enhance team efficiency is to focus on the collaboration between members. With a sense of unity as well as the belief that individual’s performance can affect the progress of the...

Me Too Interpretation

...The song “Me Too” is the tune that I chose to be my theme song. I feel that this shows that no matter what other people think, you are a great person and should be thankful for that. Firstly, this tune represents me because no one can do anything like I do. In the melody it declares “Even if they tried to they can't do it like I do” which means I have my own ways of doings things and I am proud of that. Next, it also encourages others and myself to be more confident in doings things that make us uncomfortable. Confidence is like wearing a crown that makes you feel powerful and accepting of yourself. I like how Meghan Trainor almost talks about how she doesn't care what other people think. She and I both won't let other people bring us down....
