Rise of Mandarin
As times have changed to modernity, cultures have also evolved altogether. The increasing mix of migrants from different parts of the globe has created multi-ethnicity or multi-cultural background. In effect, it has allowed people to adjust to the different languages that are used to communicate, thus brought about the trend of being multilingual. Presently, more and more people who are monolingual are now choosing to learn a second language to be able to compete with the tight job market.
The American Teaching Council of Foreign Languages reported that the number of students learning Mandarin in traditional U.S. schools sky-rocketed from 5,000 in 2000 to about 50,000 in 2005. The growth of the popularity in learning Mandarin is not only among non-Chinese but also including the children of Chinese-Americans to finally learn how to read, write or speak Mandarin fluently. (McClatchy - Tribune Business News, 2007)
According to Tom Adams, the Chief executive of a language-education company called New Concept Mandarin, people are now focusing on where growth is coming from because of the economic crises. As China’s economy rises, so does the interest of learning Mandarin. The number of their company’s multi-lingual programme for Mandarin has increased by 1,800% between 2008 and 2010 (The Economist, 2010).
The push for Mandarin classes in the US is for students to have a greater chance in participating in the global economy. Over the last few years, the Chinese government has established 130 Confucius Institutes in 50 countries throughout the world. The objective is for them to promote Mandarin but also give a positive image to the Chinese population. (McClatchy- Tribune Business News, 2007)
Because of such fuelling expansion of Mandarin globally, we are compelled to wonder: Will Mandarin change the status of English as a global language? Although,
