...mentioned in a speech last year that Indian soldiers will soon have robots assisting them to counter terrorist attack. We are yet to hear more on that thought. The word “robot” was first used in a 1921 play titled R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots, by Czechoslovakian writer Karel Capek. Robot is a Czech word meaning “worker.” Merriam-Webster defines robot as “a machine that looks like a human being and perform various complex acts; a device that automatically performs complicated, often repetitive tasks; a mechanism guided by automatic controls.” ISO describes a robot as “an automatically controlled reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications. “ Yet, all these definition do give us a rough idea about what comprises a robot, which needs to sense the outside world and act accordingly. There are motors, pulleys, gears, gearbox, levers, chains, and many more mechanical systems, enabling locomotion. There are sound, light, magnetic field and other sensors that help the robot collect information about its environment. There are microcontrollers powered by powerful software that help the robot make sense environmental data captured and tell it what to do next. There are microphones, speakers, displays, etc that help the robot interact with humans. 1.1 Objectives The main objectives of using robot are mentioned below...

Surveillance

...Surveillance Robot HOW DO YOU BUILD YOUR OWN MICRO RC SURVEILLANCE ROBOT? Why don't I show you how?   Almost every roboticist has wanted to create a small Surveillance Robot at some point in their time. The biggest problem being the Receiver/Transmitter pairs are always too expensive. My solution: Extract the RC receiver from a small RC car and modify it for our purposes. By the end of this tutorial, you will create and modify an RC robot to do: 1. Direct Radio Control using the remote's joysticks. 2. Computer control via a microcontroller connected to the remote.   Later, I plan on making this base teleoperational. When I do, I'll be sure to document it and continue the tutorial for it!!!!!!!!!!    It will used the receiver from a $10 ZipZaps RC car purchased at a RadioShack (US) or a Microz GT car purchased at The Source (Canada). Any inexpensive RC car, though, will do. It will also use a wireless camera and 2 Solarbotics gear motors.  The main goal of this robot always remains the same; to be able to perform surveillance that you could watch on your television or on your computer (this depends on the camera used). I broke this tutorial into steps for simplicity and organization of categories (why should you put the construction of chassis with building the electronics? :P) Now for some general examples of the design for the robot (you don't have to follow my example exactly). The image at the top of the page shows an angled view of the robot. This is a...

New Communication Technologies-Short Essays

...used by previous generations or perhaps just a few years earlier. These new communication technologies certainly influence and change the way we live and manage our communication, social and business activities. One of these new communication technologies is the so-called “smart-phones”, which are the combination of cellular phones and computer based technology. “The growing capabilities of handheld devices and transmission protocols have enabled a growing number of inventive and fanciful applications—for instance, augmented reality” (Hosch Encyclopaedia Britannica2012) They incorporate a whole list of features, example touchscreen (which is almost a standard application these days) internet browser, high resolution camera, capable to take High Definition Videos apart from HD still shots, navigator, Mp3 music player, document viewer, Bluetooth, USB, alarm clock, calculator, calendar. Motion Sensing Technology

...Motion Sensing Technology Motion-sensing capability has become a boon in the gaming industry, with 90 million Nintendo Wii units sold since its 2006 introduction and over 10 million units of Microsoft’s Xbox360 Kinect peripheral sold since its winter 2010 launch, then latter having surpassed the former as the world’s fastest-selling consumer electronic device. Distinguishing Kinect from Wii is its dedication to pure, controller-less motion input, you are the controller, as the marketing slogan goes. One of the key aspects of Kinect that has generated much excitement is its promotion of the natural user interface (NUI) paradigm, which in many ways aims to succeed the traditional graphical user interface (GUI) and command line interface (CLI) paradigms for human-computer interaction. Indeed, Microsoft’s approach to Kinect clearly focuses on the expansion of NUI and a vision for Kinect that goes far beyond gaming. Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft recently stated that the “computing interface is evolving from something we drive to something that’s more like us” but while the world searches for applications that may be primed to accept NUI, Kinect and the activity surrounding it offer clues as to where motion-sensing technology may be headed in the next 5-10 years. Motion-sensing in gaming has had many premature starts, with a history of products for older generation consoles ranging in reputation from grossly unsuccessful to largely...

...pressurization/depressurization cycling causes the skin to inflate and deflate, stressing it around the rivets that fasten it to the airframe. The resulting strain, exacerbated by corrosion, drives the growth of initially microscopic cracks. To avoid catastrophe, aircraft are inspected periodically for cracks and corrosion. The inspection technology employed is ~90% naked-eye vision. We have developed and demonstrated robotic deployment of both remote enhanced 3D-stereoscopic video instrumentation for visual inspection and remote eddy current probes for instrumented inspection. This article describes the aircraft skin inspection application, how robotic deployment may alleviate human performance problems and workplace hazards during inspection, practical robotic deployment systems, their instrumentation packages, and our progress toward developing image enhancement and understanding techniques that could help aircraft inspectors to find cracks, corrosion, and other visually detectable damage. KEYWORDS: automated robot visual NDI inspection enhanced remote stereoscopic multiresolution 1. INTRODUCTION Pressurization and de-pressurization of an airplane during each takeoff and landing cycle causes its body to expand and contract like an inflating and deflating balloon. Cycling thus induces stress fatigue at the rivets that hold the aircraft surface skin to its frame, resulting in the growth of radial cracks. On April 28, 1988 Aloha Airlines flight 243, flying at 24,000 feet near Maui, abruptly...
