In Rome they tried to meet the common good for all people. They are public services, common defences, Rule of Law, Economic System, and protect rights. I graded them on how the Romans did. In Rome Their is a lot of public services for men and women. Some of these are unfair through. If you are a women and you wanted to bath you would have to schedule a time and work hard to get a bath. If you were a man you would have a time always after work when you needed one. In Rome the aqueducts supplied fresh water to the Romans. Everyone got fresh water and it was fair and a great Idea. The roads were open to everyone. It help people get to their destination quickly. Overall the Roman Republic did a good job but, I gave them a B for being unfair to women. In Rome gladiators would dress up and fight till one of them died. Gladiators did not have many rights. All they did until they died was fight. As Mr.Lafley said they were like human toys. These people did not want to do this. They were chosen from slaves and prisoners. The next type of people where slaves. They had no rights. Slaves would be sold and then they would have to …show more content…
With this money you could buy stuff. Some things you could buy would be glass bowls or clothes. You could buy lots of other things too. If you had a lot of money inform of coins, you would be able to buy things at market or by crops and more. Some other things that rich people did was rent out some of their property to poorer farmers. Rich people also ran business. Most not all citizens had roman coins to buy stuff from the market. They had a good system to use when handling money. I would give them a A-. I gave them this because sometimes it was not always fair. The Romans did a great job providing the common good. As you know, I have been graded them on the way. There was a big range of different grades. Overallç, the Romans get a C-. They did provide common good in five section but, only a few of them were

Roman Gladiator Research Paper

...For approximately 390 years, Romans used the Colosseum as an amphitheatre for the re-enactments of famous battles or executions. It is estimated that around 400,000 people died in the Colosseum, and 1,000,000 animals died. These people were called gladiators. They were armed combatants that entertained viewers in the Roman Empire in violent fights with other gladiators and animals (“The Roman Gladiator”). However, fighting against animals was rare. Usually, squaring off against animals were uncommon for gladiators. These animals were reserved for “venatores” and “bestiarii.” These people were special warriors. The animals used in the arena ranged from deer to elephants (“10 Things”).     Most gladiators were prisoners or war, slaves, or criminals....

Roman Gladiator Research Paper

...Roman Gladiators Long ago, in the Roman Empire, there were people called gladiators. Gladiators were slaves, criminals, and volunteers who fight each other to the death for entertainment. Roman gladiators were mostly men, sometimes there were female gladiators. They trained very hard to fight in the arena. Roman gladiators trained for arena fights by getting in very good physical shape, learning how to die, and learning how to use weapons. To be able to do anything, Roman gladiators had to be in really good physical shape. How did they get in this amazing shape? The first thing new gladiators did when they got to training camp is go through a inspection to see if they were able to train and fight. Research suggests that gladiator trainers kept their students on a largely vegetarian diet. Also, the first thing the trainers taught their gladiators was how to fight without a weapons to gain muscle in their body. Gladiators even trained with weapons two time as heavy as the real weapon to build up their upper body and core. Gladiators also had to learn how to die bravely. They also, had to learn how to die gracefully and with honor. Showing no fear when dying was a big part in learning how to die. Spectators of this sport fully expected these gladiators to die...

Slavery in Ancient Rome

...Slavery in Ancient Rome Rome as far research show had always exploited slaves, however during the early Republic Rome saw its slave population multiply significantly from a series of wars and conquests. This paper will discuss the rights and responsibilities of Roman slaves during the Republican era and early empire. It will also analyze the impact slavery had on Rome’s economic situation as well the impact on roman society and culture. Rome did not always have such an abundance of slaves. It was not until they conquered Corinth and sacked Carthage did they amass a significant amount of slaves. Some authors estimate that the number of slaves reached 300 000-350 000 in a total population of 900 000- 950 000 in Rome during the Augustan era.[1] It is of course impossible to determine the exact amount of slaves during this time, but nevertheless this estimate of slaves is still one third of the population. The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage mark the beginning of Rome’s “addiction” to slavery. After Rome had consolidated the main land of what is now Italy, this brought them into contact with much greater powers. The first Punic War (264-241 B.C) began when both Rome and Carthage took interest in Sicily.[2] Herodotus notes the significance of this first of many battles by comparing it to the battle of Salamis. He states, “They say too, that the victory of Gelo and Thero in Sicily over Hamilcar the Carthaginians tell out upon the very day that the Hellenes...

Back in the olden days, Romans had what was known to be gladiators; they would take prisoners and have them battle together in front of hundreds of people until one man was left standing. Does that sound familiar? Yes, it should sound like what Americans know to be as boxing and also to Joyce Carol Oates, “The Cruelest Sport”. “The Cruelest Sport” gives background of not only the dangers of boxing but also how the energy and momentum of this sport is what keeps these raging fans for more action. Carnival

...Payne English 102 Research paper on carnival Mardi gras Just the name Mardi gras conjures up images of drunken, bead-wearing revelers dancing through the streets of New Orleans. But how, and when, did this huge mid-winter party get started? Here's a look at the history of Mardi gras throughout the ages and across the nations. Herman states, Historians tell us that the ancient Romans probably kicked off the Mardi gras celebrations. (pg. 115)Their mid-February festival known as Lupercalia honored the god Lupercus, alternately known as the god of fertility and the god of agriculture and pastoral shepherds. In either case, his party definitely had Mardi Gras-like qualities, including days of feasting and drinking. And a little enjoying the "pleasures of the flesh", probably, too -- in fact, the term Carnival, often synonymous with Mardi gras, is derived from the Latin expression meaning "farewell to the flesh." Like most of the ancient Roman and Greek festivals, Lupercalia was adopted and adapted by the Church as a way of subtly converting the local pagans to Christianity. The carnival-like celebration of Lupercalia thus morphed into a last "fling" before the beginning of the Lenten period. Lent refers to the 40 days of pertinence and purification celebrated between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. During Lent, the religiously faithful refrain from a number of indulgences of the "flesh", including eating meat. (pg. 220) What began as a Roman-based celebration...

...What about Violence in Movies? Manabu Ozawa from Japan |[pic] | | |PHOTO BY THOMAS PETERS | | |"Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame | | |them for real life violence because they are closer to reality | | |than other movies." | | "The question whether movie violence should be regulated or not is a difficult and complicated matter." Although many people criticize violent movies, if there is a movie which does not contain sex and violence, who will go to see that movie? Most major movies, such as "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard", and "Independence Day", were really popular in spite of the fact that the "good guy" killed more people than the "bad guy" did. In my opinion, Hollywood tends to produce few kinds of movies--action, panic, love story, and comedy. Whenever I watch a movie or a video, there is at least one murder in each movie. The biggest number of deaths are in the panic movies, in my opinion. Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame them for real life violence because they are closer to reality than other movies. For example, in "Natural Born Killers" we can see around 50 deaths, whereas in "Independence Day" thousands of people die. In both movies, tons of people are killed, though the ways to kill are different. The big difference between them is about reality. |[pic] ...
