I believe these lines prove to be of great importance as they lead the audience to the tragedy that is to come. These lines give the audience an idea of the events that may come to pass as the words spoken act as a premonition of the course of tragic events to come. In lines one to four of this scene, Friar Lawrence begins by describing the beauty of the sunrise, which in turn contrasts with how Romeo and Juliet had viewed the sunrise in the preceding scene. The couple see the sunrise as a sign that their night together is over and that they must now say good bye, however the friar sees the sunrise optimistically, although we know that light is not always equated with good in the play, just as night is not always linked with evil, bad or other negative connotations. Therefore light could symbolise the dark tragedy that is looming ahead of them, as opposed to something good. The friar’s optimistic view of the sunrise as something good and positive is indicative of his naivety, which proves to be of great importance in the course of the play. Key words of especially this abstract are “name” and “love”. They are repeated many times. And no wonder, we know, that one of the main themes of this play is unhappy love of the main characters. Concept of love is percepted by the reader in two meanings: something high and beautiful and dark, unlucky at the same time. The second word is name. ...Fighting in the streets, faking deaths, and death are all signs of moral decay. Also another example of moral decay would be when Tybalt confronted Mercutio and Benvolio in the middle of the road. Even though Tybalt could have waited for Romeo to arrive, which was who he was looking for in the first place, he decided to fight Mercutio. “’Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain’” (119). Later on when Mercutio and Tybalt are dead more moral decay is shown because instead of already seeing that the rivalry between the two, Capulets and Montagues, is causing these tragedies they decide to banish Romeo, which was not necessarily fair. “’Immediately we do exile him hence….’” (129). If Tybalt had a little bit more moral, surely the story would have never ended in such a tragedy. Moral decay and Tybalt show how the world actually is now. Zeffirelli portrays Mercutio and Tybalt’s brawl as a joke, it seems like they are having fun with one another because of the constant laughter.
