...Global Peter Drucker Challenge Essay Contest Social Responsibility and Managerial Ethics A Focus on MNCs Prepared by: Kidus G.Mehalu Addis Ababa, Ethiopia August 2011 Social Responsibility and Ethics of MNCs The 2nd Peter Drucker’s Challenge Social Responsibility and Managerial Ethics -A Focus on MNCs . 1.1 Introductory Remarks Managers today are usually quite sensitive to issues of social responsibility and ethical behavior because of pressures from the public, interest groups, legal and governmental concerns, and media coverage. It is less clear where to draw the line between socially responsible behavior and the corporation’s other concerns, or between the conflicting expectations of ethical behavior among different countries. This essay on social responsibility and ethics set externally to international managers and thus in a sense outside their realm of control, is the expectation of appropriate behavior. This behavior is measured both in terms of social responsibility of the organization as such, as well as ethical behavior of individual managers. In addition to these expectations there is an onus on organizations and managers alike to manage the relationship with the host country. Having noted this, I shall now move on to the main issues this essay has set out to address in the following manner: 1.2 Global Interdependence Global interdependence is a compelling dimension of the global business environment, creating demands on international managers to take...

She was still not entirely convinced that she had made the right decision a few minutes earlier on the phone, when she firmly announced to the Director of the film company that she had decided not to invest in his venture, and not to join him as a full Partner. It had been a difficult decision to make; since early childhood she had nurtured the fantasy of some day writing and directing films that would tell a dramatic story, maybe even influence lives. Working with the director of the Swiss film production company for the past eighteen months, she could not help but admit to herself that producing films in fact entailed running around to find and structure the financing, and endless arguments with distribution companies, and constantly making deals that did not stick. Even the glamour of participating in the annual rituals at the Cannes Film Festival somehow did not compensate for all the superficiality that she had discovered the film business entailed. The ringing phone interrupted her reflections. Her first thought was, “I hope it‟s not the Director calling back to change my mind!” The voice of the caller was vaguely familiar, “Katrin, this is Trevor Johnson, surely you do remember – the Dean from BSL (Business School Lausanne), you called me Dr. Johnson? Unilever Bangladesh

...Executive Summery Most of the South Asian economies (e.g. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) have made significant economic progress in the last two decades and are well on track to becoming major regional or even world economic powerhouses. In the recent years, many MNCs are increasingly putting more attention to the emerging. Asian countries for competitive advantage. One classic example is China. With a population of more than 1.3 billion China is predicted to be the largest economy in the world by next 20 years surpassing United States (UN Report 2007). China has become the manufacturing and investment hub for many MNCs. Despite huge success for most of the MNCs, many already failed in doing business in China due to their management’s inability to manage their human resources appropriately. Taking the Chinese lead like the tiger economies in Asia, Bangladesh is also emerging as a dynamic and significant economic player in South Asia. Bangladesh is one of the pioneers in the region for economic liberalization. It has adopted the best policies of South Asia to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Doing business in Bangladesh is much easier than most of the developing countries. A recent report entitled “Doing Business in 2007: Creating Jobs” published jointly by World Bank and IFC placed Bangladesh in 68th position in terms of easy of doing business among 175 countries (World Bank, 2007). This places Bangladesh ahead of other countries in the region such as India (88th)...

Long Term Investment Decisions

...Outline a plan that managers in the low-calories, frozen microwaveable food company could follow in anticipation of raising prices when selecting pricing strategies for making their products response to a change in price less elastic. Provide a rationale for your response. To outline a plan that managers in the low-calories, frozen microwaveable food company could follow in anticipation of raising prices when selecting pricing strategies for making their products response to a change in price less elastic would detail a pricing strategy that would have no impact on the way consumers perceive and buy these products. Generally we see such demand only in situations in which the good or services are indispensable and the consumers cannot do without those, but not in the case of the microwaveable food products. The demand function for low calorie microwaveable food largely depends on the price of the product, its relative (substitute) product, advertisement overheads and consumer income. From the demand function and the elasticity considered, it is established that the market for the low calorie microwaveable foodstuff fit in to a market of monopolistic competitive manner. A monopolistic competitive is distinguished by a reasonable number of buyers and sellers. As a result people can change to another brand if a specific brand charges a soaring price. However monopolistic competitive suppliers carry out product differentiation. Profit (NP) = Total Revenue (TR) Total Cost...

Multinational Cost Me Capital and Term Structure

...MULTINATIONAL COST OF CAPITAL AND CAPITAL STRUCTURE LEARNING OBJECTIVES The specific objectives of this chapter are to: l explain how corporate and country characteristics influence an MNC’s cost of capital, explain why there are differences in the costs of capital among countries, and explain how corporate and country characteristics are considered by an MNC when it establishes its capital structure. l l An MNC finances its operations by using a mixture of fixed interest borrowing and equity financing that can minimize the overall cost of capital (the weighted average of its interest rate and dividend payments). By minimizing the cost of capital used to finance a given size and risk of operations, financial managers can maximize the value of the company and therefore maximize shareholder wealth. 25 26 MULTINATIONAL COST OF CAPITAL AND CAPITAL STRUCTURE BACKGROUND ON COST OF CAPITAL Apart from working capital, a firm’s capital consists of equity (retained earnings and funds obtained by issuing shares) and debt (borrowed funds). With these funds a firm invests in a portfolio of projects, each project potentially offering different risks and different returns. The interest rate that the firm applies or charges to these projects (the cost of using the firm’s capital) will therefore vary according to the project’s particular risk. Profitable investment in this context is where the firm invests in projects that achieve returns greater than that required by their risk. A project...

At&Tmarketing Strategy Information

...AT&T Marketing Strategy Indicates Next-Gen iPhone Could Be Called "4G" BY A.T. Faust III on Fri May 06th, 2011 http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/05/att-marketing-strategy-nextgen-iphone-called-4g Since time immemorial (read, “2008″), man has, with each impending refresh, debated the potential hot new names for Apple’s certain hot new iDevices. We are in such an era right now. With the upcoming unveiling of the next-generation iPhone, speculation is running wild regarding the name to be bestown upon it. iPhone 4G? iPhone 4S? iPhone 4GS? iPhone 5? iPhone SomethingElseEntirely? We don’t know (and won’t know) until Apple tells us, but some conspiracy theorists have noticed some promoted half-truths coming out of AT&T’s marketing department about what exactly constitutes cellular “4G” speed. Says Chris Ziegler, We’re well past the dream of saving the term “4G” to describe 100Mbps mobile networks, which was the original intent laid out by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union early in the last decade. We’re also well past saving it for LTE and WiMAX… But I’ve realized today that the term has reached new levels of irrelevance, because [At&T and T-Mobile are] not even saving it to describe the full capabilities of their newly-upgraded HSPA+ networks. The takeaway from this line of product-designation is simple: “4G” no longer means “4G,” nor does it even mean the slower 21 Mbps HSPA+. No, “4G” now means anything in the ballpark of 14.4 Mbps transfer capability. Or, you...
