1.02 The Importance of Salah • ‫ ﺣﺪﺑﺚ: أول ﻣﺎ ﻳﺤﺎﺳﺐ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ اﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﻳﻮم اﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ اﻟﺼﻼة، ﻓﺈن ﺻﻠﺤﺖ ﺻﻠﺢ ﺳﺎﺋﺮ ﻋﻤﻪﻠ وإن ﻓﺴﺪت ﻓﺴﺪ ﺳﺎﺋﺮ ﻋﻤﻪﻠ 'رواه اﻟﻄﱪا‬ Rasulullah (SAW) said, “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." Who will inherit Paradise: They will dwell therein (for ever). ْ ٌ ْ ْ 38. Every soul will be (held) In pledge for its deeds. 78:38‐47 ْ ‫ﻛُﻞ ﻧﻔﺲ ﺑﻤﺎ ﻛﺴﺒﺖ رﻫﻴﻨَﺔ )٨٣(إﻻ أَﺻﺤﺎب اﻟﻴﻤﲔ )٩٣(ﰲ ﺟﻨَّﺎت‬ ٍ َ ِ ِ َ َ َ َ ِ ٍ َ ُّ ِ ِ َِ َ َ َ 39. except the companions of the right hand. ْ ْ ْ 40. (They will be) In Gardens (of delight): They will ‫ﻳ ﺴﺎءﻟﻮن )٠٤(ﻋﻦ اﻟﻤﺠﺮﻣﲔ )١٤(ﻣﺎ ﺳﻠﻜﻜﻢ ﰲ ﺳﻘﺮ )٢٤(ﻗﺎﻟﻮا‬ ُ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ ِ ُ َ ِ ِ ُ ِ َ َ َُ َ ََ َ question Each other, ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ 41. and (ask) of the sinners: ‫ﻟَﻢ ﻧﻚ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺼﻠﲔَ )٣٤(وﻟَﻢ ﻧﻚ ﻧُﻄﻌﻢ اﻟﻤﺴﻜﲔَ )٤٤(وﻛُﻨَّﺎ ﻧﺨُﻮض ﻣﻊ‬ ِ ُ َ ْ َ ِ ِ ِّ َ ُ َ ِ ُ َ َ َ ََ ُ ُ 42. "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; 45. "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 46. "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 47. "Until there came to us (the hour) that is certain." • Chain Reaction – Domino Effect • Symmetry of Qur’an and Sunnah 1.03 The Description of Salah in the Qur’an Thus, have we made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves; and we appointed the Qibla to which Thou was used, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels (from the Faith). Indeed it was (A change) momentous, except to those guided by Allah. And never would Allah make your Faith of no effect. For Allah is to all people Most surely full of kindness, Most Merciful. guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle prayer; and stand before Allah In a devout (frame of mind) Verily, I am Allah. there is no god but I: so serve Thou me (only), and establish regular prayer for celebrating My praise

1.04 What is Khushu’? • Definition of ‫ – ﺧﺸﻮع‬to feel humbled and overwhelmed in such a manner that the body exhibits the signs of this fear e.g. ْ ْ ْ ً ْ َ ِ ‫وﺧﺸﻌﺖ اﻷﺻﻮات ﻟِﻠﺮ ﻦ ﻓَﻼ َﺴﻤﻊ إﻻ ﻫﻤﺴﺎ‬ ِ َ َ َ َ ِ َ َّ ُ َ ُ َ 20:108

on that Day will They follow the Caller (straight): no crookedness (can They show) him: all sounds shall humble themselves In the presence of ((Allah)) Most gracious: nothing shalt Thou Hear but the tramp of their feet (as They march) their eyes will be cast down,‐ ignominy will cover them; seeing that They had been summoned aforetime to bow In adoration, while They were whole, (and had refused) some faces, that Day, will be humiliated, And among His Signs In this: Thou seest the earth barren and desolate; but when we send down rain to it, it is stirred to life and yields increase. Truly, He who gives life to the (dead) earth can surely give life to (men) who are dead. for He has power over all things Had we sent down This Qur'an on a mountain, Verily, Thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. such are the similitudes which we propound to men, that They may reflect And Thou wilt see them brought forward to the (Penalty), In a humble frame of mind because of (their) disgrace, (and) looking with a stealthy glance. and the believers will say: "Those are indeed In loss, who have given to perdition their own selves and those belonging to them on the Day of Judgment. For, believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, ْ ْ ‫إﻧَﻤﺎ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨُﻮن اﺬﻟﻳﻦ إذَا ذُﻛﺮ اﷲ وﺟﻠَﺖ ﻗُﻠُﻮ ﻢ وإذَا ﺗُﻠﻴﺖ ﻋﻠَ ِ ﻢ‬ ِ ِ َ ُْ ِ َ ُ َّ ِ ِ َ ِ َّ َ ِ ُ َ ِّ َ ُ َ feel a tremor In their hearts, and when They Hear His Signs َ ْ ‫آﻳﺎﺗﻪ زاد ْ ﻢ إﻳﻤﺎﻧًﺎ وﻋ ر‬ ْ rehearsed, find their Faith strengthened, and put (all) their ‫ﻢ ﻳﺘﻮﻛﻠﻮن )٢(اﺬﻟﻳﻦ ﻳﻘﻴﻤﻮن اﻟﺼﻼة‬ َ َّ َ ُ ِ ُ َ ِ َّ َ ِ ُ َ َ ُ ُ َ َ ُ َ ّ َ َ َ ِ ِّ َ َ َ َ trust In their Lord; ٌ ْ ً ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ‫وﻣﻤﺎ رزﻗﻨَﺎ ُ ﻳﻨﻔﻘﻮن )٣(أُوﻟَ ِ ﻚ ُ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨُﻮن ﺣﻘﺎ ﻟَ ُ درﺟﺎت ﻋﻨﺪ‬ َّ َ ِ ُ ُ َ َ ِ َ َ َّ ِ َ َ ُ ِ ُ َ ََ 3. who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of ٌ ْ ٌ ْ ْ (٤) ٌ ‫ر ِّ ِ ﻢ وﻣﻐﻔﺮة ورزق ﻛﺮ‬ ِ َ ِ َ َ َِ the gifts we have given them for sustenance: َ َ 4. such In truth are the believers: They have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance 19. truly man was created very impatient;‐ 20. Fretful when evil touches him; 21. and miserly when good reaches him;‐ 22. not so those devoted to Prayer;‐ 23. those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 24. And those in whose wealth is a recognized right. 25. for the (needy) who asks and Him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 26. and those who hold to the truth of the Day of judgment; 27. and those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,‐ 28. for their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of peace and Tranquility;‐ 29. and those who guard their chastity, 30. except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,‐ for (then) They are not to be blamed, 31. but those who trespass beyond This are transgressors;‐ 32. and those who respect their Trusts and covenants; 33. and those who stand firm In their testimonies; 34. and those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;‐ 35. Such will be the honored ones In the Gardens (of Bliss). 4. so woe to the worshippers 5. who are neglectful of their prayers, 6. those who (want but) to be seen (of men) ‫ إﺣﺴﺎن‬vs ‫ رﻳﺎء‬ ْ the Hypocrites ‐ They think They are over‐ ‫وإذَا ﻗﺎﻣﻮا إ َ اﻟﺼﻼة ﻗﺎﻣﻮا ﻛُﺴﺎ َ ﻳﺮاءون اﻟﻨَّﺎس وﻻ ﻳﺬﻛُﺮون اﷲ إﻻ ﻗﻠﻴﻼ‬ ِ َ ِ َ َّ َ ِ ُ َ ِ َ َ ُ َُ ُ َ ِ َّ َ َ َ reaching Allah, but He will over‐ reach them: َ ُ when They stand up to prayer, They stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but Little do They hold Allah In remembrance That you worship Allah as if you see Him, for ‫أن ﺗﻌﺒﺪ اﷲ ﻛﺄﻧﻚ ﺗﺮاه ، ﻓﺈن ﻟﻢ ﺗﻜﻦ ﺗﺮاه ﻓﺈﻧﻪ ﻳﺮاك‬ if you don't see Him then truly He sees you 4:142 8:2‐4

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There is no Muslim man who, when the time for a prescribed prayer comes, he does wudoo’ properly, has the proper attitude of khushoo’, and bows properly, but it will be an expiation for all his previous sins, so long as they were not major sins (kabeerah).And this is the case for life” (Reported by Muslim)

Broadness of the word ‫ ‐ رزق‬ o ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ٌ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ِ (٥) ‫ واﺧﺘﻼف اﻟﻠَﻴﻞ واﻟ ّ َ ﺎر وﻣﺎ أَﻧﺰل اﷲ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺴﻤﺎء ﻣﻦ رزق ﻓَﺄَﺣﻴﺎ ﺑﻪ اﻷرض ﺑﻌﺪ ﻣﻮ ِ ﺎ وﺗﺼﺮﻳﻒ اﻟﺮﻳﺎح آﻳﺎت ﻟِﻘﻮ ٍم ﻳﻌﻘﻠُﻮن‬ ِ ِ ٍ ِ ِ ِ َ َّ َ ِ ُ َّ َ َ َ َ ِ َ َ ِ ّ ِ ِ َ َ ِ َ َ َ َ ِّ ِ ِ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ 45:5 ‐ and In the alternation of night and Day, and the fact that Allah Sends down sustenance from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and In the change of the winds,‐ are Signs for those that are wise. o ْ ْ ْ ْ (٨٢) ‫ وﺗﺠﻌﻠُﻮن رزﻗﻜﻢ أَﻧَﻜﻢ ﺗُﻜﺬﺑﻮن‬ ّ ُ ُ َ ِ َ َ َ َ َ ُ ِّ َ 56:82 ‐ and have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false? o ْ ْ (٢٢) ‫ و ِﰲ اﻟﺴﻤﺎء رزﻗُﻜﻢ وﻣﺎ ﺗُﻮﻋﺪون‬ ِ ِ َ َّ َ ُ َ َ َ ُ َ 51:22 ‐ and In heaven is your sustenance, As (also) that which ye are promised.

We seek Your assistance and ask for Your guidance, and we beseech Your forgiveness and return to You in repentance. We cherish faith in You and place our trust in You. We attribute all goodness to You. We are grateful to You and refuse to be ungrateful to You. We abandon and forsake all those who reject You. O Allah, You alone we worship, unto You alone we pray; unto You alone we prostrate, and for You alone we strive. Unto You alone we flee for refuge. We cherish hope in Your mercy and we fear Your retribution. That man can have nothing but what He strives for And those who strive In Our (cause), we will certainly guide them to Our paths: for Verily Allah is with those who do right. O Thou man! Verily Thou art ever toiling on towards Thy Lord‐ painfully toiling, but Thou shalt meet Him.

ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ‫اﻟﻠَ ُ َّ اﻫﺪ ِ ﻓِﻴﻤﻦ ﻫﺪﻳﺖ، وﻋﺎﻓِﻨِﻲ ﻓِﻴﻤﻦ ﻋﺎﻓَﻴﺖ، وﺗﻮﻟَّﻨِﻲ ﻓِﻤﻦ ﺗﻮﻟَّﻴﺖ، وﺑﺎرك ِ ﻓِﻴﻤﺎ أﻋﻄَﻴﺖ، وﻗﻨِﻲ ﺷﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻗﻀﻴﺖ، ﻓَﺈﻧﻚ ﺗﻘﻀﻲ وﻻ ﻳﻘﻀﻰ ﻋﻠﻴﻚ، إﻧﻪ ُ ﻻ ﻳﺬل ﻣﻦ‬ ِ ِ ِ َ َ َّ ّ ِ َ َ َ ََ َ َ ُ َ َ َ َ َّ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َّ َ َ َ َ ِ َ َ َ ُّ ِ َ َ َ ََ َ َ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ‫واﻟَﻴﺖ وﻻ ﻳﻌﺰ ﻣﻦ ﻋﺎدﻳﺖ ﺗﺒﺎرﻛﺖ رﺑﻨَﺎ و ﺗﻌﺎﻟَﻴﺖ‬ َ َ َ َ َّ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ ُ ّ ِ َ َ َ َ َ

O Allah, guide me along with those whom You have guided, pardon me along with those whom You have pardoned, be an ally to me along with those whom You are an ally to and bless for me that which You have bestowed. Protect me from the evil You have decreed for verily You decree and none can decree over You. For surety, he whom You show allegiance to is never abased and he whom You take as an enemy is never honored and mighty. Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: While Gabriel was sitting with ‫ﻋﻦ اﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﺎس رﺿﻲ اﷲ ﻋ ﻤﺎ ﻗﺎل : ﺑﻴﻨﻤﺎ ﺟﱪﻳﻞ ﻗﺎﻋﺪ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ - ﺻ اﷲ‬ the Prophet of Allah (pbuh) he heard a creaking sound above ً him. He lifted his head and said: This is a gate opened in ‫ﻋﻠﻴﻪ وﺳﻠﻢ - ﻊ ﻧﻘﻴﻀﺎ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻮﻗﻪ - أي ﺻﻮﺗﺎ ﻛﺼﻮت اﻟﺒﺎب إذا ﻓﺘﺢ - ﻓﺮﻓﻊ‬ heaven today which had never been opened before. He said, "If anyone of you is concerned about an issue he should offer a two Raka’ah prayer other than the compulsory ones and say: O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings You are capable and I am not You know and I do not and You know the unseen O Allah! ...Field Trip 1. I have driven by the mosque many times. It is only a couple minutes from my house. There have been times where I had to drop off my friends at the mosque or pick them up. I always thought the outside was beautiful. The mosque is white, blue and yellow with a yellow dome over it. I come from a church where there are crosses all around the entrance, on top of the church on the doors, so it is obvious that it is a church. When you pass by the mosque you wouldn’t really know what it is because there was nothing distinct about it. So to answer the initial question, the architecture did not lend itself the worship because there was nothing really special from the outside about it. 2. The inside of the mosque are the same colors. It is very bright inside. There was no pictures or portraits of Mohammad. There are a few plaques on the wall and there is a bookshelf of Qurans. The minute you walk in you must take off your shoes. After you take off your shoes, you then go to the area where you pray. The men and woman are both separated. Men are upstairs and the woman is downstairs. Even if the girls do not wear the scarf permanently, when they are praying they have to wear it. Before you pray they have to do something called the Wadu. A wadu is a cleaning ritual done before the prayer. ...Visit to South Bay Islamic Association (Evergreen Location) I visited the Evergreen location of SBIA (South Bay Islamic Association) on a Friday for the Jummah prayers which starts at 1:20. This location is associated with the downtown location. It looks like a newer location and there are plans to expand to a larger mosque. I decided on this location because I was already around the area. According to their website they offer five daily prayers, Jummah prayers, and monthly community events. There are monthly events that anyone can attend including homeless feedings. When I first walked in, I didn’t know what to expect. The building is really new and was not completed yet. I removed my shoes like everyone else and a man at the front greeted me right away because he could tell I was a visitor and he described the prayer and activities that would happen that Friday. Robes and scarves are available for people that aren’t already dressed accordingly. I was told that my arms were required to be covered because I was wearing only a t-shirt. The man offered a robe to me, but I decided to retrieve a sweater from my car. When the prayer started around 1:30, I stayed in the back of the room and observed what was happening.
