Salmon Mommas
Ten years ago, there was an old documentary named Glaciers -- Alaska’s Rivers of Ice which gave us a brief view of salmon. Salmon are a very famous anadromous migratory fish, which spawn in freshwater rivers, postpartum back in the ocean of fattening. The young fish will live in fresh water for 2 or 3 years, and then they swim into the sea, where staying a year or years until sexual maturity. After that, they return to the original birthplace to spawn. After ten years, now, just as salmon migrate to give birth to their offspring, so too are many Chinese mothers traveling great distances to America to give birth. They are known as “salmon mommas”. They produce Americans in order to let their children enjoy more than 180 countries visa-free entry, free compulsory education for 13 years and every kind of perfect social service.
It seems like they have plenty of reasonable explanations for giving birth in the United States. First, the one-child policy must be the very primary reason for that behavior. Most Chinese families will plan to conceive again, resulting from the tradition preference for sons over daughters. But because of the banning of policy, those couples who can afford the high price choose to give birth abroad, which also create a new industry. Second, another attractive reason must be the citizenship in United States. According to the law of the United States, every person born within the dominions and allegiance of the United Stated, whatever the situation of his parents, is a natural born citizen. (Stock, Margaret) As we all know, it takes at least 6 to 7 years to become a citizen of America, and the older the longer. So, Chinese parents produce American children in the view of helping their kids enjoy the rights of every American, as well as be hopeful of getting citizenships for themselves someday. (Graglia, Lino)
Unfortunately, things are not as beautiful as they think; and actually, both of the twoaforementioned reasons are easily to argue against. First, the behavior that changing the connection point of birthplace of a childin order to become a permanent resident of the United States is a violation of Chinese law. Second, born in USA just means the child has a choice to become an American; it depends on his or her decision at 18. So, it’s hard to find valid reasons to be bullish on traveling to America to give birth. This illegal practice is immoral and has to be changed for the following reasons.
First off, even if 30 percent of salmon mommas have the experiences of living abroad and 20 percent can speak English, they select to give birth in America through procreation agencies.During the time abroad, some expectant mothers have to live in basements, and all of them must have prepared for mess. According to some information provided by agencies, gravidas will generally live in villas which can accommodate from 3 to 10 persons. They have to share living rooms and kitchens, what’s worse; they have to endure sharing bathrooms. Almost every confinement centers are struggling to expand their scales, look for new sites in order to add empty rooms; but the pace of expansion lags far behind the eager demands of expectant mothers. For mothers’ close to labor, they have to be arranged in basements, wait until the month of confinement after giving birth, and then fight for an opportunity to change to bigger rooms. For the sake of having American offspring, pregnant women not only tolerate living in basements, but also have to get used to food prepared in a large canteen cauldron. In addition, disclosed by an insider, cooks in a lot of centers are not star chef hired from hotels, but proprietors’ relatives who are here seeking a livelihood. When it comes to the differences between meals before and after delivery, intermediaries mostly emphasize just quantity, rather than quality. Postpartum diets are just upgraded from the original three meals a day into five meals, but the dishes do not have any changes of pertinence. Improper nutrition aftercare, not only cannot restore body and mind, in the future will also cause many problems.(Wei Chen)
Running a confinement is seemed as a lucrative business. However, if a confinement center wants to be legalized, it has to register in the name of a children’s hospital. But these centers are big houses bought by local Chinese, it breaks the law to use civilian houses for commercial, so that it is difficult for legalization. Illegal buildings and running unlicensed, risks attached are oblivious, and one of the biggest question marks will play on the babysitters. Because of the extremely high labor costs in the United States, small centers cannot afford the wages of professional nurses; the only way is hiring babysitters to take care of the children and mothers. Those babysitters are local Chinese; there are no certifications for their qualification but only oral guarantees. (Yao Chang)
Even if “salmon mommas” can successfully bring their American babies back to China, there are still many potential risks at home. Children born in the United States will get three important documents or files: birth certificate, U.S. Passport and a China’s travel permit.Instruction on the website of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. says “Children born in the United States whose parents are both Chinese citizens and all did not get the American green card, the children go to China should apply for China's travel permits.”(Embassy Website) Well after returning home, parents can use American’s birth certificate for registering their child’s residence. Of course, parents can also use the child's U.S. passport as identity documents through customs, but in this way, the child will be a "foreigner" and probably encounter a lot of inconvenience in schools. Both a U.S. passport and China’s travel permit need renewal, once they are expired, the American babies will not be allowed to immigrate or emigrate.
However, when the children grow up to the age of 18, the U.S. government will require the children’s oath to become an American citizen, and at the same time to give up other nationality, since then, the children travelling between China and the United States can only adopt an American identity. Since neither China nor the United States recognize dual nationalities, plus nationality issues are related to national sovereignty; so in principle, it is necessary to remove them immediately after found, and in actual operation, the public security organs will generally cancel the ID number of who has “dual citizenships” directly, and make correspondingly changes on the household registration books.
Moreover, intermediaries repeatedly stress the "ultimate goal" that American children can accept solid basic education in China and enjoy the rich resources of higher education abroad, wait until they are 21 years old, parents can get U.S. green cards and enjoy the local benefits. However the possible problems before achieving the goal are understatements and the waiting period can be 18 years or longer. In fact, even the first child born in America through an agency is only 4 or 5 years old, no one has actual experiences of enrolling in schools, studying as a foreigner, and some other practical problems. The intermediaries also admit that they can only answer such issues under the existing policy; there is no instance for reference. And according to the agreements, the cooperation relations terminate as soon as mothers go back to China; so problems encountered subsequently can only be resolved by the families themselves. In addition, the American government also has noticed the entry of foreign pregnant women giving birth to obtain the nationality, in order to stop foreign women to have children in the United States; members of Congress also have had several appeals or proposals to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act. Child born in the United States can automatically receive U.S. citizenship is written in the U.S. Constitution and cannot be changed, but the parents are likely to encounter new obstacles in applying for a green card.
In addition, this practice is also threatened America. Potential expends can be predictable in spite of the fact the industry brings America more customs and incomes. One possible expends may be, for instance, free medical treatment for children whose parents did not pay a penny in tax.In regard to the fact that there are many confinement centers in California, especially in San Francisco and Los Angeles. As a result, it has been estimated that over two-thirds of all births in Los Angeles public hospitals,'' more than one-half of all births in Los Angeles, and nearly 10% of all births in the nation in recent years were to illegal immigrant mothers. (Elton Gallegly) Many of these mothers frankly admitted that the reason they entered illegally was to give birth to an American citizen.
People may say that the behavior of providing such kind of services is suspected violating the regulations. The fact is there are no prohibitive industry access to rules and no specific regulations which can point out its illegality. However, theformulationoflaws should haveitspreciseness, loopholes found should be filled. From the national level, the two countries consign a relevant judicial agreement for exchanging information about Chinese mothers giving birth in the United States. To say the least, a sworn statement made by a child's parents while returning home: the child has abandoned any other nationality except China, or is willing to bear the corresponding responsibility may well be a solution to meet the urgent needs. Change should come to both China and America.

...million metric tons, of which almost 31% came from farming activities. The FAO also estimates that to meet the needs of the human population of 2025, total production should increase to 165 million metric tons. This significant increase can not come from the catch of wild species without causing serious damage to marine ecosystems, lakes and rivers. Consequently, the increase in the production of seafood must necessarily come from a significant increase in the efficiency of crops. The world's most populous countries like China, India and Indonesia, or those lacking sufficient arable land areas, such as Japan, are turning mainly to aquaculture for food production (Solar, 2002). In 1997, for the first time the world production of farmed salmon surpassed the total global...

...Aiming Higher: Motivating Knowledge Workers Background Among the top ornamental fish service providers in the world is Qian Hu.This Singapore-based company started as a piggery in the 1980s. However, due to government regulation against such business, founder Yap Tik Huay decided to convert it into a fish farm instead. Nevertheless, in 1989, the Great Singaporean Flood caused an unfavorable wipeout of Qian Hu’s fish supply. In spite of this, Qian Hu was able to recover from the loss. Today, the company boasts being one of the largest ornamental fish service providers in the country with services that include farming, importing, exporting, and distributing over 500 species of ornamental fish.  Qian Hu exports to over 80 countries across the globe, representing a huge percentage of Singapore’s ornamental fish exports. It also has branches in Thailand, China, and Malaysia to cater to their customers overseas. Pursuing its vision of being a “one-stop shop” for their clientele, the company has also expanded its services into manufacturing and exporting aquarium accessories, feeds, and medications. Qian Hu credits its success to its Managing Director, Kenny Yap. He is a staunch believer in treating their employees like family, even joining them for coffee breaks at times. This initiative by Yap helped develop strong teamwork, camaraderie and commitment to the company. As such Qian Hu was able to secure its position in the industry, holding 32% of the market share in ornamental...

Essay On Goldfish

...In the wild, goldfish are really different from what we are use to see in aquarium and ponds. During the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907), it was popular to keep carp in ponds. Some of these carp displayed yellowish orange colour rather than silver coloration. So they began to breed the yellowish orange variety instead of the silver variety and created what we call today the Common goldfish. Today, many varieties of fancy goldfish are derived from the common goldfish. They have been breed to look different in color, shape and size (see bellow). The Common goldfish is a coldwater fish so the tank does not have to be heated. It will do well with a water temperature of 65° – 78°F, a pH between 6.0 and 8.0 and a dH of 5 -19. Compatibility: The Common goldfish is a coldwater fish. This is actually one of the reason why it is not recommended to keep the common goldfish with tropical fish that require warmer water. When buying new tank mate, remember that any fish that can fit into a goldfish’s mouth will get eaten. Finally, it is not recommended to keep narrow-bodied (common goldfish, comet and shubunkin) and fat-bodied goldfish (most fancy goldfish) varieties together because the narrow-bodied ones will have eaten all the food before the fat-bodied realise it’s time to eat. Compatible plants: It is not easy to find plants that are suitable for a goldfish tank. Most commonly available plants will not thrive in goldfish tank conditions because they are tropical plants. Most plants also require...

...article written by R. J. Beamish, C. Mahnken, and C. M. Neville informs us about the changes that occur when hatchery produced Pacific Salmon are released into the waters. You can find “Hatchery and wild production of Pacific salmon in relation to large-scale, natural shifts in the productivity of the marine environment” in the ICES Journal of Marine Science. Because Pacific salmon have been so heavily fished for hundreds of years society has begun to manually produce salmon in hatcheries and release them into the wild. A heated subject for many due to the effects the artificially produced fish have on the wild naturally bread salmon. Several observations have been discussed from the examinations made from the trends of five different species (pink, chum, sockeye, coho, and chinook) but specifically pink chum and sockeye due to the due to the number of catches, in 5 heavily fished areas including our very own Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California). I will outline the background and progression of artificial salmon population enhancements in correlation with the issue that climate change and human development have had a severe negative impact on the wild and hatchery produced salmon. Sockeye salmon were introduced into the northern area several times both with success and failure. In the early 1900’s, propagated salmon in Alaska showed no benefit. They tried again in the Colombia River and Baker Lake Washington to help restore population after the dams...

Executive Summary Aqua Fish Canada Inc.(AFC) is facing with several challenges that the board ofdirector decided to adopt new business strategies to meet its corporate strategic goals. Currently, Site 3 employees' neglect of duties and increasing competitive aquaculture industry has made AFC's position at a disadvantage. Therefore, they determined to implement proper strategies (diversifyinto shellfish farming or Project Blue Wave) to enhance its profitability in a better way. The detail of analysis will be shown in the following report. Based on the analysis, the proper recommendation for AFC is to diversifyits shellfish farming by leasing theblue mussel farm site in PEI, which could provide an upward progitability in the future. To achieve its strategic goals, AFC should provide anappropriate inplementation plan: • Training new employees for mussel farm site • Improving oversea shipment system • Maintaining high quality to create reputation in oversea market Introduction Currently, all the internal and external factors (such as the growing intense competition of aquaculture industry, AFC's Site 4 quality issue, Site 3 employees issue, and seasonal gap of this industry) put AFC in negative position. Case Study 3

...talks more than a decade later about the possible removal of these dams. The dams bring a lot of money to the Northwest region and support a lot of jobs among, farmers, barge operators, and people who work at the dam themselves. This is not to mention that it supports recipients of hydroelectric power in this region and the removal would leave them without energy; in this case without clean energy. However these dams have also affected many other people who live in this region but not for the better. Native Americans who ritually let the first Salmon pass up the river have been hurting for some time. They say their soul is weak and their main source of food is no longer plentiful like it used to be. The Native Americas went through some hard times when the government told them they couldn’t fish for these Salmon anymore because they were closed to being endangered. I’m hoping my thoughts can persuade you to remove the dams and let the wild salmon swim freely again. Imagine having a main source of food for the whole tribe and the government who has destroyed this one source is physically and lawfully removing members of the tribe from the river telling them they are not allowed to fish. Yet at the same time they are allowing commercial industries to fish in the same spot. As a Native American in this region I would be outraged. Outraged because the river that I have fished on for all my life is being taken right out from underneath me. The Native...

Tragedy of the Columbia River Salmon

...Tragedy of the Columbia River Salmon A brief summary of what the “Tragedy of the Commons” is about when individuals act according to their own personal interests cause damage to a common resource (that is unregulated) because they over use it. In the end the resource is depleted for all. The Columbia River salmon population is a real life example that hits close to home. Thanks to the salmons unique life cycle it is a very important component in the Columbia River Basin. The salmon start out being born in the many tributaries of the Columbia River, sometimes hundreds of miles inland as far as Canada and Idaho. After the salmon mature they go downstream to the ocean where they spend most of their live enjoying the oceans bountiful nutrients not found in the rivers and streams, sometimes becoming as large as 70 pounds. Towards the end of their lives they venture back up the rivers to the place they were born to spawn the next generation. Before the late 1800s the “runs” of the fish traveling upstream were enormous providing food for all manner of native wildlife. When the fish reach their home and spawn they die. Their decomposing bodies become nutrients for the local stream ecosystem. This is the only way the oceans many nutrients have made it upstream, in effect the salmon help feed everyone from bears to trees and give them nutrients they otherwise would never get. In the latter half of the 1800s American entrepreneurs started developing canneries along the river and due...

Informative Essay: The Paddlefish

...The Paddlefish is a large fish native to the Mississippi river. The Paddlefish has a long body and has a paddle looking snout, small eyes that are set forward, and a shark-like tail. The Paddlefish has no scales except for those on its throat, pectoral girdle, and tail fin. This large fish can grow up to 2.2 m (7.3 ft) and can weigh over 23 kg (50 lbs); "historically, paddlefish have been reported to be over 91kg (200 lbs)." Paddlefish live in the open waters of large rivers and river lakes, like lake St. Croix, oxbow lakes, and backwaters. Paddlefish eat Zooplankton, so they need waters that are rich in this organism, paddlefish also require free-flowing rivers with gravel bars that are flooded in spring for breeding purposes. Male paddlefish mature at 7-9 years of age, females, 9-12 years. Access to breeding grounds is more important for the paddlefish because they do not breed every year because each fish has a lifespan of over 20 years; the female paddlefish grows larger and will live longer than males. Adult paddlefish are filter feeders, they swim across the bottom of the river catching zooplankton with their paddle-shaped snout, their snout is designed for easier ability to catch zooplankton. Paddlefish have become an endangered species in Minnesota and other states across the U.S., this is a result of dams and flood impoundment structures that have made it impossible for paddlefish to get to breeding grounds, dredging and overfishing have had effects on the paddlefish...

Fish Farming

...Background……………………………………………………………………………………Page 2 Major Issues…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Page 2 & 3 Benefits………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….Page 3 & 4 Conclusion……………………………………………………………………………………………………………Page 4 Works Cited……………………………………………………………………………………………….………….Page 5 Executive Summary Fish farming in Canada has recently taken quite the spotlight, for good or for worse that is the question that needs to be addressed. I feel the negatives greatly outshine the positives at this point in time; the wild salmon stocks are currently in danger and fish farming is taking double the amount of wild salmon to produce half the amount of farmed fish. The fish coming from the farms are dubious to say the least; they produce a chemical, disease ridden product that is not beneficial for consumption. There are many issues around the benefits of the actual fish, and what it might do to the wild if they are interbred and mixed among the wild salmon. However like everything along with the negatives come some benefits of these farms. There is a major industry with fish farming which produces very high profit revenues. With these high revenues comes thousands of full time and part time jobs for people that otherwise would be unemployed. Like most industries there are many issues that need to be worked on, with some time and money I think fish farming could continue to be profitable while being less harmful on the environment and producing a...

...7 is considered acidic anything above 7 is basic. Around neutral or 7 is a healthy reading for PH but slightly higher or lower than that is fine too. To test for turbidity you put some water in a PH meter or in a solution to find out for the reading. In Milton we had a reading of 7.6 for the meter and a 7.1 for the solution. In mcnulty we had 6.7 with the meter and 7.1 with the solution these are all good readings for both creeks. It’s important for the readings to be healthy because if they are too high or too low the organisms can die. Salmon fry would be able to survive in both creeks pretty successfully. Dissolved Oxygen: The dissolved oxygen test is the test to see how much oxygen is in a body of water. About 8.0 is a healthy reading for this test and about 6.0 supports salmon spawning. In the Milton we got 6.3 and in the Mcnulty we got a 2.3 reading. This test is important because it tells how much oxygen is in the water. Salmon fry would be able to survive in the Milton but not the Mcnulty as the oxygen levels are way too low in the Mcnulty. Velocity: Velocity is the test of the speed at which a body of water is moving. Ideal speeds are 5-15 mph. To test the velocity you measure out 10 meters across the stream then drop an apple in and use a stopwatch to see how long it takes to travel the 10 meters. My group did not have a complete reading for the stream because they said there apple got stuck while doing the test. It’s important for the velocity to be...

...Walmart has been taking the necessary steps to move toward 100% sustainable seafood for the better part of ten years. In working with the MSC they are establishing guidelines for fisheries and encouraging their suppliers to process and distribute sustainable fish, be it wild caught or certain farm raised varieties. As of the end of 2009, “Walmart’s wild seafood was 55% MSC certified… you can’t be 100% certified when you can’t be certified on a number of products. We’re working with MSC to encourage them to build these other certifications standards.” While Walmart is making the necessary changes on the back end to improve the sustainability in their supply chains, they have not truly begun advertising the value of sustainable seafood to their customers. As a result, customers are less likely to pay the higher costs for these “sustainable” alternatives, when they do not recognize the value. In the article outlining Walmart’s Sustainability Strategy specific to inventory management within their seafood supply chain, The Fishin’ Company is one supplier that has embraced Walmart’s asks, spending more time, effort and money to adhere to their sustainability standards. One of the main issues that Walmart faces is the length of time in which it takes for a fishery or supply-company to become MSC certified; the process can take up to two years. Given the increased demand, Walmart cannot afford this lapse in time. Walmart needs to work with the MSC to expedite the process. In order...

Fish Farming

...Fish farming Fish farming or pisciculture is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture. Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. Worldwide, the most important fish species used in fish farming are carp, salmon, tilapia and catfish.[1][2] There is an increasing demand for fish and fish protein, which has resulted in widespread overfishing in wild fisheries, China holding 62 percent of the world's fish farming practice.[3] Fish farming offers fish marketers another source. However, farming carnivorous fish, such as salmon, does not always reduce pressure on wild fisheries, since carnivorous farmed fish are usually fed fishmeal and fish oil extracted from wild forage fish. The global returns for fish farming recorded by the FAO in 2008 totalled 33.8 million tonnes worth about $US 60 billion.[4] In 2005, aquaculture represented 40% of the 157.5 million tons of seafood that was produced, meaning that it has become a critical part of our world's food source even though the industry is still technically in its 'infancy' and didn't really become well known until the 1970s. Because of this rise in aquaculture, there has been a rise in the per capita availability of seafood globally within the last few decades.[5] Major categories of...

Sea Lions

...Josh Hooley 12/4/14 Bio Issues Paper For my issues paper I am going to talk about the problems at Bonneville dam, with specifically the salmon munching Sea lions. Since 2002 Bonneville began to have sea lion sightings and at the time there were less than half a dozen of them so they were looked upon as a novelty. Something that was a surprise to see this animal at this particular location since they are native to the coast, a few years went by and the lions numbers increased. By 2004 there were over 100, so the biologists started to see a decrease in salmon numbers, so there started to be irritation instead of interest in the sea lions. This meant now that the people that were trying to increase fish numbers now had another rival, so a question started to be raised about the sea lions and what to do to get them out of the area. In 2008 there started to be rumblings about shooting a few of the animals, although they started with other things such as rubber bullets and empty shells. When this didn’t work they have now began shooting and to the present time there has been 70 confirmed kills, now leading to the question whether or not there should be regulated seasons. Last year research has shown that one third of the spring salmon didn’t make it past the dam, so now there is no doubt that the reason salmon numbers are down is due to the sea lions. So now it basically comes down to how many animals need to be taken out or do all of them need to go? In my...
