Sam Harris on Free Will

Convince that free will is an illusion
Worse than an illusion- a totally incoherent idea Impossible to describe a universe in which it could be true

Two Assumptions:
Each of us was free to behave differently than we did in the past Example: I could have chosen chocolate ice-cream but I chose vanilla
We are the conscious source of our thoughts and actions The experience of wanting to do something is in fact the proximate cause of action Example: I feel that I want to move and then I move

Both assumptions are false

We live in a world of cause and effect
No way of thinking of cause and effect that allows the affirmation of free wills assumptions
Either our wills are determined by a long chain of prior causes And we are not responsible for them
Or they are the product of chance And we are not responsible for them
Or they are some combination of determinism and chance
No combination allows us free will

Example: Murderer
As sickening as I might find the persons behavior, I have to admit if I were to trade places with him, atom for atom, I would be him. There is no extra part of me that could resist the impulse to victimize innocent people.

Nobody picks the life influences which shape the development of their nervous system
You are no more responsible for the micro structure of your brain than you are for your height
The role of luck appears decisive

Imagine the murderer was found to have a tumor in the place of the brain that would explain his impulses
We would view him as a victim of biology
A brain tumor is a special case of physical events giving rise to thoughts and actions

Deeper than cause and effect
We have a subjective experience of free will which cannot be mapped onto physical reality
The subjective experience is also intangible
Thoughts simply appear in consciousness --- what

Nike Case Study

...Running Head: Nike, Inc. Nike, Inc. Case Study Adelaide A. Odoteye FIN 586 – Dr. Cullers Fall 2006 The brand name “Nike” is one of the most readily recognized around the globe. The name is synonymous with high-quality athletic shoes, apparel, and accessories in the minds of many people worldwide. Perhaps it is the ubiquitous Nike “swoosh” and compelling marketing that commands attention. Or maybe it is the association between the brand name and its famous endorsers, such as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Alternatively, it may be Nike’s cutting-edge sporting vision and technology that entrances multitudes of consumers. Quite conceivably, it is a combination of these factors that has propelled Nike to the top of its industry. However, not all of Nike’s story is ideal. In recent years, the company has faced criticism in connection with its use of contract labor in developing nations. The purpose of this case is to provide an understanding of the company’s background, its general business strategy, and its use of contract labor. The Athletic Apparel and Footwear Industry The athletic apparel and footwear industry experienced steady growth for more than two decades, beginning in the early 1980’s. For example, in the U.S.A. alone, consumer spending on athletic footwear increased by 10 percent during the first six months of 2005 (Quinn, 2006). Consumers were not just professional athletes, but ordinary men, women, and...

Contracts - Proposal

...Q1. Distinguished between the term agreement and contract under the Contracts Act 1950 (Revised 1974) A contract is legally binding agreement reached between two parties, the terms of which the courts have the authority and obligation to enforce. An agreement is less formal creation of an obligation between two parties. An agreement usually lacks one or more of the essential elements that are required to be present in order to form a valid contract that will be considered legally enforceable by curt of law. Contract outline, the terms of the relationship that should be formed between two parties to the contract. An agreement also outlines the terms of relationship between the two. However, the difference is that the contract outline is far more rigid than that of a contract. The essential difference between an agreement and a contract is that usually an agreement will only modify a contract that is already in place but does not place an obligation on either one of the parties to provide consideration to the other party, which a contract requires. A contract can be involve in the exchange of promises between the parties to the contract, while an agreement may simply involve one party accepting the offer from another party. The approach taken by the Contracts Act 1950 (Revised 1974) to distinguish between agreement and a contract was noted by the Supreme Court in the case, Beca (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd v Tan Choong Kuang & Anor [1986] 2 MLJ 390. It was held that there...

Corporate Governance Role of the Media

...The Corporate Governance Role of the Media Alexander Dyck* Harvard Business School And Luigi Zingales University of Chicago May 2002 Abstract Do media play any role in corporate governance? In this paper we argue that media pressure corporate managers and directors to behave in ways that are “socially acceptable”. Sometimes this coincides with shareholders’ value maximization, others not. We provide both anecdotal and systematic evidence that media affect companies’ policy toward the environment and the amount of corporate resources that are diverted to the sole advantage of controlling shareholders. Our results have important consequences for the focus of the corporate governance debate and for the feasibility of reforms aimed at improving corporate governance around the world. * We thank Mehmet Beceren for assistance in preparing the data and Rakhesh Khurana, Jay Lorsch,, Forest Reinhardt, Richard Vietor, Andy Zelleke and seminar participants at Harvard Business School for helpful comments on an earlier draft. Alexander Dyck gratefully acknowledges financial support from the Division of Research of Harvard Business School and Luigi Zingales from the George Stigler Center at the University of Chicago. In April 1992 the Wall Street Journal published a strange ad. It was a full-page picture of a silhouette of the Board of Directors of Sears Roebuck with the title: the “non-performing assets of Sears”. Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...

Football, Violence and Social Identity

...Downloaded by [University of Ottawa] at 14:44 24 March 2014 Football, Violence and Social Identity Downloaded by [University of Ottawa] at 14:44 24 March 2014 As the 1994 World Cup competition in the USA again demonstrates, football is one of the most popular participant and spectator sports around the world. The fortunes of teams can have great significance for the communities they represent at both local and national levels. Social and cultural analysts have only recently started to investigate the wide variety of customs, values and social patterns that surround the game in different societies. This volume contributes to the widening focus of research by presenting new data and explanations of football-related violence. Episodes of violence associated with football are relatively infrequent, but the occasional violent events which attract great media attention have their roots in the rituals of the matches, the loyalties and identities of players and crowds and the wider cultures and politics of the host societies. This book provides a unique cross-national examination of patterns of order and conflict surrounding football matches from this perspective with examples provided by expert contributors from Scotland, England, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Argentina and the USA. This book will be of interest to an international readership of informed soccer and sport enthusiasts and students of sport, leisure, society, deviance and culture. Richard Giulianotti, Norman...

Managing Change

...Managing Change Initiatives: Fantasy or Reality? The Case of Public Sector Organisations Ebrahim Soltani University of Kent Business School, Canterbury, UK Pei-chun Lai University of Strathclyde Business School, Glasgow, UK Abstract It is becoming a commonplace statement that change initiative programmes are key tools to organisational long-term success. To this end, the last two decades have witnessed a surge of interest in the take-up of various change initiative programmes. Organisational change initiatives, we are told by many commentators, can maximise shareholder value (i.e. economic value theory) and develop organisational capabilities (i.e. organisational capability theory). Specifically, in recent years, as companies have been confronted by the conditions of heightened competition, globalisation, advancements in communications and information technologies, economic recession and simultaneously search for excellence, so the desire to take up change initiatives has interested the majority of leading organisations. At the same time, however, the analysis of the prospects for the majority of change management tools reveals so many deep-seated barriers to change with the consequence of little success in practice. This paper explores this apparent contradiction, arguing that, despite a heightened interest in the take-up of change initiatives, very few change programmes produce an improvement in bottom-line, exceed the company’s cost of capital, or even improve service...

Mattel Cases Study

...Mattel Recalls 2007 Communication Implications for Quality Control, Outsourcing, and Consumer Relations [ABSTRACT] In August 2007, America's largest toy manufacturer announced the first of what would become five recalls involving 21 million toys—most of which were manufactured in China. This case study and teaching note examine a corporate response to a global crisis and consider the unique communications challenges facing a corporation that operates in an international, crosscultural arena. The teaching note critiques the response’s suitability to the level and impact of the crisis and recommends alternatives. It illustrates that communicators should be cognizant of their international stakeholders and should proactively manage global issues of public concern such as outsourcing and product safety. An example would be that to avert future recalls, Mattel should work closely with its Chinese suppliers and government agencies to implement realistic quality control solutions for which it can be held accountable. The company must reassure stakeholders that outsourcing to China does not mean sacrificing quality. Regaining consumer confidence and controlling the dissemination of product safety information requires strong corporate communicators who can delicately and deliberately balance complex relationships.
