The Alamo The 300-year-old Mission San Antonio de Valero was the site of a pinnacle battle during the Texas Revolution in March of 1836. Here, 189 Texas defenders held off Mexican General Santa Anna's 4,000 soldiers for thirteen days.
Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) was established in 1718 as the city's first mission. On the east side of Alamo Plaza is the famous spot in Texas where 189 defenders fell on March 6, 1836, after repeated attacks by Mexican General Santa Anna's army which sealed it in lexicon of U.S. history.
More than 2.5 million people a year visit the 4.2 acre complex known worldwide as "The Alamo." Most come to see theold mission where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days against the Centralist army of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Although the Alamo fell in the early morning hours of March 6, 1836, the death of the Alamo Defenders has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty. The memories of James Bowie, David Crockett, and William B. Travis are as powerful today as when the Texan Army under Sam Houston shouted "Remember the Alamo!" as it routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The Alamo has been managed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1905. Located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Alamo represents nearly 300 years of history. Three buildings - the Shrine, Long Barrack Museum and Gift Museum - house exhibits on the Texas Revolution and Texas History. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the beautiful Alamo Gardens. Just a short distance from the River Walk, the Alamo is a "must see" for all who come to San Antonio.
The Alamo is open every day of the year except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our hours are 9:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. on Sunday. To better serve visitors, the Alamo will

Battle of the Alamo

...The Battle of the Alamo Abstract This paper is a battle analysis of the Battle of the Alamo, which took place in 1836. It reviews the location and its significance within the war for independence that was taking placing during that time. The actions by the Texas revolutionary forces and Mexicans leading up to and during the battle are listed within the writing. It reveals the issue between the force stationed at the Alamo and their superior, General Sam Houston. The defenders at the Alamo didn’t receive support that was needed in order to provide intelligence of the Mexican force that was on its way. On the other hand, they didn’t listen to the order to vacate the fort. These are a couple of the major problems that took place before and during the battle. Although the battle was essential to inspiring the rest of the Texan forces, it leads me to believe that this important conflict could have turned out differently. The Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the Alamo is the most famous battle of the Texas revolution that took place in the early 1800s. “For many Americans and most Texans, the battle has become a symbol of patriotic sacrifice” (Hardin, 2010). Even though the Texans lost the battle, it contributed to the successful war for independence against Mexico. There were, at least, two decisions that may have altered the consequence of the Battle of the Alamo if more cautiously considered. The defenders at the Alamo didn’t receive support that was needed in order to...

Determinants of Basketball Salaries

...Determinants of Basketball players salaries For my research question i have chosen to find out what the determinants are when it comes to the salary of basketball players. I find this topic interesting because I have always been a huge fan of basketball. When I was younger i used to also wonder why only certain players had their jersey's sold in stores. Another interesting fact about this topic is that, recently there had been a NBA lockout. This drawn out situation had fans wondering how long basketball would be on pause for. When it comes to the salary of basketball players, variables that I would like explore that i feel that salary is dependent on are Age, Experience, nationality, position and average points during a game and the salary cap. Another interesting factor to take into Similar literature i have found are topics related to each one of my variables on the uoguelph lib database. A journal i have found on the uoguelph database published under the name The Windsor Star talks about the salary cap and the effects it has on the salary of the NBA players. This journal also takes into account the best-selling retro jerseys in the NBA. Popularity can be an attribute to the salary of the players as well. I have also found a thesis paper done by The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business at the Colorado College written by Nathaniel Brodman. In this paper, it takes into account the several variables that might be over looked. The basic rule of economics of...

...Fan Bases Fans are important for motivating their team and making it hard for opponents to play well, whether they are bandwagon fans, completely berserk, or almost non-existent. Loud, lively fans motivate their players to play better and make it a disadvantage for the opponents to play them. The Cameron Crazies of Duke Basketball are some of the most dedicated fans in basketball. For rivalry games, over a thousand Cameron Crazies camp for three months in Krzyzewskiville, or the makeshift city the fans make outside Cameron Indoor Stadium, just to get a spot for the game. They go to every game prepared with chants and have even made cheerleaders of the opposing team cry. Some television networks had to turn off the sound temporarily during the game because of the chants. Next, bandwagon fans only root for their favorite team when they are on a winning streak or have won a championship. After winning a NBA Championship in 2012, the Miami Heat was notorious for having the most bandwagon fans. It was especially obvious when fans walked out of Game Six in the 2013 NBA Finals a few minutes early and missed watching the Heat comeback for the win. With the 2013 NBA Championship win, they have the most bandwagon fans in basketball. Finally, some fans almost never attend any games. The Eastern Michigan Eagles have the lowest attendance in college football with the average of a sixth of the stadium being filled each game. More people show up to watch big time programs like LSU practice...

He declared his eligibility for the NBA Draft upon graduation, and was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. As a rookie, Bryant earned himself a reputation as a high-flyer and a fan favorite by winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers to three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002. A heated feud between the duo and a loss in the 2004 NBA Finals was followed by O'Neal's trade from the Lakers after the 2003–04 season. Following O'Neal's departure Bryant became the cornerstone of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise. He led the NBA in scoring during the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons, setting numerous scoring records in the process. In 2006, Bryant scored a career-high 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, the second most points scored in a single game in NBA history, second only to Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962. He was awarded the regular season's Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) in 2008. Heros

...THE WORD HERO JACK MOORE ENGLISH 122 MATT BOOKER APRIL 15, 2012 When someone mentions the word hero it doesn’t have the same meaning as it once did. The definition of a hero is one with heroic qualities in the opinion if others. To me or you, however a hero can be much more. Whether you believe an athlete should be a hero or deserves to be one. Most kids believe that they are. They buy their jerseys and put their posters on their bedroom walls. They watch them on TV or go to their games and look up to them like they are superhuman. Being able to dunk a basketball or throw a football down a football field may not seem heroic to the average person but to kid it is. To the average person they are just adults getting paid million to play a kid game. There are some exceptions to this there have been athletes who gave up their careers or postpone their careers to fight for this country. These are real sports heroes. Kids need heroes whether it is an athlete or someone else they provide kids with someone to look up to help them set goals for themselves. (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 2013) “Heroes provide models of exemplary behavior to emulate. Heroes inspire kids to achieve more than they thought they were capable of, to find strength when they thought they didn't have any more, to follow a code of moral conduct when it would be easier and maybe more popular not to. But when it comes to sports figures, Americans seem a little confused about what defines the hero. While I, like...

Comparing and Contrasting Moneyball - Film and Novel

...Chris Uhle 11-17-2014 Global Sports Business Moneyball When Michael Lewis’ Moneyball was released it officially announced Billy Beane’s new way of thinking to the rest of the world. Before the book was written, only a small group of people really had a full understanding of how analytics were changing the evaluation process in the sport of baseball. Billy Beane had always been using unconventional ways in finding undervalued players, but Lewis’ book brought his in depth strategy to the forefront of the sport. In 2011, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill starred in the film Moneyball. The movie did keep the same basic storyline as the book, however there were many differences between the two. One of the biggest disparities between the book and the film that I saw was in the way the film portrayed how the idea of Moneyball started. One of the first scenes in the movie has Billy Beane in Cleveland to discuss trade possibilities with the Indians. Beane notices that one of Shapiro’s (Cleveland GM) assistants is dictating who is tradable and confronts him after the meeting. The movie says this is the first time Beane is introduced to the world of sabermetrics and advanced analytics. While this makes for a good storyline, Billy Beane actually got the idea from former A’s GM, Sandy Alderson, not Peter Brand like in movie. This is a great exaggeration from the book as Brand is basically credited with the entire idea. In fact, Peter Brand was not even the real name of Beane’s assistant GM...

Kobe Bryant

...Kobe Bryant is my favorite player in the NBA, and also my favorite athlete in all of sports. His career is getting close to being done, but he still continues to play at a superstar level. Kobe has played over forty five thousand minutes in his career, so it’s amazing how can continue to play at such a high level with all those miles on his body. He suffered his first major injury of his career a few weeks ago against the Golden State Warriors. He tore his Achilles tendon, and had surgery to repair it the next day. That injury forced Kobe to miss this seasons playoffs. He is expected to return in the next six to nine months. I don’t remember why or how I started to like Kobe Bryant, I just know I have been a fan of his ever since I can remember. Kobe Bryant was drafted sixteenth overall in 1996 by the Charlotte Hornets, and was then traded to the Los Angels Lakers on draft day. He won the slam dunk contest as a rookie. Just four years into his career. Kobe and Shaquille O’Neal teamed up to win three straight NBA championships. After losing in the NBA Finals in 2004, the Lakers traded Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe became the cornerstone for the Lakers. In 2006, Bryant scored a career-high 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, the second most points scored in a single game in NBA history. In 2008, Kobe won the NBA most valuable player award. Basketball in Latin America

...In Latin America, the popularity of the sport is growing rapidly and the most recent of talent into the NBA is migrating from Latin America. The cultural popularity of the sport was growing exponentially and is well documented in China with the likes of Yao Ming and Jeremy Lin who are Asian sensations. With Latin American backgrounds integrating into the game of basketball, I wonder how these international translations are in turn changing the game we see at home. In Latin America, where the climate and geographies are so much different than the one in the United States, we find growth in basketball. Though the NBA in Latin America is growing, it is still not a hit in Central and South America. Though whenever you go either it is Latin America, China, America, etc… there is always someone playing the game. Even in the likes of Mexico, they are mostly known for militant based political revolution than anything else, but basketball courts do exist. The courts might be used for other things like farming during the day, but you will always see some kid playing and working on his game. Just like what I do when I am in my hometown hooping outside of my house, no court just the concrete and the hoop I have next to my garage. The growth of basketball throughout Latin America region is unexpected, only because they compete for national attention in their number one sport soccer. Basketball has to compete in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and...
