Topic: Alcohol (Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18?) Impact of alcohol on life; A study of Metropolitan Columbia.

Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18? Starting, the United States has a minimum drinking age of 21. The minimum legal drinking age of 21 has proven to save lives and reduce negative effects in people who consume alcohol legally. Compared to other countries has proven a safe drinking age. In addition to all of the positive effects of having this law set in place, there are plenty of ways parents can prevent their adolescent from consuming alcohol. The evidence of the minimum drinking age of 21 saving young people's lives is overwhelmingly true. Since the minimum legal drinking age was raised from 18 to 21 in 1984 there has been a twenty percent decrease in fatal accidents amongst younger people. The strategy of congress refusing highway dollars to those states was enough to make them all adhere to setting a higher minimum drinking age. The states that have the strictest laws against using fake identification to purchase alcohol show a direct correlation to reduced alcohol related fatalities among people 21 and under. An estimate by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that increasing the minimum legal drinking age to 21 has saved the lives of about 27,000 young adults age 18-20. Approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die each year because of alcohol related accidents; of those 5,000 kids 1,700 of them are college students. 1,600 of those killed annually are from alcohol related homicides, and 300 suicides. About 190,000 people under the age of 21 visited the emergency room for alcohol related incidents in 2008 alone. The negative effects of consuming alcohol before the age of 21 are proven and well documented. Binge drinking is a major problem with younger people in general but more

...9 -4 0 4 -0 6 8 OCTOBER 20, 2003 JEFFREY T. POLZER INGRID VARGAS HILLARY ANGER ELFENBEIN Henry Tam and the MGI Team Henry Tam felt tired and extremely frustrated. He was halfway through his final semester in the MBA program at Harvard Business School (HBS), and things were not going as expected. Spring break was about to start, but Henry, like many others in the class of 2002, was feeling the pain of the worst job market in over a decade. Henry recalled the troubled sentiment around campus: Going to business school during the aftermath of the Internet crash changed everything. Before the crash, the feeling was that if you graduated from HBS, you could take on the world. Now people were feeling a lot more insecurity. I was having some doubt about my own capabilities—about what I could accomplish on my own. Anxious to test his abilities and distinguish himself beyond the standard curriculum, Henry had decided to enter the School’s annual business plan contest. About six weeks earlier, in late January, Henry had teamed with HBS classmate Dana Soiman and the founders of start-up company Music Games International (MGI). The MGI founders—an HBS alumnus (MBA ’87) and two professional musicians—later brought two additional students from other institutions onto the team, creating a group composed of diverse views and talents. (See Exhibit 1 for team member bios.) The team was dynamic but very conflicted, and progress on the business plan had been slow. They had a promising product:...

Preliminary Analysis Memo

...I requested Sasha’s parents for 2 hours of their time; however, it took longer that it was expected. In addition, the selected material for the reading aloud session was also quite long for Sasha to read. During, BRI, Sasha was quite shy and her responses were rather short. I should have asked follow-up questions and avoid using the BRI in a too restrictive and rigid way. During the BRI, it is necessary to ask questions about the reader’s sociocultural and linguistic background, as well as, reading preferences. It would be also important to ask questions related to language use at home and family’s literacy practices. References Burke, K. (1980). The reading interview. In B. P. Farr & D. J. Henry Tam Case- Roles and Responsibilities

...of the founders Sasha, Igor, Roman; HBS group consists of Dana and Henry; and there are individuals, Dav and Alex. While Sasha and Alex were viewed as Americanized Russians Henry and Dana perceived Sasha, Igor and Roman as “the Russians”. The differences were not only in team compositions but also around who brings what to the table. While Henry and Dana thought themselves as strategic contributor Sasha perceived Henry and Dana as mere business plan writer. Igor expected Henry and Dana to contribute not only with the business plan but also with the vision and direction. It is not clear what role Dav is going to play. Roman is the artist as well technical guy but is being involved in strategic vision brainstorming meetings. Alex brings important skills: his experience in the media industry and his skills from business school. Main problem lies in the area of not having clearly defined roles and responsibilities. And the lack of roles and responsibilities can be attributed to the fact that there is no clear leader. The team failed miserably in discussing and defining the values, vision, and norm to achieve the common goal. The organization structure is also completely missing. Without addressing the issue of structure and roles & responsibilities Henry will not able to make much progress. Henry has good relationship with Sasha, Igor, Dana and not bad ones with rest of the team member. Igor is the center point of the trust network which Include Roman, Sasha, Igor most powerful...

...frustrations arise between the team members because there expectations for one another have not been clearly defined. For example, Henry and Dana saw themselves as strategic contributors to the business plan and direction of the company, while Sasha seemed to see them more as interns or business plan writers. Igor on the other hand, agreed with Henry and Dana’s vision of their roles within the team. Without a clear leader there was no vision or core group values system established. Some of the members wanted to market the product towards an educational route while other team members wanted to focus more on the entertainment industry. After the second meeting, Alex noted that the meeting was ‘’very unorganized brainstorming and there was here was no structure.’’ There was no one to control or guide the team or assess the team’s overall progress. Everyone was constantly drawn back to lengthy ‘’brainstorming sessions’’ on all aspects of the company’s direction without any unified direction being established. Prior to the formation of the new business plan team, roles at MGI were clearly defined. Igor explained that ‘’Roman and myself –we two are not from the business world, we are musicians. This is our idea our creative vision. Sasha is the one that keeps us in check. Sash has experience in business. I...

...function in the team seems like a wise choice since more ideas mean better productivity and creativity, before we see the first meeting. The whole team seems like to be functioning like a family with extremely loyal best friends who are capable of handling conflict and are cooperative towards the newcomers – Dana and Henry. However, the team is facing the issue of improper management of multiculturalism and diversity and there is low performance. Sasha does not think Dana has the practical experience and Roman and Igor do not understand what Dana wants from the project. The brainstorming sessions, according to Dana and Henry seem to drag on too long. It has an impact on the team’s processes and it affects the participation of the team members– for example, Sasha is highly stubborn and opinionated and highly aggressive and passionate which is good in terms of keeping the team together however, the way he attacks Dana during discussion sessions is leading to an atmosphere of conflict. Henry Tam and the Mgi Team Case

...College of Music student, Dav Clar – a MIT graduate student, and Alexander (Sasha) Gimpelson, Igor Tkachenko, and Roman Yakub – the MGI founders, seems like an ideal team, with each member bringing different experiences and technical skills to help with the business plan contest at HBS. However, as we will see in this paper, interpersonal dynamics, a lack of clear leadership, resulting in unclear team goals and individual roles, and a lack of healthy group norms, contribute to an ineffective team process at MGI. With the deadline less than three weeks away and the team without even a first draft of the business plan, Henry is certain that the team would not meet the deadline if it continued to function as it had so far. Case Analysis Team Process is defined as the team members’ behaviors and interactions, occurring over time. It is through this process that all of the members’ expertise and knowledge, along with other inputs, functioning in the group environment, manufacture an output. MGI’s team process seems ineffective, resulting a lot of conflicts among the subgroups of the MGI team and inability to complete the business plan. At the “launch” of the team in Mellon Hall on HBS campus, it was clear that the team did not have any specific role for each of the team members, nor was there a clear leadership arrangement. “..It seemed to me that Sasha saw our role as business plan writers, specifically for the contest, whereas Igor understood...
