Honors Scholarship Proposal

To create a scholarship for LSC-CyFair students actively enrolled in honors courses or taking honors by contract which will aide students enrolled in these courses and serve as a recruitment and retention incentive to both the honors program and the college at large. III. Introduction a. Background
As part of an ongoing student outreach campaign for the LSC-CyFair Honors Program, the Honors Student Organization has participated in many campus events this last year. Interested students frequently ask whether or not the Honors Program offers a scholarship to its students. At the present time LSC-CyFair does not offer a scholarship to its honors students. We believe creating a scholarship will not only help students taking honors classes which typically require additional materials or expenses in addition to those already incurred in the regular section, but can used as a marketing device for the honors program and the campus. Over the last couple of years, representatives of the Honors Student Organization have meet with Student Outreach to encourage publicity of the Honors Program at Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District high schools and local National Honors Society advisors; the addition of an honors scholarship would be a powerful selling point to both students and their parents when our advisors visit their school and during the district’s annual college night. Additionally, three of the systems campuses already offer their honors students scholarship. By creating the honors scholarship at LSC-CyFair, this campus will offer similar opportunities available at other campuses throughout the system. b. Review of Literature i. Honors Program Mission Statement
The mission of the Lone Star College-CyFair Honors Program is to augment existing programs on campus and to reaffirm the college’s commitment to excellence. Faculty and staff involved with the program will identify, recruit, and challenge academically motivated students and provide them with enriching, flexible options to develop their potential. In doing so, the program will also give faculty and staff the opportunity for renewal and innovation.1 ii. Honors Program Vision Statement
The Lone Star College-CyFair Honors Program will be an example of academic and personal excellence at Lone Star College-CyFair, both in the students it develops and the faculty and staff who mentor them.2 iii. Lone Star College System Multi-College Operating Philosophy
Resources shall be allocated, in such a manner to guarantee optimal levels of quality for all programs at all of the colleges.3 iv. Lone Star College – Kingwood Honors Scholarship
Lone Star College-Kingwood offers students enrolled in the Honors Program Presidential Scholarships based on academic achievement. Four scholarships of $250.00 are awarded each semester and can be used to cover expenses associated with tuition, fees, and books.4 v. Lone Star College – Montgomery Honors Scholarship
There are currently two types of scholarships available to LSCS -Montgomery Honors Program participants.

Honors Course Scholarship
Requirements for applying for the Honors Course Scholarship include:

* current enrollment in one honors course, * completion of the current honors course with a grade of B or better, and * an overall grade point average of 3.5 at the time of application.

Honors Contract Scholarship
Requirements for applying for the Honors Contract Scholarship include:

* currently working on an honors contract,# successful completion of the current honors contract by the end of the semester, * completion of the contract course with a grade of B or better by the end of the semester, and * an overall grade point average of 3.5 at the end of the current semester.

Eligible students may apply for both scholarships, but only one scholarship will be awarded to an applicant.

Scholarship Amount
The scholarship amount for each of the scholarships will be awarded for the following semester based on enrollment in that semester.
$125 for students enrolled in 3-5 semester credit hours
$250 for students enrolled in 6-8 semester credit hours$375 for students enrolled in 9-11 semester credit hours
$500 for students enrolled in 12 or more semester credit hrs5 vi. Lone Star College – Tomball Honors Scholarship
Each semester three Honors Program students are awarded $500 scholarships to Lone Star College-Tomball. These scholarships will be awarded at the end of each Fall and Spring semester, based on the evaluation of each student's work by the Honors Council. An email explaining the details of the process will be sent to each student currently involved in an Honors Contract or enrolled in an Honors Course.6 IV. Proposal c. Objectives i. Create five $300 scholarships to be awarded each semester ii. Create a committee to determine the eligibility criteria for Honors Scholarship and make the scholarship application. iii. Include Honors Scholarship information on the school website, in the brochures, and as a feature of Student Outreach. a. Justification iv. LSC-CyFair is a larger campus than LSC-Tomball; we thereby feel justified in asking for two more scholarships per semester than Tomball; also, we have the Fairbanks Center and a new satellite campus on the way. v. $300 is more than LSC-Tomball offers its student, $250, but it is less than LSC-Montgomery offers its students, $500; we thereby feel justified in asking for a competitive amount within the range offered by other campuses in the system. vi. The scholarship must be offered each semester because student criteria changes per semester as does honors course enrollment. d. Honors Scholarship Committee Members i. Honors Student Organization Officer ii. Faculty Honors Council iii. Professor (Must teach honors sections or contracts) iv. Professor (Must teach ethics or psychology) v. Administration | | e. Time Schedule i. The committee should meet and make a final proposal during the fall semester 2010 so the Honors Scholarship may be included in the next budget. ii. The first scholarships are awarded during the 2011/2012 school year

V. Conclusion
The LSC-CyFair Honors Scholarship is an investment in the success of its students and in the future growth of the college. It will increase student registration in honors classes, and encourage more students to enroll at the college; the additional students recruited from high school honors classes and National Honors Societies across the district will compensate the school for its contribution towards its current students. It will also help the college to make its honors program more unified with the honors programs offered system wide. We, therefore, urge you to accept our proposition and help us. Help us to defray some of the additional costs incurred by being academically motivated. Help us to build a stronger honors program. Help us to reach out to students on campus and encourage them to register for honors courses. Help us to reach out to our potential student populace in community high schools. Help us to make LSC-CyFair’s honors program competitive with like programs in the system. Help us to continue our tradition and commitment to excellence. Help us, and you will most certainly help yourselves as we all strive to achieve the dream.
