School Is Bad For Children

In School Is Bad For Children, Holt gave a negative review of the education received in a public school. He started off by saying that most children are better off before they ever set foot in school. Holt goes on by explaining how a baby learns how to sit up, stand, walk, and speak all on their own. When they start school the teachers are not there to help the children, but instead tell them that they are wrong, says Holt. He said that some states are starting to let students go out into the world and get hands on experience, which he thought was a good idea. Holt thinks that children should not be forced to go to school if they don’t want to, but we should make it so that they do want to go. He also believes that school isn’t right for everyone and that if it’s not that they shouldn’t waste their time, instead they should get a job. In School Is Bad For Children, Holt’s view that school is not the best thing for all children was very apparent. I agree with him that it isn’t always the right place for everyone, but I thought that he was a little bit too extreme with some of his thoughts and reasons. I think that children shouldn’t feel like they are being forced to go to school, that they should enjoy it in some way. I recently graduated high school though and I know the feeling, of not wanting to be there or not caring about school like I should. Holt puts a lot of blame on the teachers which can have a big impact on the experiences that you have when learning. If school was more enjoyable then student would want to go to school, and it wouldn’t feel like it was a mandatory thing. In my own experience I’ve learned that I am a hands on learner, so when Holt was suggesting going out to different businesses or having people come in to teach different subject with real life experience I thought that it was a really good idea.

Rhetorical Analysis Of School Is Bad For Children By John Holt

...Holt’s essay “School Is Bad For Children” is full of rhetorical devices, however, they are not as effective as Holt intended them to be. He begins his essay with a strong introduction, then changes his tone, only taught at a private school and not a public school, over uses repetition, uses too many hyperboles, and makes assumptions of his points without proper research. All of which cause the essay to fade in it’s effectiveness, thus giving the reader a hard time to finish reading. In the introduction Holt tells the general experience that school kid on the first day of school has. This gives the reader a pleasant imagery of image of an excited, young, lively child. Then, changes his tone unexpectedly, turning the essay into a different direction. Now, Holt begins to use sentences such as, “In a great many of ways he learns that he is worthless , untrustworthy, fit only to take other people’s orders, a blank sheet for people to write on” (Holt 73). This dramatic change of tone...

Homeschool vs. Public School

...Homeschool vs. Public School Comm 155 8/3/12 Elizabeth Harris Homeschool vs. Public School There are many forms of education that a person may receive today. Two important forms of education include homeschooling and public schooling. Although homeschooling and public schools both have benefits, they each have disadvantages to their curricula and their social environment. Education in public schools isn’t necessarily the problem as much as the teachers not enforcing the work. Because of this parents have taken initiative to provide better education to their children themselves. By homeschooling, parents also get the advantage of having that one-on-one time with their children, but this could result in the child withdrawing from social activities throughout his or her life. It is important to consider many factors before deciding rather to send your child to public school or chose homeschooling. There are a few differences one should consider before deciding on a public school or homeschooling. For instance, in public schools there are classrooms full of students and with homeschooling it’s more one-on-one. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. The good is you have that quality time with your child. The bad is by having this quality time it can affect the child’s social skills. This can then result in your child’s adulthood by not knowing how to speak to people of importance such as loan consultants, professor’s, or even people of the opposite sex. On the other...

It Is Just About Me, Not Really Good at All

...ASSIGNMENT Version 01 Task: To what extend do you agree with the statement: “School is bad for students?” Support your claims with appropriate grounds and warrants. People may think that children must go to school; thus, almost children go to school every day (this sentence has a problem in how you express the idea) However, arguments have persisted as to whether school is good (can be replaced by 'beneficial') for children or not. Although there are convincing argument on both sides, I strongly believe that it is bad for children because school not only prevents children’s creativeness, but also has negative impacts on children’s (their) health. Most of (omit) educators claim that school is encouraging children to be individual and different (how does school encourage children to be individual and different? I think you should clarify this a little bit); nevertheless, it is a fact that school is crushing (stifle/ inhibit) kids’ creativeness ( can replaced by 'creativity' to avoid repetition) by asking almost (virtually) all of them to do the same things and not accepting creative children’s characteristics. The majority of students are cast in the same mould made by educators, thinking that model is standard for people who children will be. (express in a clearer way). These acts (not suitable) are the root of being not interested in exploring new ideas or enlarging knowledge since children are getting used of following ( tend to depend on )others’ directions instead of...

Students with Bad Vices Chapter I

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study The rate of students involved in bad vices such as smoking, hard drinking, gambling and sometimes illegal drugs, addiction in computer games and variety of gadgets are serious problems that need diplomatic actions. There are lots of reasons why the youth nowadays are being involved in bad vices. One of the major reasons per observation is the lack of quality relationship with their parents because a lot of parents are just being parents who provide material and physical needs and forget the needs of their children in terms of the emotional and moral aspects. High School senior students are driven to do bad things just to satisfy themselves with their bad vices, like stealing money from their parents, cutting their classes hours, getting into troubles in the community or even inside the school. These things may lead to even more unlikely things that they may even do notorious things to their people. The child-parent relationship is even gone worse because youths are being more and more stubborn while the parents are losing their temper and patience to understand the situation of their children. Parents tend to become stricter and they are being more authoritative to their children that may lead to a rebellion against them. Parents should not only be simply just a parent, but they also be a best friend to their children. They should spend more quality time with their family, talk to them intimately so they could...

Home School vs. Public Education

...and developing. If children find themselves to distract while being in a classroom with their peers, may be the better choice. To start the first thing that comes to most parent’s mind is the amount of time, and money that you have to put in when it comes to choosing. When it come to home schooling, you do spend a lot of time with your children, which is not bad. There are also pros, and cons of public education with the pros being the child is receiving an education from a professionally trained teacher. They are better prepared in everyday teachings that the child will receive. The curriculum is outlined for the year on what the child will be taught, what is expected to be taught to the child. Children are learning how to socialize and realize how different a world we have. There is no hiding that fact. Depending on your day-to-day life, this might be easy for you. This is the first thing you have to look at when making that choice for your children. When it comes to public school, you get to send your children to a different location for anywhere between four to eight hours, and this is not bad if your a working parent. If children find that they get side tracked while attempting to work alone then public schooling may be more helpful. When it comes to teaching a student, both educational ways have completely different ideas on how they think the best way. Public Schools use a general system that seems to work for a majority of the students. Home School is based a lot on the...

Critical Thinking

...issue of child behavior in school age children is growing rapidly and is far more worst than it was ten years ago. Some of the key role players in the behavior of children today are bad parenting, lack of respect from children, technology, like video games, cell phones, I pad, I phones, the prolong use of television and what is available for them to watch. All of these things is a distraction for children and is a part of their over all behavior. It’s not hard to see that the attitudes of some children have change over the years. All you have to do is look and listen. The children today seem to have an attitude about everything even at a young age. Some of them can’t even tell you what they are angry about. The evidence you will here in this paper is not only based on my own personal experiences but also from other researched articles. When I was growing up we had no choice but to respect our parents and elders. Talking back or acting act was not tolerated at all. Parents took the time to connect with their children instead of letting them sit in front of a television all day, or play on a computer. We had a set television time, bedtime, and playtime. And we didn’t have a problem following it because that was the rules. Children today have too much freedom. They have lost all respect for their parents and other including themselves. Their attention spans are very short and the littlest thing will distract them. As part of my evidence that children behavior is worst today...

Why Is Suspension Bad In School

...Why Change Something So Good? Why is suspension bad? Are schools not doing all they can do for disobedient children? Do we really need to change the way we handle these kids entirely? Throughout school’s history, suspension has been there as a convenient and familiar way to handle naughty children. Even today it still is the best way to handle a hurting and disobeying child. Although non-suspensions can be good for some kids, schools should continue to suspend, because, kids that are kept in school could do even more damage, isolation is a better way to for the kid to handle his/her problems, and keeps the other kids safe and teaches them discipline. If kids are kept in school more damage could be done to the school. 73% of parents who have had their kids suspended is happy that they are confined and away from peers. Most students that get into suspension get it while doing wrong with peers. Keep them away from the others and they can’t do as much damage. Although some people feel that suspension just feeds the fire in the student, do we really need some perceived as delinquents running around with the better kids in the school? Think about this, the rate of students that get suspended each year is about 20% since we have been suspending them from the school it has gone down by 1.27% each year. On that pace in 8 years the...

Failing School System

...Failing School Systems: Are Students to Blame? The United States educational system is failing. This topic is in the news repeatedly. Failing schools are a problem that must be fixed. However, it cannot be fixed until we figure out its real cause. Many people put the blame on the government, school officials, and teachers. Critics such as Geoffrey Canada, the founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, say that the problem lies within the public schools. He states, “Public schools are bad, privately managed charter schools are good” (Ravitch 1). This may be a true statement but there must also be an underlying cause for low school performance. Nobody ever thinks the students may have something to do with this problem. The students are the ones who are taking the tests, paying attention in class and completing the homework. Nevertheless, from another view it may not always be the child’s fault. Maybe other factors contribute to this. Some students want to succeed but they do not always have the necessary resources to do so. These reasons are student’s determination, financial limitations, family support, insufficient housing, and poor nutrition. Some students do want to succeed in life however successful needs to be defined in order to figure out criteria for success. According to Merriam-Webster, success is an “a degree of succeeding” and “a favorable or desired outcome”. In other words, success is having a series of goals set in order to achieve a bigger goal or accomplishment...

Solutions to Childhood Obesity

...past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. Children with childhood obesity face many health problems like type two diabetes, high blood, pressure and are at risk for many types of cancers. The lack of children’s physical activity today is one of the major factors that lead to obesity as well as eating unhealthy diets, the increased food portions and the lack of information about healthy choices. Dr. Anand, the Executive Director for the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, describes the prevalence of obesity as being “at epidemic proportions” (Center for Nutrition Policy & Promotion, 2008, pg. 2). This statement was made in 1998. Since then, the rates of obesity have continued to rise dramatically and if we don’t do anything to stop it these numbers will keep rising. Many people think that dealing with obesity is only the parent’s responsibility, but what we need to realize is that it is not only the parents responsibility, fighting this epidemic has also become the responsibility of our schools and communities. Obesity education needs to be in our homes, schools and our communities to raise awareness of the causes, as well as the risks. We need to take action in helping reduce this health problem which is affecting more and more children each day. Parents and children need to know how to eat a healthier diet and understand how exercise can help reduce or even prevent...

You Can't Touch Me

...the headmistress office (Mrs. Baynes). Mrs Baynes takes a quick talk with Campell and short after Mr. Goade gets called into Mrs. Baynes office, she is not happy about that he has taking hold in the boy’s ear. The following day, is Mr. Baynes called to the office again, and the boy’s parents had said that the boy’s ear is in inflammation and that he cannot hear optimally. Mr. Goade ends up in trouble, which talk about suspension. 2. Ian Goade is a primary school teacher, he is intelligent, and people do not understand why a person so intelligent like him, ends up like a teacher. However, Ian likes his job and believes herself like the man he is. He thinks that the children/students looks forward to him, because he is a man. Ian is a determined man. He wants that all children have it good in school. When he grap’s Campell in his ear, I don’t think it’s because he want Campell something bad, he just want him to behave properly, but today teachers can’t touch the children without getting in trouble, so it was a bad decision. 3. Willowbrooke

...The Willowbrook experiment was an opportunistic experiment in which mentally ill children were the victims of and parents were deceived into giving their consent through unethical means such as blackmail. Children were living in a school that was overcrowded and hepatitis was rampant. Instead of the school raising their sanitation standards they took advantage of this and began experimenting with the virus and injecting it into the children. These children had no idea what they were having done to them and no way to understand given their mental state. Some parents were told they would only accept their child if they placed them in the hepatitis wing and gave consent to be involved in the experiment. When parents would tour the facility and a consent form was given to them, the manner at which the school explained the virus sounds like nothing more than a stomach bug that may last for a week at best. Willowbrook made it sound like it was in the best interest of the parents and child if they gave their consent to participate because if they caught hepatitis from another child then the symptoms would be far worse than if they were given a milder dose from the school. There are many ways someone may look at this and ask their self was it justified as we will see. "Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness." This quote is a summary of what Utilitarianism defines. A utilitarian believes that...
