Ibáñez1, Raúl Martinez De Santos2, Nuno Leite3, Jaime Sampaio3 The aim of the present study was to identify basketball game performance indicators which best discriminate winners and losers in regular season and playoffs. The sample used was composed by 323 games of ACB Spanish Basketball League from the regular season (n=306) and from the playoffs (n=17). A previous cluster analysis allowed splitting the sample in balanced (equal or below 12 points), unbalanced (between 13 and 28 points) and very unbalanced games (above 28 points). A discriminant analysis was used to identify the performance indicators either in regular season and playoff games. In regular season games, the winning teams dominated in assists, defensive rebounds, successful 2 and 3-point field-goals. However, in playoff games the winning teams’ superiority was only in defensive rebounding. In practical applications, these results may help the coaches to accurately design training programs to reflect the importance of having different offensive set plays and also have specific conditioning programs to prepare for defensive rebounding. Despite general support for this logic, researchers have been puzzled by a substantive dilemma: Incentives often do not work. Benabou and Tirole (2003); Bouillon et al. (2006), and others have found that agents do not always respond positively as incentives increase. Other findings indicate that monetary incentives are sometimes demotivational (Ryan and Deci 2000), lead to dysfunctional activities by rewarding the wrong behavior (Baker 2002; Oyer 1998), are an inefficient control mechanism (Akerlof and Kranton 2005), promote shirking rather than compliance (Gibbons 1998), and are unpredictable under turbulent industry conditions (Prendergast 1999). Kutner, pp 160–162) The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature to better understand the conceptualization of satisfaction with end-of-life care and the effectiveness of palliative care interventions on this outcome. Data sources included Medline and the Database of Reviews of Effects. The review included relevant qualitative studies and intervention studies using satisfaction as an outcome from 1990 to 2005. Reviewing 24,423 citations yielded 21 relevant qualitative studies, four systematic reviews, and eight additional intervention studies. The qualitative literature described the domains of accessibility and coordination; competence, including symptom management; communication and education; emotional support and personalization of care; and support of patients’ decision-making. For collaboration and consultation interventions, eight of 13 studies showed a significant effect on satisfaction. A metaanalysis found that palliative care and hospice teams improved satisfaction, although most studies did not include satisfaction as an outcome. For other types of interventions, only two of six showed a significant effect. For heart failure coordination of care, only seven of 32 studies addressed this as an outcome; two of the three that compared satisfaction between groups showed a significant difference. The case should require 1 to 1 1/2 hours of outside preparation by students, and can be effectively discussed in a one-hour class. It is appropriate for managerial finance courses at the undergraduate level, and perhaps at the lower MBA level as a minor exercise. KHF Corporation is experiencing a threat to its creditworthiness due to difficulties in paying trade payables. Its colorful CEO, responsible for collections of receivables, is not providing for collections very well. He is much more of a good ole' boy marketing type. The firm is not performing very well, and faces large seasonal swings in business. The student is tasked with solving the dilemmas posed by the case. The model conceptualizes the impact of customer acceptance of a direct channel, the degree to which customers accept a direct channel as a substitute for shopping at a traditional store, on supply-chain design. The customer acceptance of a direct channel can be strong enough that an independent manufacturer would open a direct channel to compete with its own retailers. Here, direct marketing is used for strategic channel control purposes even though it is inefficient on its own and, surprisingly, it can profit the manufacturer even when no direct sales occur.
